Anyone who's installed a Garmin downloadable map update knows that one of the most annoying aspects of the update is dealing with the 2 GB update file. If you follow Garmin's instructions, and double-click the single 2 GB update executable, you're then forced to wait 10-20 minutes while your computer tries to open the file. For some inexcusable reason, no progress is shown while all this is happening in the background, and many users simply give up, falsely concluding that the update won't install on their computer.
There is a better way. Read on to see step-by-step instructions on how to extract the 2 GB update file and manually launch the updater.

I've found that the long wait to open the file can be eliminated with Windows Vista by disabling the User Account Control (UAC). After the map is installed, UAC can be enabled again. With UAC disabled, the installation starts without delay.
When you said a free version of winrar
it isnt really free
its a trial/demo
which is differnt from a free version
and would that update work with 7-zip
This method does not work either. With about 60GB free, I get an error message telling me that there is not enough free space and the installation will stop.
Everything seems to have gone well except when I check the data I have just on eproduct for my Garmin 205W. I show a checked box with:
CN North America NT 2010.20
[1] ALL
Should I have the first one you show in your example that ends with "3d"?
Thanks.
After downloading the 2GB file, it does not extract. Even let it sit overnight for 8 hours with no progress. I've tried WINZip, WinRAR, and 7ZIP - all those programs don't recognize it as a valid file to extract. I have nuvi 1200, WIN XP.
How do I get this file to extract?
Thanks!
Sounds like your download didn't complete fully. I suggest you re-download it.
Fletch, thanks for a quick reply. I've done that and have gotten the same result. :( I guess I'll try again.
Don and all,
I am having the same issue. I believe part of my problem is that when I try to launch the download manager the website it comes from errors out in both IE8 and Firefox. Anyone with the same issue?
Problem is, it's not a .zip file Garmin gives you. The latest update is only in an .exe file, and it just sits at 'extracting files' at 0% progress forever. I left it running over night, and not a difference in the morning.
I'm having the same issue when using WIN 7 32 bit. Does Garmin have a solution?
Awesome! Worked like a champ.
Much appreciated after multiple failure to launches.
(except I had to install a regional map onto my Nuvi 200 - Anyone know off hand what kind of SD card I need to get the whole USA?)
