Garmin Portable Friction Mount (New Design)

I've long been a fan of using a friction mount instead of the windshield mount that ships with most GPS units. Unlike a windshield mount, friction mounts can be quickly moved from car to car, and taken off the dash when the car is parked.

Garmin has released a new friction mount that boasts an updated design and improved functionality. The entire base of the mount is now pliable, and can be bent to match the contour of your vehicle's dashboard.

Garmin is still selling the original friction mount, but this new one looks even better. I've been testing it out for the past few weeks, and the results might surprise you.

Thanks for the review on the new Nuvi Mount. I have a question about the stickiness of the base. I think in some of the Amazon reviews there are complaints about the new base leaving a hard to remove silicon residue. Have you had this experience? I was think about getting one of these to use in rental cars, but leaving a mark on the dashboard would be a no-no.

I recently got one of these new mounts for use in rental cars when I travel but still use the old mount in my own car. Another advantage of the new mount is that you don't need to bring it out of your suitcase if you go through airport security. I think the old mount was filled with lead shot which isn't the kind of thing one wants the TSA to find in your suitcase during their security checks! I used to take the old mount out of my suitcase along with my liquids when I went through security. I've taken the new one (which just contains a thin metal plate) through security in my suitcase several times without any problems.

As to the backing I think if it were to be left parked on the dash on a hot sunny day with the windows rolled up the back may begin to stick to the dash. Personally I never leave my mount on the dash when the car is parked for security reasons so I dont think this will be an issue unless you let it bake in the sun in a parked car.
