Garmin released their 2010 map update yesterday. After an initial hiccup, the update is now working properly and you can safely go ahead and install it.
Here's a step-by-step guide on how to install the new maps onto your Garmin GPS.

i recived my 780 on 3/27/09, two weeks ago. i registered on 7/29 and downloaded the 09 maps.
why won't it let me download the new 2010 updated map???
more- garmin does not show that the download is avaible for the 780, it just shows the maps i can buy.
You would only see an update available if you are a nuMaps Lifetime subscriber, or if you hadn't yet installed the 2009 update. When you register a Garmin GPS, they guarantee that you'll get the most current maps at the time. When you downloaded your 2009 update, that was the most current version, and now you're not technically entitled to the 2010 update. You might want to try and call Garmin, though, and ask them if you could get an exception, since you bought the unit 2 weeks ago and if it had come with 2009 maps already installed, you'd now be entitled to the 2010 update for free. Garmin support is pretty good, so they just might come through for you.
I had a similar situation. Bought a Nuvi 780 from costco.com, first satellite acquisition 3/17, registered with garmin 4/6 (three days before 2010 maps were released), and began a download of the current available map update (2009). Didn't resume and finish the download until 4/26. Then I found out that 2010 had been released two weeks earlier. A long call to Garmin support (25 minute wait in the que) got me a 2010 map authorized to my account in less than five minutes after I got a person on the line. I did get my one free upgrade (2009), as is promised by the numaps guarantee, but they were more than happy to honor the spirit of their guarantee. Good people.
Fletch,
Have you heard from anyone or experienced problems getting the map update even after they claimed to fix it? I have tried Windows XP and Vista PCs using IE7, IE8, and FireFox. With IEx It finds the device and says the computer is ready but sits at processing. With FireFox, the site sits at locating device. I have the latest of all software from Garmin and I even tried downloading other items from their site and my device is being detected. At a loss here.
Thanks,
Jerry
Forget my previous. AFter Windows asked me about repairing the file system and fixing it, The site is allowing me to download the update.
Thanks anyway,
Jerry
Yes, connecting from one stage to another seems to be impossible
Received my 255W a couple of days ago, and updated the maps today. Though the process was time consuming (close to two hours for download (with Fios) and installation) everything worked perfectly.
I had my 255W map changed to the 2010 version free maps , but the map info still reads the 2009 version, but the download said we had sucessfully downloaded and installed the 2010 map update ????
suggestions ? Larry
Purchased The Garmin 255w two weeks ago. Free update this morning to Map version 2010.11 and software version 4.70 to 5.00 without a hitch. Good for another year!
Hi
Can you send me the link to download the latest update for my 255w
This is kind of off topic, but does Gamin offer firmware/software updates for the nuvi 760?
Yes - Garmin makes software and firmware updates available for most of their GPS units, including discontinued models (i.e. the nuvi 760)
I followed the instruction from garmin and they were just are you said. But once it said it was finished and I could disconnect the unit (nuvi 205) said "no detail maps found." Any thoughts on how to fix this?
You might check in tools, settings, map, and check map info. See if boxed is checked by map. and what version. If not there contact garmin. They will guide you through.
map info button is greyed out. I saw on their tech support FAQ site that I needed to create a text file with the new 25 didgit code and copy it over the old...gmapprom.unl and then it should work. But that didn't help either. I guess I will have to contact garmin tonight. Its kind of crappy that I did this on a Saturday morning and their CS is closed all weekend. I'm glad I wasn't going on a trip.
Know how you feel. I read of another person that had the same problem and Gramin was able to help him fix it over the phone. Must have been a glitch. Did you save the file (Garmin_RMU_CNNANT20100 EXE. and product key? You might try uploading it again to your nuvi 205.
I have re-installed about 6 times now. After a 30 minute hold I was told that it is trying to load Canadian maps and that my unlock code won't work with those maps. They wanted to send me to the Systems TS team, but I couldn't access my PC at the time. So I guess another 30 minute hold for me later.
Same problem for me too.. I re-installed it couple times and nothing happens. It is friday night and have no way to reach customer service. :(
We were initially told the same thing. They "fixed" it and we did yet another download and it STILL did not work. We called again, waited on hold AGAIN and were told the problem is that it will not hold the whole US. They had to do something on their end to download only certain US regions. So now it works, but we don't have the whole US. Like that is really "fixed".
THANKS FOR THAT. SPENT HOURS TRYING TO RESTORE "POST CODE SEARCH".PUTTING CHECK IN BOX SOLVED THE PROBLEM
I bought my nuvi 205, less than a month ago and nothing came up when i plugged the unit to my MAC :(
Question: If you sell your Garmin GPS can you sell the lifetime maps with it making it a better deal or is it only good to original purchaser?
It's tied to a single account and a single device, except for two very specific instances: if your device is stolen and you can give them a police report, or if your device is sent in for repair and Garmin makes the decision to substitute another one for your original pnd. Otherwise you can't transfer it.
With the prices of GPS continuing to drop isn't it better to spend a little more and get a new Garmin GPS then to spend $120 for the map updates especially if you sell your old unit on Ebay or wherever.
I bought a new Garmin GPS yesterday, and it worked fine until I went to Garmin.com and tried to load my free updated map. After two hours of downloading the maps, I was sending the maps to my device when an error message popped up. I unplugged my GPS, then turned it on only to find ALL my maps are GONE!I contacted Garmin tech support just to be told that they are having problems with the system, and I will not be able to get any maps until at least Friday.
I am upset to say the least.....
Same problem here. They told me on the phone it may be a couple of weeks. I emailed tech support and they told me to copy and paste the unlock code but that didn't do any good. Pretty frustrating after you try downloading several times at 3 hours a pop, or try to call for support and are put on hold for 30 mins. Anyone have any suggestions for a fix?
I have a fix - do what we are doing and take it back. After hours downloading and hours waiting for and working with Customer Service. I am done with Garmin.
Update;
Was finally able to upload southeastern maps, but my voices no long tell me street names...and the maps are not as good as the ones that came with my unit. Any way to get my GPS restored to original settings????
I am heartbroken!
The text-to-speech feature is not related to the map version. You must have somehow disabled the TTS feature. Did you change the voice to a non-tts voice, or perhaps adjust a system setting?
No, I just had the GPS plugged into my computer while attempting to update, and somehow, ALL the maps and features of my device got wiped out!
I have managed to reinstall the voice, but it no longer says the street name. It just says "drive to the highlighted road."
One day, and I have a messed up GPS..........
I received this email on Wednesday. I tried it, and so far, my GPS seems to be working ok.
Here is a copy of it:
Hello Theresa,
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this. The runtime error has been corrected. They notified us to have you re-download the map from your myGarmin account. When you download the new 2010 map update from your myGarmin account it will now have "B" in the filename. (PC - Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010B.exe) This file should correctly load the map to your unit. If you want to give it a try and let me know how it goes, that would be fine. Just reply back to my e-mail. To get to the new download, please log into your myGarmin account, then choose “Manage Maps and Map Downloads”, then “Map Downloads”.
If you need additional assistance, please reply to this email or you can call 800-800-1020 anytime from 8:00 to 7:00 Central, M-F.

I tried it again tonight another 3 hours and I still get the same message "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." This has gone on for a week. Does anyone know the answer. tonight was 4-18-9.
Do you have any information on what changed from 2009 to 2010? It seems I remember you posting this information in past updates.
Thanks!
So....just to confirm....
Once I download and install the 2010 map to my GPS, I can delete this gigantic Garmin presence from my laptop by going to add/remove files? And that won't mess anything up?
Did Add/Remove work for you? It did'nt for me. I get all sorts of questions but no removal. I have the old 2008 and the 2010 downloads on my pc - HUGE! Around 4gigs. Can't remove. Any advice? Michael r
You need atleast 3 to 4 GB of free hard disk space to store the program!!
Just bought a new 265WT. Registered it @ Garmin & was advised was entitled to map update. Went thru it all with not trouble other that large file, followed all steps like illustrated here.
When notified complete, MAP INFO now says:
CN North America NT 2010.10
[ ] ALL (is checked)
No mention of NA NT 1010.10 3D as in Fletch's example.
Did I miss something??
Regards,
Goldranger have the same information and same GPS. Downloaded map and shows only NT 2010-10. No mention of installing NA NT 1010.10 3D as in Fletch's example.
So did we get all Fletch says we should get, or not?
BW
No, 3D buildings is not a feature of the 2x5's
Updated my new nuvi 265wt with the 2010 map yesterday, and everything seemed fine. Like Zee, my question is whether I can delete the garmin files from my PC to free up space? Thanks.
Yes - once the update is successfully installed on the GPS, you don't need to keep it on your PC. You can delete the downloaded file, and uninstall the installer via the Add/Remove Programs control panel (for PC users).
Hi! Ebanij vrot! zt6bhmw1cb ptz4gyr6nc!
We are average folks here. Couldn't update. We use firefox and a well maintained middleaged computer. Asked Garmin for a refund. Garmin said no. I will not wait on a 30 minute queue on the phone. Not worth it. We are switching to Magellan and taking them to small claims court. Anyone interested in a class action.

I purchased nu maps lifetime for my nuvi 350. Activation of card went fine. When I tried to download the 2010 update, everything locked up. Garmin claims I have current maps, but unit says 2009. I cannot find Garmin_RMU_CNNANT20100 EXE anywhere on my computer. I do not believe it downloaded at all, as I was never asked where to download to. When I try to download again, the download manager will not launch and if I click to bypass the download manager, IE8 does not respond. I've even turned off my NORTON. Everything I've read claims I should be able to re-download and replace the update but it seems to just do the same.
If anyone has gone through this and has a solution, I would much appreciate it.
Thanks.
How do I know (check) if my new maps were downloaded into my Garmin device? I went through the whole installation process until they say finish. I turn my gps & I don't see a difference. I have Street Pilot c340.
Thanks.
Turn on your unit, go to settings, go to maps, click on info. It should list the version of maps running.
I think the map update price is way to high. I only paid $75 for my GPS.
After I paid for and downloaded the 2010 North America map update, I was informed that the whole map would not fit on my StreetPilot 330. I wasn't able to find a portion of the map that would cover all the areas we drive in. I suppose it would be okay if I could download a different portion of the map to my device any time we go on a long trip. Will I be able to download different portions from my computer at different times over the next year?
I have run into this problem in the past. You have to do one of two things.
Option 1
Purchase an SD card 4 gb or bigger would be my advice. When you download the maps put them on there instead.
If you are like me and do not like using the SD cards for the main map.
Option 2
Copy the map file to your hard drive and delete it off the garmin through windows (if you plug your garmin in it should come up as a mass storage device) I am not sure the tree for the 330 but for the Nuvi 260 it is under the folder Garmin and the file name is gmapprom.img PLEASE REMEMBER A COUPLE OF THINGS! Make sure you delete the correct file. Also once you delete the file run the update and do not unplug the device until the update tells you to. If you do not do this it will cause issues. This should solve the problem. I have had this problem on a C340 and my nuvi 260. If you call the tech support they will tell you do delete the extra voices, cars, and text files which are found in there respective folders. Whatever languages that you do not used should be deleted to give you room. I have done this and it did not work for me. I hope that this helps!
I use my nuvi650 a total of 8 times. I got the free update more than a year. Now is unit is not working is asking for update map.How can I by pass this. I not need a update for NYC and I use the unit 3 -4 time a year. There is no justification to pay $70 for update when is use 3-4 times a year.
If is no help in the matter that I will use google maps and I print my direction trash the unit.
I hope that help is available.
Thanks
Matyas
I have never been so frustrated as when downloading from Garmin. Email replies are prompt but do not contain all specific connections that one needs to know. Telephone waits after click 1,2,3, or whatever are annoying. Cost is plenty - how about getting paid for the time we waste!
I bought a Nuvi 1690 a few days ago and I tried to update the map on my mac. I followed the instructions, downloaded the new maps and launched the program. When it asks me to eject my GPS and let it finish updating it's software and then reconnect it and click continue. I followed all the on screen instructions and it still says the GPS has not yet completed it's upgrade and that I need to follow the on screen instructions that I just did. Any ideas?
I wish I had found this site before I tried the numaps for life garbage.
Garmin simply blames everyone else. Even after you do the things they say, it still doesn''t load.
They must feel we have endless time to spend on this.
The only thing to do, is punish the company. Get rid of their garbage -ebay or what ever, then trash them everywhere.
Companies like this, deserve to go under.
I am trying to get my money back. But found a good deal on Magellin roadmate 1212. Cheaper to buy new low end GPS, then waste time with Garmin support, not to mention all the hours wasted trying to get it to work. If they can't make a consumer product that is foolproof and easy, give up - close shop. No other excuses please.
Make it perfect, or go away - simple. Their program only does one basis thing really.
when my update starts it asked for a product key....i do not know what the product key is from the download.
how do i find the product key for my 2010 map update on my 765T?
Dave
Dave:
You can look it up by logging back into MyGarmin account. Click Manage Maps, then click on "details" under the Garmin unit listed.
i like garmin
I have nothing but good things to say about Garmin customer service. They helped very quickly and politely when I had problems with my free map update. When my unit's voice got laryngitis and couldn't speak, they quickly sent a new unit after I returned mine. Great operation!
Garmin Sux. Customer service is terrible. I just want to download maps and it is taking me several days to get everything worked out.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 260 and would like to use it in Australia. Can you please tell me how i could download maps and how much it would cost.
Thank you

I found this article via Google, and I am having the server connection issue 'an error occurredd while communicating with the Garmin server...' while updating my maps.
To find out that this article is from 2009, and this issue is still not fixed is shameful.
I have been a Garmin customer since the very first StreetPilots came out, about 8 years, and I can pretty much detail the Garmin software development policy:
Version 1.0, Release new product with fairly stable firmware for product launch.
Version 1.1, Release software upgrade with incremental bug fixes, minor enhancements, introduce massive software glitches.
Version 1.2 More minor feature enhancements. Ignore glitches as they are not part of release path.
Version 1.3 Withdrawn from distribution days later after uproar from forums and tech support over bricked units.
Version 1.3.1 Address major software glitches, introduce others. Remove popular features. Not compatible with Mac. Or Windows. Works on Commodore 64.
Version 1.4 You Garmin GPS unit is obsolete and is no longer supported...
Hey Garmin, if you want to stop your customers from abandoning your devices for GPS smartphones, and Google Maps maybe you should develop stable, reliable software, and ADDRESS ISSUES IN A TIMELY MANNER.
I have tried unsuccessfully to install garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_40 several times. I running windows 7 home premium. I have tried it in the compatibility mode for xps 2 and xps 3 in addition to several tries in windows 7. I have shut down norton and windows firewalls. I am connected to the net wireless with a go0d connection. I am trying this in mobile pc 20x. I have version 2010-10 on that came on the dvd and it works (with problems). I get the error message "An error occured while queing your garmin gps for information. Please insure its software is current and retry setup.
I have made sure that the software for the gps 20 (gps20x version 2.60) and mobile pc (version 5.00.70) are upto date and loaded.
I'm confused and was hoping someone could explain things to me. I got a nuvi 265T from Costco in Jan did the free update, no problem. Now there is a new update map and it's saying I have to buy it. I was under the impression that there was a lifetime free update of maps...am I wrong? Do I have to pay every time there is an update? I've only had the gps for less than 3 months and I already need to shell out more money? I hope not

Hey,
I just bought a Garmin Nüvi 265WT and I'm trying to update the European Maps (I'm in Portugal). Registered on the website... bla bla bla. Everything ok. Now I got to the step "comunicating with server" in that program that we have to install in our cpus. But it's there for ages! It's says in the FAQ that it can take "several hours", but i already waited 8 hours and nothing... I'm a bit worried. I don't know if i disconnect the device, close the program or wait 8 hours more... :s
Help me please!
Thanks!
Yes, you may stop the program as long as its only on Step 1 (1. Downloading - 2. Preparing Maps - 3. Installing Maps). This will not harm the device as it has not written anything to the GPS yet.
Once you're ready to restart the map update, I will provide you with information to assist you so it does not freeze again.
I would recommend using a wired connection instead, if possible, to run the map update. Wireless connections can be unstable at times and cause the download to have issues.
You may have a security program such as Norton, Trend, McAfee, etc. that could be blocking the download. I would recommend temporarily disabling your security program during the download. Please make sure to include firewalls in this step.
Also, please follow these steps to disable the power management settings on the USB ROOT HUBS on the computer.
Sometimes a setting that allows the computer to turn off the USB port if it thinks the port is not being used will be on when it actually is being used by you. It will not hurt to leave the settings turned off.
Here are the steps to do this:
1.Please right click on the MY COMPUTER icon on the desktop, or you can go to the START menu on the computer and right click on the MY COMPUTER listing there
2.Now left click on the option for PROPERTIES
3.When the system properties window opens, click on the tab that reads HARDWARE ***
4.Now click on the DEVICE MANAGER in that page
5.When the DEVICE MANAGER window opens up, scroll to the bottom of the list
6.Click on the (+) sign next to UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS
7.Now you will see one or more lines that read USB ROOT HUB
8.Right click on the first one, then left click on PROPERTIES
9.At the top of the USB ROOT HUB PROPERTIES window, you will see a tab that reads POWER MANAGEMENT, left click on it
10.Now you will see a little white window that may have a check mark in it (allow the computer to turn off this device to save power)
11.If there is a check mark, click on that box to remove the check mark, then click on OK to save the change and close the PROPERTIES window
12.Complete steps 8-11 for all the USB ROOT HUBS
13.Once that is complete, you can close out of all open windows
14.Now on the computer itself there may be some power settings that can be an issue, go to the main opening screen of the computer with all the icons on it for your different shortcuts
15.Right click any where in the window that is without an icon, then left click on PROPERTIES
16.Now at the top of the PROPERTIES window, click on the tab for SCREEN SAVERS
17.Now in that window click on the option in the middle of the page for POWER
18.Now make sure SYSTEM STANDBY is set to NEVER
***On Windows Vista/7, MY COMPUTER will read as COMPUTER, and skip step 3.
Sometimes there are other programs blocking part of the download. I would recommend disconnecting your GPS from the PC and restart your computer. Once the PC has restarted, please use the instructions below to clear your Temp folder. Once the Temp folder is clear, connect your GPS.
1.Go to Start and click on Run (Or type run in the search if using Vista or Win 7)
2.Type in %temp% and click ok, this will bring you to your temp files.
3.Go to edit and click on select all
4.Then go to file and click on delete
5.Once the files start being deleted, there may be some that will give you an option to select (YES, YES TO ALL, NO, NO TO ALL), select no you don't want to delete it
6.Some may simply say that the file can not be deleted that is ok because those are needed files, once you click on ok (in that pop up) the process will stop
7.Now press and hold down the (Ctrl) key on the keyboard and while you are holding it down click on the first file at the top of the list, then start deleting again
8.Once the temp folder is cleaned out, close the window and empty the recycle bin.
Also, when the map update stops on step 3, there may be corrupt data on your unit. To have the computer check and fix any problems, please follow the instructions below after you connect your GPS into the PC.
1.Double-click "My Computer" Windows XP and "Computer" on Windows Vista/7
2.Right-click the hard disk that you want to check, Garmin or Nuvi, etc.
3.Click "Properties"
4.Click "Tools"
5.Under Error-checking, click "Check Now"
6.A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed
7.Select the Automatically fix file system errors check box
8.Click "Start"
If the error checking found bad files, you will need to delete the folder that was created. However, the folder is hidden. To show this folder:
1.Go to Tools>Folder Options(This may be on the top left corner under "Organize" if you're on Windows Vista/7)
2.Click the View tab
3.Click to uncheck, “Hide Protected System files”, temporarily
4.There will be a folder on the GPS called "Found.000". Please delete this file, and then run the map update
Also try connecting the USB cable into the back of the computer and perhaps try another USB data cable.
I purchased a garmin, had similar problems, and returned it to the store 3 days later. After speaking with the store manager, he informed me I was just one of many who's done the same thing.
Garmin sucks! Buy something better. I went with a Magellan.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 205. I need a commumicator device. Did my Nuvi come with one. What does it look like? I don't see a picture on the website. Some of the addresses on my Nuvi are not correct. Will the new update correct them? Shirley
Just bought another gps yesterday and got on here to see if I could update my other 2 nuvi 660,s. After seeing all the problems will forget that and soon do as one fellow did go with a better brand. Will not be tom tom. Jerry
I am very mad and will be buying a new gps and it won,t be a Garim .Your updates for your maps suck. I spent over $1300. for you product & $80. for a up date disk.in 2008. I am done spending money on you junk. But you don,t give a Shit do you.

I purchased a Garmin nuvi 1340 in Europe with maps of Spain and France. I want to download North American maps. Someone give me a clue- how? how much?
I purchased a lifetime map update service for my Garmin Nuvi 660...I'm trying to download the latest update but for HOURS have been getting the following message: No devices were found. Connect your GPS to your computer with a USB cable to proceed:

I am using a Garmin-supplied USB cable - in fact, I have tried two different Garmin-supplied cables and still get the same message. Help????
Sounds like you're having a USB problem. When you connect your nuvi to the computer via USB, does it show up in "My Computer"? Also, before you can install the map update, you need to run Garmin's WebUpdater software to make sure the browser can "see" the device, and it will also install the current firmware on your 660.
i believe that if you don't get on line within (60 days?) of purchase, the website won't recognise your garmin.......... after reading all these com, ments mabey i'll leave this one alone although all the sandwich shops are non-existant on it.
I hve a 530 Garmin....purchased an update over the net...
I can't load it into the GPS because the massage ...tells me...my 530 has 112KB/total 991MB...and I need 166GB to load it...not enough room...
I've had a Garmin 370 for over two years and haven't had any problems loading Europe and North America maps on it. Plus I've downloaded tons of POIs with no worries. Their customer service has been excellent, too. Sometimes you just have to take a step back and go through things slowly.
I was unable to install the free map update on my Garmin Nuvi 265. I contacted Customer Service and it would appear there is an issue with the system recognizing dates. CS was extremely helpful and polite, and within minutes a most-recent map update was made available on my "mygarmin" page. The download went smooth and didn't take as long as I feared (less than 2 hours with my connection speed). I would say if you're having any issues, please contact CS as they were more than helpful to me. My unit works perfectly and has actually saved me time by recognizing traffic issues in real time and directed me to an alternative route before I even knew there was an issue. LOVE IT!
Whatever we say when using MAC garmin is totally rubbish
