TomTom's GO LIVE 740 is the company's first Internet-connected GPS. Leveraging an internal GPRS receiver, the GO 740 boasts LIVE services like TomTom Traffic, Weather, Local Search powered by Google, and Fuel Prices.
Built-in connectivity is nice, and the LIVE services are handy. But at $10 per month, most users will have a hard time justifying the ongoing subscription cost. Apart from the LIVE services, the GO 740 is essentially identical to previous TomTom GPS units. I've long complained that TomTom's basic interface needs an overhaul, and that's still true with the GO 740.

I can cancel a route by pressing the voice icon and saying 'cancel route' then 'yes' when it asks to confirm. The only voice command I am using right now.
Actually you cannot say "Cancel" to the unit. That is American english. You must say "Clear" route. Stupid I know, but they have so many redundant phrases in the unit but on "Cancel".
Do the top 3 companies have a monopoly on the UGLY graphics front? Seriously, I can NOT tolerate the map graphics on these "top rated" gpses. I don't care if Navigon left the US market like DHL, I'd still buy one over any of these any day just for the graphics.
And like I said in the Mercedes nav post, you should review the RNS-E from Audi, and the new 3G MMI when you get your hands on it. The systems from them blow all these pathetic 4.3" midgets out of the water. Another thing I can't tolerate, screens made for midgets. For cripes sake, it's 2009. Get with the hi-res 6.5"+ already.
Are you shittin me? It's a portable unit. Apparently, you're not in the market for a portable unit. Who the heck wants to carry around a 6.5" portable unit? You get what you pay for. If you want a built in Navi, sure, pay your $2000.
Portable yes but who carries their GPS except to put it in another car or your glove box?
Yes, this is true. I don't argue this. However, the previous poster was ranting about the fact that PNDs don't compare to OEM, intergrated GPS systems. I had an Acura with a Navi and loved the intergrated feel of it. However, I don't expect my PND to perform the same way. You just gotta be realistic and not compare apples to oranges.
You realize, these are the same companies who MAKE the OEM nav systems for cars. Same graphics accelerators(new models/Navigon/Audi MMI NVIDIA), same graphics, same map companies supplying info. Navigon/Navteq. So yes, they SHOULD perform comparably. Esp since they have been using ROM/RAM instead of DVD/CDs for years and have higher memory capacities. Now with the MMI and others going to HD or possibly SDD, who knows. A lot more detailed map graphics are possible for the OEM integrated units.
Keyword is "should". But your rant had nothing to do with performance. Your main gripes were about graphic fonts and so called "midget" sized screens. Being ticked about companies offering PNDs that are smaller than OEM units is like being pissed that those mini-laptops popping up everywhere now are so small compared to a typical laptop. The serve 2 different purposes.
And even if your gripe was about performance, just because the same company makes 2 styles of a certain product doesn't mean they'll perform the same. I had an Acura TSX with a Navi made by Alpine. Though it didn't have 3D capability, it had an excellent interface and worked extremely well. I also had the Alpine PND-K3 portable GPS. That unit was, by far, the worst GPS unit I've ever had. The menu structure was awesome, but it nowhere performed on the level of the OEM units. Routing performance sucked & map quality was horrible.
So tell me, how can Alpine make such awesome OEM Navis in Acuras, yet make such horrible PNDs like Blackbirds and PND-K3s?
Pass. Wouldn't be nuts about another monthly fee, and I don't use my GPS all the time either.
When Garmin introduced the SP 7200 and 7500 with the 7" display, it did not sell well due to the unit is clumsy and block the drivers view.
If you don't own a large SUV, truck or RV, a nice size screen is about 5".
As far as not carrying the GPS around is due to the lack of pedestrian mode that actually function as advertise.
You will find in the near future that when you have a PND with you, you will wish to bring it with you after you park your car since the last mile to your final destination could be routed using pedestrian mode. Someday it will find the section you are assigned to at a ball park or how to find a store in a mall.
With connective devices, you will someday find nearest parking with how many spaces is left, and reserve the spot using your connective devices.
Connective is the way to go and I think 5" screen size is probably as big as it should go for people that have poor vision.
I can tell you that there will be larger screen sizes coming available in the near future.
I use my GPS all the time, and find my portable unit is easier to use and all around better than most in-dash factory navi systems.
As far as the GO 740 LIVE, I find it hard to justify the monthly service fee given that most companies now offer free traffic, and I can perform Google searches from my cell phone for free. That just leaves fuel prices and weather, neither of which are worth $10 a month to me.
Where can I purchase GPS map upgrade CD for Mercedes E500 or where can I download it from? Dealers sell the CD for $300 a bit too much for the map that is not up to date.
I purchased Garmin 760 in January 2009, I upgraded the map in March of 2009 to Garmin latest map, however in my latest trip from Miami to Charleston West Virginia, I have noticed that many of the POI like Gas stations are not listed and some of the one that are listed don’t exist, I was looking for a BP gas in Logan, WV, the local told me that BP station in that location has been gone for over 3 years now, however latest Garmin map 2009 still shows that station, why do they upgrade the map each year without verifying the latest road or POI?
I really like the TOMTOM 740. With its Google search the POIS are really up to date and timely. There is a new restaurant that opened up 3 months ago and it’s in the POI. I also have a Garmin 660 which I really love and ordered the TOMTOM 740 to see if I would like it. After comparing the two GPS I'm going to keep the TOMTOM and give the Garmin to my Girlfriend. The mapping and directions are almost exactly same on the two units but the TOMTOM tends to take more local roads similar to what a local would take. I had the TOMTOM two weeks and I must say I'm pretty impressed so far.
I love the fact that I can customize almost every thing in the Go740 Live to my needs. The traffic info in this device is faster and more accurate than the Garmin 265WT which I also own, but it is not accurate enough to justify the $10/month fee "I dont care about all other live services offered from tomtom" compared to the free lifetime trafffic on the Garmin 265WT.
I was an avid Garmin user most recently with the 885t. I had numerous Garmins from the 350 to the most current. Over the past year and half, Garmin upgrades cause nothing but problems, and actually make some of the original features unusable. With that said I was beyond frustration with Garmin. I decided to try the TomTom Live Go740. I love it. Does much more than a Garmin could ever do, you can customize almost everything. Tomtom routing here in Ct is far superior to any Garmin I've owned. I just did a comparison with traffic during rush hour on the two units. TomTom's HD traffic is far more accurate and up to date. The Garmin traffic always seems to be hours behind. The Tomtom updates every two minutes and verbally advises when your traffic changes. This along withthe Google search feature makes the Live services worth it in my book, and since other brands started offering lifetime traffic, it's only a matter of time before TomTom does. After arguing for 6 months with Garmin that their software staff is ruining their units, and getting nowhere with them, I went over to TomTom and glad I did.
I too have a 740, among a few other devices. And I too like the 740 overall, but claiming it does so much more than any Garmin could ever do is a bit exaggerated. A 4 year old Garmin StreetPilot is much mor customizable than any current Tomtom, or nuvi for that matter.
When the 740 can give give you the latest news, warn you of a weather alert, tell you what's happening around town this week, when and how much, save a track log of your travels, allow you to adjust the map detail so all roads remain on the map when you start to zoom out at all, use 3rd party maps (many of them free), show traffic flow on all covered highways, especially when not navigating, optimize travel time on a multi-stop route, create a route to an off-road or unmapped location, save more than 48 favorites (and not overwrite them whenever you do a map update), all of which I have with my nearly 2 year old nuvi 760 and MSNDirect, then I might agree with you. And MSN is only $50 a year, or $129 for life, compared to the 740 at $120 a year. Throw in the short 30 minutes (approx) usable battery on the TomTom 740 and lack of a screen-lock and it does limit where you can use it. Don't get me wrong, the 740 is a fine device (tho the 340s is a better value and nearly as effective as a navigator), but certainly doesn't outshine the Garmin line. It's more a personal preference. Simple, uncluttered but not as "customizable", or give you lots of menus and things you can change (many of which are eye-candy), but more problems that go along with it. It's good to see you're happy with your 740, and in the end that's all that matters. I'm happy with both my garmin 760 and TomTom 740. There will be times when one will be a better fit for me for a particular trip or use and times when that same device just won't fit the bill. But I know for a fact that the nuvis have features that TT users wish they had, vice-versa with some Garmin users.
Magellan Maestro 4700 or The TomTom 740 Live ?
Magellan Maestro 4700 or TOMTOM 740 WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BETTER?
Actually you cannot say "Cancel" to the unit. That is American english. You must say "Clear" route. Stupid I know, but they have so many redundant phrases in the unit but on "Cancel".
Which menu in the "change preferences" provides the default "USA" or "Canada" for use when in the country of residence??
