This year, Hertz will begin deploying the 5th generation of its popular NeverLost GPS navigation system. Already available in select U.S. markets (for $12.99 per day, or complimentary in Hertz Prestige Collection cars), the Gen 5 NeverLost system brings real-time two-way connectivity, and advanced features such as online trip planning services, weather, and flight status data.
I had the chance to spend a week with a Gen5 NeverLost equipped car, and put the GPS system through its paces. How does the NeverLost Gen 5 stack up against previous NeverLost versions as well as stand-alone PNDs? Read on.
Fletch...As always you did a great job, in my next trip I will add "Hertz NeverLost" to my rental in lieu of taking mine with me... I still think they charge too much for GPS rental, someday all rentals will have GPS, better yet, hope that someday all cars will come with GPS as a standard option
Fletch, great review. As a long time Magellan user, I noticed that it has a lot of the features that the Magellan units have. Predictive spelling, several routing options as part of setting up a route, as opposed to having to go through the menus to tell it least use of freeway. I know that Magellan has had its problems but I still think that it is the best. As far as making a GPS standard in every car. I hope not. I prefer my stand alone PND. I can take it with me. I can take it into the house and I do not have to pay $2000 for it. I only have to know 1 interface. And I do not have to pay $200 to have the dealer update the maps.
Does it cost money to update the GPS Maps? I have a TOM TOM and Was thinking about getting a hertz.
One negative feature is the audio interference that occurs when the device "phones home"...I found it distracting. Perhaps there's a way to turn off the weather updates and other AT&T network-based features, but I never found it.
I also found it hard to turn off. I tried a quick press of the on/off button at left, then tried pressing and holding the button down...neither worked. It seems I have to turn the ignition off to get the NeverLost to turn off. NeverLost = NeverOff?
Why is it so expensive to rent in Europe?
Example: Nearly 110 GBP (UK!) for 10 days rental in Italy.
One can find a new GPS receiver at that price.
Hertz staff don't have the ability to turn the GPS off. Save some money and tell them you don't want it and don't pay for it. There were some things we couldn't figure out, so we ended up using my portable GPS anyway. I did like the "locate" feature to verify quickly what road we were on.
As usual, tons of stupid comments. People, why are you writing in comments - good site, great article, thanks author?
