Garmin nuvi firmware update version 3.60

Remember all those reports that Garmin nuvi 7x5's were mysteriously failing in mass numbers starting June 22nd? Well, it turns out that a botched firmware update is to blame. Worse, even if your nuvi 7x5 is still working fine, the update may have turned your beloved nuvi into a ticking time bomb just waiting to blow up and kill your GPS.

That's the bad news. The good news is Garmin has released a free software update that corrects the unusually nasty bug that can physically damage a nuvi 7x5, rendering the device unusable.

If your nuvi 7x5 still powers on, go grab this update immediately before your GPS dies on you. If your 7x5 won't even turn on any more, Garmin will replace your unit for free. They're replacing bricked units for free, but anyone who's had their unit for more than 60 days get a "NOH (newly overhauled)" unit. That's what the Garmin agent emailed me when I asked if they would be sending me a new unit, my repaired unit or a refurbished unit.

Just to let you know, I did not want a refurbished unit so I bought a regular small screwdriver (like for cameras) made by Stanley and designated as #0.

It was a perfect fit for the weird screws - it spans the gap and allows you to get screws out. then open case with non scratching opener.

Once inside you will find the battery has a modular plug in from the back of the unit. also be aware that the speaker connector is also a modular plug in.

I merely unplugged the battery for a minute reconnected and it came back on ... i then used the updater and all is well - can't tell it was ever opened.

I have one of the Totally Nuked 785T's.

Is it true that Garmin is handing out Refurbished Units without Advanced exchange at Owners cost to mail your unit to them with the whole process taking up to 2 weeks. If so that really sucks.

Even though I my unit is 4 months old, I have only used it a couple times and it is like new!!!!!!!!!!

For those of us who have fried units....Garmin should make good and send out prepaid shipping labels and include Life Time Maps for our inconvenience

Free Lifetime Maps.

Thousands of Units across the Globe Fail. This is not an isolated one of case. Garmin needs to make "good". I rely on my GPS everyday for work......and I trusted Garmin more than any other brand. And now i am going to be "lost" for up to 2 weeks.

Garmin is fully responsible for this failure...whether its because of their own update code or the chipset that they decided to no longer use Sirf( to save a few bucks)

The consumer is the loser here.

I have one of the Infected.......I mean affected units that is completely bricked.

Users have been reporting that Garmin has been instructing them to return their units at their own expense, and that it could take up to 2 weeks to receive replacement unit.

This is unacceptable.

Garmin should be issuing Prepaid Shipping Labels at the least. And for this TERRIBLE inconvenience should be offering Life Time Maps to anyone with a completely bricked unit.

I count on my GPS everyday for work..and I trusted Garmin more than any other GPS manufacturer.

As a long Time customers previously owning Nuvi 600, 660, 760, 780 units and Now the 785T, I feel completely let down with experience.

If you ask Garmin, they will email you a prepaid UPS label for the return.

Many people have opened up their Garmin (torx 5 screwdriver, although some have indicated it took a torx 4 or torx 6 ... obviously Garmin is using different screws) and unplugged the battery for 30 seconds, then reconnected. Seems this gets the unit to turn on, thus you can update the unit and not send it in. The problem with this is that it may void the warrantee (if Garmin can tell you have opened the case).

I've had my 755T for just over a month when it died. I bought it for a trip to europe which I'm leaving for in 3 weeks and now I'm being told by Garmin that because I'm in Canada I have to send it to a 3rd party repair depot at my expense with no guarantee that I will have it back in time for my trip.

I going to see if I can return it to where I bought it at BBUY and get something else.

Here's a customer service lesson for Garmim: my son had bought the Rock Band game and after 6 mos. of hard use, his drumset pooched. We called Electronic Arts and they sent us an entire kit (guitar,mike and drumset)at no charge via courier to Canada!!!

In these tough economic times, you would think that they would try and attract and retain customers rather than driving (pardon the pun) them away!!

The worst part about all this is if you update the infected unit to version 3.60, it may fix the GPS acquisition issue but it causes the unit to keep telling you the battery level is low and the image of the battery shows zero when it is fully charged.
I think Garmin need to look at the possibility of someone had planted a bomb / virus in their software. Could be competition and or disgruntle employee.
TomTom had some issues with virus being planted in their software in the past also.
It's to bad this is happening to Garmin, they make a solid product and they have a bunch of great people working for them.
It's not their fault and they are doing their best to fix these problem at a huge expense to Garmin.

I think the newly released version 3.60 firmware is only a patch and not a complete fix.

Update, regarding Canadian customers. I contacted Garmin regarding the $22 cost of shipping to send my 755 to the 3rd party repair depot in Quebec, here is their response:

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. Unfortunately there is not a way to refund any shipping costs in Canada."

So, after spending nearly $500 on this unit and using it for almost 45 days I now have to send $22 to have it repaired.

Guess they don't give a you now what about Canadian customers.

Nearly guaranteed you can bring your nuvi back to life by opening the back (needs a #5 Torx bit) and disconnecting the battery for about 30 seconds. Use a plastic knife or old credit card to pop the case off after removing the torx screws. Almost guaranteed to revive your "bricked" 7x5. Then immediately connect to computer/webupdater and apply application update 3.6. I'm NOT trying to suggest/recommend opening up your nuvi, just that a few hundred have done so and every one has booted up after reconnecting the battery.

WOW, and I as a Canadian was about to become a Garmin customer. It has some great features that were starting to win me over. Guess I will stick to Magellan as my GPS. I use mine everyday at work for 1,000's of Kilometers (miles) traveled each year. I am now on my 5th GPS, all Magellan. If Garmin hates Canadians so much I guess I better rethink.

Please don't screw me over now Magellan.

Mine bricked yesterday. It started actually before that, would not connect, then it started saying over and over that a gps update had completed. I disconnected it, I was going to take it inside to see if there was an update, but it never turned on again. I'm sort of irritated that I am going to get a refurbished unit back. I got this at Christmas and it is in pristine condition. I'm going to be displeased if I get some scratched up junker back. Not to mention all my personal data which is on the unit and cannot be erased.

I've been reviewing GPS models for days to find one that I thought I'd be comfortable with. This will be my first GPS purchase and I was looking for a brand and model that was easy to use and had quick response with good graphics. I was about to order the Nuvi 755T through Amazon when I saw this problem pop up in reviews. I don't really care about Blue-tooth or MP3 and this seems to be the major complaint in negative reviews.

If this is a problem resulting from a previous update would it affect a product that's purchased off the shelf today.

Any suggestions?

Likely would impact any 755T that is on a merchants shelf but not to worry. As soon as you get it download the Garmin Web Updater from the Garmin web site, download the firmware patch and you will be good to go. Its really very simple to do. My 755T never crashed even though I used it extensively during the period in question (so this doesn't affect all of them). So all-in-all I wouldn't let the recent events dissuade you from buying one - it is a good unit and works very well.

All the threads are true. You can carefully use a small Torx screwdriver or since I don't own one, I used a very tiny straight head jeweler's screwdriver to remove the two screws from the back. Very carefully separate the two halves of the case by sliding a credit card around the case, be very careful and go slowly, the hales are held togther with platstic 'clips' on the case itself. Locate the power cable to the battery. Reasseble. The unit is unbricked! You can then download the emergency patch directly or through Garmin updater. Garmin ought to be recommending this to their technically saavy users rather than get innundated with weeks worth of exchanges and irreparabable customer goodwill.

just got my bricked unit back from the Quebec repair depot. The comments on the repair order said they did a software upgrade. Powered on the unit and confirmed that the version they installed was 3.60. Service was really quick. I sent it in on June 24th and got it back today. Less than one week turnaround.

I e-mailed Garmin to check on the status of my 755t, which I shipped to the U.S. service center on June 23. Garmin responded, "We have found a way to fix these units instead of exchanging them so you will be receiving your same unit back. Your unit has already been fixed and is shipping back to you as we speak." So it looks like everyone will be getting back their original unit.

Garmin shipped it back to me on June 29 by UPS ground. I should have it tomorrow.
