When I first reviewed Globalstar's SPOT personal GPS tracker last year, I loved the device's ability to send distress calls or "I'm OK, don't worry" type messages without relying on cellular coverage. But performance was spotty at best, and service wasn't reliable enough for me to recommend the unit.
Available in emergency-orange or silver color this fall, the new SPOT device is 30% smaller than the original SPOT, and boasts a more powerful GPS antenna that won't require an unobstructed view of the sky to work (a major shortcoming on the original device). Also new are illuminated buttons, a dedicated pre-programmable Custom Message button, and a protective cover over the SOS button.
Pricing isn't set yet, though the original unit retailed for around $170. Odds are the new device will be in the same pricing ballpark.

if it doesnt require on cell towers
it uses gps and other satolites?
It uses Globalstar's Simplex network, which is not cellular. Just needs line-of-site to the sky.
wow the pricing is expensive
probably only good if you hike alot
Spot issued a recall notice today on the SpotMessenger 2 (NOT the original SpotMessenger. Info as follows:
SPOT 2 Messenger
"During recent testing, the company has discovered that some of the Spot 2 units may not reach our battery and messaging operating specifications,”said Spot spokesman Derek Moore. "That’s a big concern for us. People are having to use this in the field and rely on it for safety. So that’s something we definitely want to fix and replace." Moore said very few of the new Spot 2 units had actually reached consumers yet, but did not have specific numbers.
The company is providing free return shipping for all Spot 2 units, and will replace them as soon as the product is fixed, most likely in early 2010. Affected customers get a month of free service. Info is at findmespot.com/exchange
Has the Spot 2 Messenger been fixed yet? I understand the fix could come in early 2010
Now that Spot 2 is shipping, are you planning on doing a review of this unit? I'd be interested in seeing your comments regarding performance of this unit. Thanks.
