One of the more common issues I see posted in the forum comes from Garmin nuvi 200 owners who discover that their entry-level nuvi doesn't have enough internal storage to hold the updated, larger, 2009 or 2010 map. Here's what you can do about it, and how to get the entire maps loaded on your nuvi 200:

Thanks for the info, however while looking for SD memory cards, I have found they come in different "speeds". 2GB seems to be the cheapest variety, $1.48 for Kingston, and $2.00 for SanDisk. Would a low priced card be fast enough? Would read and/or write speed may be a factor?
Thanks,
Bob
Good info. I have attempted the above however there is no option on my update screen that allows me to choose location. I have a 4GB card in the Nuvi but still get the "not enough memory" message. When I open the application, no folder... (downloaded from Garmin)it starts "extracting", once extracted it asks me to agree to terms, then click next, once I do this it automatically goes to the "memory shortage" screen where I can't do anything! Can't go back or change location of install, nothing. The only option is to "exit" then start over from the whole "extracting" deal. Am I missing something?
I haven't gotten my 2GB SD yet from Amazon, so I am just guessing here. Maybe the 4GB is too big, and the Garmin doesn't recognize it? You know 4GB is actually 4,096,000,000 bytes, so it could be over the limit. Fletch did mention not to go over 4GB, maybe that's the reason? I'll let you know when I get my 2GB card and try it.
Same here - I don't see a way to install the map to the SD card.
Well, I got the 2GB SD card and installed it, and had no problem downloading all the maps to it. I have a Mac computer, and the card appears as a volume on my desktop. I did not name it, so it shows as "NO NAME". I already had the new maps downloaded, so I had to manually select every region to install, I enlarged the maps so I wouldn't miss any of the small areas. I tried to repeat the download process, but it wouldn't let me, some error occurred.
Now for the bad news. After all that, when we took the Garmin on a trip last weekend, the lookup address function would not work. The touch screen would not respond. Other buttons worked, until you tried to find an address, then the whole screen would lock up. Re-starting would fix it, until you pushed the find address button again. I removed the card (with the Garmin off), and normal function returned. I still had what maps I could fit in the Internal Memory, so I guess we're limited to that......
Any suggestions on how to make the SD card compatible?

theres a easier way just hook your garmin up to your pc with the included cord and remove the map file gmapprom.img from your garmin you can find it by navigating to your garmin on my computer. you can cut paste this to your desktop and wait till after you update before you permantely delete it. Once you removed the file from garmin to pc. Just update your garmin and it will have all the room it needs.... WELCOME
I have 2010 maps on nuvi with no sd card : /
I listened to the post above..................
What is the total internal memory of your Garmin? Mine is only 994.9MB, the 2010 maps take up over 1GB. I removed all the languages except English, that saved about 35MB. I installed what maps I could, but was not the entire US and Canada.
I have a 200w

I just re-read Fletch's post, where he said you don't have to install maps you already have installed. I have the entire map set on the SD card, and the partial maps set on the internal memory. Maybe there is a conflict because duplicate maps are installed? If I deleted all the maps from the internal, and used just the SD card maps, would that work?

Just to provide some more insight: there are at least two versions of the Nuvi 200 model that I'm aware of. An older version with just 1GB built-in flash memory while a newer revision has 1.5GB. I know, because I recently bought two used Nuvi 200, and their internal hardware are different even though they run the same software. I also noticed that the earlier version may have a slower processor as the audio directions are delayed and slightly off compared with the latter version.
With the 1.5GB version, here is what I did... I backed up and deleted all unused voice, text, vehicle, help and picture files to free up as much space as possible. I then backed up and deleted the original gmapprom.img, downloaded CNNANT2010.20 (1.18GB) using MapSource, and renamed gmapsupp.img to gmapprom.img. There was still available memory so I then also downloaded Southeast Asia V3.0 (114MB) which is named gmapsupp.img by default. There was still sufficient memory for Red Light Camera and Speed Traps POIs downloaded from Trapster.com. I then plugged in a spare HP 8GB SDHC card, and downloaded CNEUNT2010.10 (1.59GB) onto the card which was named gmapsupp.img by default. I also downloaded and saved other maps (2.46GB) onto the SD card not in the active Garmin folder. A total of 4.10GB of the 8G memory space is being used. Currently, this Nuvi 200 has the entire map sets for North America, Europe and Southeast Asia available for use. The Nuvi 200 will only recognize and utilize one gmapsupp.img file on the SD card so I just renamed the other saved map files to gmapsupp.img when needed.
As for the 1GB version, here's what I did... Don't bother backing up and deleting the extraneous files since it doesn't matter. I just backed up and deleted the original map image, gmapprom.img, and added all the available extraneous voice, text, audio, vehicle, and help files from Garmin along with some personal photo album for the Picture Viewer feature. I then downloaded Red Light Camera and Speed Traps POIs from Trapster.com. There was still sufficient native memory for loading the Southeast Asia V3.0 (114MB) maps. I then plugged in a Kingston 2GB SD card, and downloaded CNNANT2010.20 (1.18GB) onto the card using MapSource which generated gmapsupp.img by default. For CNEUNT2010.10 (1.59GB), I used another 2GB SD card. Similarly for the other maps, I use a different SD card for each different map set. Thus, I need to manually switch cards whenever I need to use maps in different regions.
HTH...
Hi Bob,
Thanks for your helpful info about using the memory space wisely. Do you know if theres any good maps of south america maps for garmin?
