Comments for Garmin's 2010 Map Update Causing Headaches For Some

An error occured while communicating with the Garmin server

Garmin has released 2010 North American and European maps, available as an electronic download or DVD purchase via Garmin's nuMaps Lifetime ($119 for North America, $139 for Europe) or nuMaps Onetime programs ($69 for North America, $129 for Europe).

I'm hearing reports that after downloading the almost 2GB map update file, some users are unable to complete the install, and are seeing the following error: "An error occurred while communicating with the Garmin server."

Yep. Getting the same result. Been trying for last 9-10 hours.

I'm now also seeing similar threads on other sites. Looks like no one has been able to install this map update.

At it for three hrs contacted Garmin With no help what know?
What good is a so called top of the line produce if you cant make it work? How does that work in our technical world???? (recalculate) I am not laughing!

On a PC running XP, I found that you can only install theupdte successfully if you have the following:
1. Windows Explorer as Default
2. Disabled Firewall
3. Wired-Internet

Thus, it will not work over WIFI or with normal security settings... obviously a bug or design error of this patch... hope they fix this for the following map updates

| Reply to This Comment

I was able to perform the update over WiFi, and with my firewall still enabled.

Many people are confused because their installer appears to "hang" for a long time. In fact, it's unpacking the huge (2+ GB) file in the background. If you leave it long enough, it will launch. Another option is to use WinZip or WinRar to extract the downloaded file, and then launch the setup program. This is a nice option because if it fails, you don't have to wait another 10 minutes for it to unpack again the next time you try to run it.

January 24th. I 'm on a wireless LAN and just finished downloading the latest map update for my Nuvi 265 WT with "almost" no problems, at all!
I run the ActivX control & "Download Manager" DOESN'T start!
I start a "manual DL.
Unexpectdly, "DL Manager starts about 1/2 way throgh the manual download.
It downloads & installs the update BEFORE the manual DL is even completed!
Success! But, a Windows "search" doesn't show any program named "Download Manager"!
Too bad, I'd have liked to have this readily at hand!
Oh well, I'll be going through the same "BS" in a few months again!

I had the same trouble for a couple of days.

Windows 7 64; Firefox default; Windows 7 firewall

Whenever I ran the extracter it was blocked by the firewall, so I allowed it, but I had to run the extracter again. The firewall blocked it again.

This time it worked and took about ten minutes.

I turned W7 firewall off and changed my default browser to IE8.
It would not allow me to install all the maps so I had to choose UK/Ireland. It did not spot I'd installed an SD card already.

This smacks more of back-bedroom programming than a professional application and shows Garmin in a poor light.

Now I can turn my firewall back on and change back to Firefox which is a much safer browser than IE.

I continue to experience problems with Garmin online map update. Spent 4-5 hours downloading the software, another 20 minutes extracting the the software for transfer to my Garmin and then attempt to transfer with error message "internet server not available." Performed task twice with no success and total frustration on my part spending hours with technical support resulting no success with download.

Better question: Has *anyone* been able to successfully install the update?

Not me. Finally on computer, 5 hours. Not on gps though.

My gosh! most of the comments I've read were written in January; it's now May and I cannot install the new maps either. I hope they fix this or refund my $85.

Here in Canada too. Can't update to the new map. 500 Server Error.

Figured it out. You need to turn off windows firewall.

Why Garmin hasn't addressed this is beyond me. You'd think for the ridiculous prices they charge, they'd have things a bit more user friendly.

I'm about to purchase the 2010 lifetime update. Has anyone found the error while using a Mac.

| Reply to This Comment

I was just preparing to pull the trigger and purchase the lifetime Nuvi maps; thankfully, I saw this post first. I'm waiting until Garmin resolves their obvious glitch--shouldn't have to disable your firewall at a legitimate site.

| Reply to This Comment

I downloaded the 2009.1 update under the nuMaps lifetime about a month ago with no necessity to disable any firewalls. I don't think that's the problem. Early this morning some users were able to successfully verify their install and load their map update. Since 8am or so, I've seen others again have a problem. Just wait it out a couple of days. What's the hurry? The last update was less than 80 days ago, so don't expect a lot of changes for your particular area.

I'm still unable to install even after disabling all of my Internet security programs.

I think the problem maybe downloading anything over 1 GB size have a 50% failure rate. This was the reason why Magellan did not offer download. To much issues with download speed, time out etc...

| Reply to This Comment

I don't think the download size is the issue here. The problem is occurring AFTER the download portion, when the program tries to connect to Garmin's server and validate.

There's a download helper application that can resume broken/interrupted downloads, and I had no problem downloading this or any previous map update.

I suspect Magellan just didn't have the infrastructure to support all those large file downloads, and didn't want to pay Akamai to host it for them. Maybe they'll re-think that now that they're part of MiTac - requiring DVD purchases is obsurd, especially given that Navigon, TomTom, and Garmin all offer downloadable map updates.

| Reply to This Comment

I have successfully downloaded the file--takes 4 hours, but no issues there. When I run the .exe file downloaded, I get a pop-ip: "Extracting Garmin Map Update" I see the % and blue bar increase. So far so good. I walk away, cos it takes a long time. I come back, and the pop-up has gone--no further messages, and NO UPDATE on my Nuvi 205, which is connected via USB. Tried 6 times. Same result. I suspect that it may be that I do not have enough free space on my C: drive. Looks like I need TWICE (or more!) of the download file--first for the download, then the same (or more) again, as it extracts, presumably to an even larger file. Am trying to free up more space. Might need 6+ Gig free!

Maybe I got lucky, but all I can say is tried about 8 times over the last couple of days and it never worked. Immediately following the last failure, I turned off my firewall and tried again and it worked. Coincidence? Perhaps, but not likely. Also, there are documented issues with this if you look on some of the public bulletin boards, so I am not the only one having this problem and having the same solution work. Some sites have it as being particular to Windows XP service pack 2.

Also, to be clear, downloading the Garmin_RMU_CNNANT2010.exe file was never a problem (besides being 2 gig and taking forever). It's when you run that program and it attempts to connect on the Garmin server that you get the error.

| Reply to This Comment

I tried it with my firewall disabled, and it still didn't work. Also, I've never had to disable my firewall for any previous Garmin map udpates, so I'm fairly certain this issue is on Garmin's side of the house.

| Reply to This Comment

can anyone help? as soon as the garmin download manager pops up after i save garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_20.exe, it says there's an error. i click "resume" and it tells me the same thing. i've tried soooo many times, and have contacted their support who gave me a bunch of instructions on changing settings and the ActiveX control, but I'd already done all that. i'm pulling out my hair!!

| Reply to This Comment

Hi Deed, I have exactly the same problem as yours, have you able to download the map now ? Have you found the soultion ?

| Reply to This Comment

I was continuously getting this error for the last 24 hours. Eventually, I disabled the firewall, and it worked in the first attempt. It has to be the firewall. Initially, I had added the setup file to be allowed across the firewall, but that did not help.

This is why I'm going to wait a few weeks before I buy the lifetime update

Then why am I still getting message "No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them." This is the 4th download. I am just about ready to take the Garmin back and exchange for Magellin.

| Reply to This Comment

Somewhere in the install there's a dropdown list to select your map. For the nuvi 205W you can only download (to the device) US 49 States + puerto Rico. If you've installed anything else, the device won't work. Many unhappy hours I spent downloading, redownloading, sitting on hold on the phone and their email doesn't work with Safari (!!!!) according to them. I finally got it to work, at the expense of my blodd pressure!

Seems like you are still having problems being this is 12-28-2010 and my 760 series garmin has been at Best Buy for two days now with the geeks trying to download new maps and are experiencing problems. I actually bought another Garmin as a gift yesterday for my brother but will be taking it back to buy a magellan.

Had the same problem this morning but was able to install this evening - apparently this was a glitch at Garmin's end (see their note in this posting thread).

It worked good, it took FOREVER to open the file on a Windows system though.

I started trying last night to download the file. The download manager starts and then I soon get this message "The server returned an error".

I have tried several times today with the same results. Turning off ZoneAlarm did not help.

Downloads are atrocious and totally unacceptable from a company of Garmin's reputation using their Download Manger (DM)! I just purchased a 265WT and wanted the latest software. Boy was I surprised when the download time was Overnight + all day long and still not completed. I downloaded it one time but I caused it to not load correctly, my fault. That download was very fast a little over an hour without their DM. I have a 6meg DSL service and get very near that speed from all my download except Garmin with DM. If I were the CEO, CIO, or CTO I would be crawling in a hole. This leaves all of their technology at question. If they can't set up a simple (yet large) down with worldwide mirroring that delivers better service to their customers what would make customers think their GPS technology will deliver. Do the C levels at Garmin know how bad this is for Garmin? I waited to buy a Garmin because I believed in them. Boy, am I questioning my decision.

| Reply to This Comment

That's not typical - my download took around 35 minutes or so over a cable connection. Sounds like maybe the problem is with your PC and/or internet connection?

| Reply to This Comment

I hate to tell you this, but the download speed is completely up to your internet connection and has nothing to do with Garmin. I've downloaded from FIOS and it took all of 5 minutes. Crap connection = crap download speed. Period.

| Reply to This Comment

Not true. I got 8Mbit line and the D/L gets up to max 40kbps. I am downloading 1hour now and I am 15% thru.
It IS Garmin fault.

| Reply to This Comment

My download took only 31 minutes using their Download Manager. That was over a WiFi connection using Verizon FIOS. Many others have had about the same experience, others sometimes up to 2 hours depending on connection. Have no explanation why yours took so long.

Just bought Garmin nuvi 205. Garmin offered me a free CN Europe NT 2010 Map update. Downloaded with no problems, but it refuses to update my maps. When trying updating maps, it says: The update was NOT successfully completed. An upgrade path was not found for your currently loaded map.
I am using Mac with it. Does anybody know what could be the problem?

| Reply to This Comment

I am getting the same error message "An upgrade path was not found for your currently loaded map." I sent an e-mail to Garmin's technical support and the reply said that I need to call and ask for software and that a file on the GPS needed to be changed.

I called tonight and waited on hold for almost an hour and asked for software. They said they could trasfer me but the cue for software was a 56 minute wait. I stayed on hold for a while and realized that it would be after there support hours by the time they got to me. I decided to try back another day.

Garmin fixed the problem and I was able to update the maps. I can't tell you how to fix the problem. Their technical support staff accessed my computer and edited a file, changing a code in it, on the GPS.

I would suggest starting the extraction (run the file you download) when you call technical support so you are at the map installation screen when you get a live person on the phone.

I got exactly the same error and sent an email. Hopefully they'll respond that way, who's got hours to spend on the phone in wait state???

I never received an error message.
My Computer is windows using Windows XP. When the Nuvi (885T) is connected to the computer...the Nuvi shows a picture of a computer and Nuvi connected. I used the Garmin Download manager which notified me that all three steps were verified and that City Navigator 2010 could be downloaded. The Download took about 2 hours and then displayed "finished". The next step was for me to start the program to load into the garmin Nuvi. This is where nothing happened and program would freeze.

Will try again later and report back.

This is exactly what happened to me on 5-28-09. I had no trouble with the first update earlier this year (the 2009 one). Both took about 1 1/2 hour to download, but when this one "finished" then I clicked "Install" nothing. and clicking the file did nothing and right cicking the file and saying run did nothing. It just froze on windows explorer and each time I had to end the Windows explorer task.

The same thing happened to me. Spent $119.00 for the Lifetime Maps download. It took 2 hours to download. After it said finish, I tried to run it..Nothing. The program is on my desktop..It just won't open and freezes my computer. I then have to ALT/CONTROL/DElete. The program will not open. Were you able to get your program to open??

| Reply to This Comment

You're probably not letting it finish uncompressing, and are canceling the process before it finishes. After you download the update and open it, it LOOKS like your computer is doing nothing. Just leave it and let it finish and eventually it will launch.

If you don't want to wait for it to unpack, you can also use winrar to uncompress the 2gb download and then launch the installer from the extracted folder (a handy tip if you're having trouble getting the update to work, as this method prevents you from having to wait 10 minutes each time you run the updater while it uncompresses the files).

| Reply to This Comment

Had the exact same problem but I took a suggestion from a previous person. He suggested using WinRar to extract the files first. I downloaded WinRar and extracted the files manually and then ran the setup file. It worked great.

Getting this problem w/nuvi 200W after buying the N. American update. First, map update app tells me there is not enough space on the device for the whole update. OK, how about the Lower 48? No, still not enough room. East? Well, for next week's road trip that will work. Do the install, takes an hour or so, all appears well. Disconnect and turn on the unit and am greeted with this error:

"No detailed maps found that support routing. The nuvi cannot be used without them."

Re-running the map updater produces the aforementioned "The update was NOT successfully completed. An upgrade path was not found for your currently loaded map" when the product key screen appears. Tried w/firewall off, same result. Downloaded the update again, same error.

Grrr.

Garmin support might be good but I can't sample it because they're too good to work on weekends, according to the website, which is woefully lacking in actual support info. The email contact form does not work because "You are using an unsupported browser". Really. Wait, you support Macs, take Mac users' money, then wave this crap at me?

The fact that I am leaving Monday morning for a 1600-mile road trip has no bearing on my frustration. Really. None. I mean, if you were about to do that, you'd want updated maps, right? My options now are: postpone departure waiting on hold Monday a.m. or buy a new not-a-Garmin GPS and fling this one out the window, hard. That's looking pretty rational right now.

using a Mac OS X 10.5.6 Intel.

Sounds like you deleted the basemap that WAS installed on your nuvi, replacing it with a northeast regional map instead of a routable NT basemap. Then, when you tried to run the update again, it couldn't find a previous version to update (since you've now deleted it).

I suspect you're going to need Garmin's help re-installing the maps.

| Reply to This Comment

Probably... will be calling them first thing Monday.

I didn't delete anything intentionally; in fact until a little while ago I didn't even know the map .img files were accessible through the filesystem. I was messing around with the Map Installer app after the initial fail and probably made it worse.

There are three .img files: gmapbmap gmapprom and gmapsupp. The gmapprom is huge, around 875MB. Is that the basemap? The others are much smaller.

Dunno if this will help, but:

The device "About" screen shows the following:
Software version 4.00
Unit ID xxxx
Audio version 2.20
GPS SW Version 3.00s

Under Map Info:
[X] CN North America NT 2010.10
[1] Boston MA

where X = checkmark

| Reply to This Comment

Dude, you're right, you did not delete anything. It writes over the old map when you do the new download. And, I can tell you, after over 5 hours spent on hold and talking with Garmin support you are right about the 200 and 205 not having room for the whole US. Which is ridiculous. The solution Garmin offered us is what you ended up with: we now just have part of the US. If we want the whole US, we have to buy an SD card. Whatever. We are buying another brand and returning the Garmin. (just got it a couple weeks ago, only used it once before we made the (in foresight not so wise) decision to update to 2010 maps.

| Reply to This Comment

is the 2010 store bought disk out yet and does that give same problem???

| Reply to This Comment

I suspect the problem (from Garmin's perspective) is that maps continue to grow in size, as more data is added. That means that 2011's map update will probably be even bigger than this year's one. The nuvi 205 is Garmin's least expensive nuvi, and as such, they reduce price wherever they can. At the time they sold it to you, it had enough internal memory to support the entire 2009 map set for the 48 States.

You can buy a 4GB Micro SD memory card on Amazon for $9.34. Having tried all the major GPS brands, I do feel you'd be best served simply paying the $10 and adding an SD memory card to your nuvi GPS. You won't find something better for the price.

That said, I do agree that Garmin should address this issue. It's a problem every year. Maybe they should just give existing nuvi owners a free Micro SD memory card when you buy a map update? Or release a version of the map update specific to these low-end models (i.e. reduce the POI database size so there's more room for maps). Something.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I apologize that you are getting the error message, Please follow the steps below and the correct mapping should be loaded into your GPS.
1. Extract the downloaded file Garmin_RMU_2010B.exe using 7zip(7zip.org) or WINRAR.
2. After extracting, the files should be available at the location where you extracted the files.
3. Go to the extracted file location. Click on the Windows folder.
4. Right click on the Setup.exe file and Click Create Shortcut
5. Right click on the Shortcut to Setup.exe file and Click Properties
6. In the target line add "-build_map_image 006-D0783-04" at the end of setup.exe". For example the end would look like xxx\Setup.exe" -build_map_image 006-D0783-04
7. Click Apply and OK.
8. Double click on the Shortcut to Setup.exe the map file will be built. Leave the Window open till completion of all steps.
10a. Windows XP: Click on Start>Run, then type in %Temp%. Another window will open.
10b. Windows Vista: Click on the Start Button, in the Start Search, type %temp%. Another window will open.
11. The file is placed in subfolder named 006-D0783-04.
12. Copy the gmapprom.img file from the folder to the Garmin folder on the Nuvi. Overwrite the existing file.
13. The Nuvi should now have the lower 49 installed.
If you have any trouble with this fix, or are not comfortable trying it please call into our 800 number and ask to speak to Software Support and one of our technicians will be happy to assist you.

I purchased the nuMaps Lifetime card from Amazon, went thru the very long download update process sucessfully until the end, after it had downloaded the large map data onto my computer, then I got the same error-failure reported on this blog. I solved this by closing all open Explorer windows - which were open and running when I was first trying to install it - repeated the install and it worked and was installed on my Nuvi 755t the next try.

DISAGREE - Perhaps most buyers use it as is, never try for the free map update. I have the problem with the 1300 using WIN XP SP2 - "communicating with server" for 9 hours over T-W cable.

There's really no issue. Consider that the thousands who have had no problem don't usually post. I wouldn't worry about the fewer than 10 complainers in this thread. Notice all but a couple posted within a day or two of the updates release, when there was an issue with the 2x0's and 205's, since corrected.

I bought this Nuvi because the reviews said it was so easy to use and the updates were easy. Yeah right. Five hours later and and I come to this site and BAM! I'm returning this baby! It's NOT just the ten on this site. How dare they sell this. I ditched the Digitech Mio I had because of lack of updates, well the Garmin might as well be the same if I can't update it.

I had and have the same problem installing the update for Western Europe on a Nuvi 760.
Mailed Garmin a couple of days ago, but no answer yet.
I got the error message when I tried to update anew and concluded that somehow the device was locked. Next I started the update program again while the device was not connected. Same error message. Conclusion: the program has logged somewhere in the computer that there was a problem. So I deleted the program and re-installed it from the image file that I had downloaded. Started the freshly installed update program, without a connected device, and it kindly gave me the following message:
Welcome to the Garmin Map Update.
This application wiil guide you through the installation of City Navigator Europe NT 2010 Update on your Garmin GPS. Please note, this installation may take up to two hours to complete.
To begin, please make sure that your GPS is connected to this computer and clicl Continue.

The above message confirms that the previously used program had logged somewhere that the update was not completed. Somewhere in it's own files, not in the device.

As the device appears to function normally I decided not to continue with a second update and aborted the update program.

I'm curious what Garmin will answer to my complaint.
Maybe there is a flaw in the update program and it might be possible that the next update will not have this problem. There is still hope. :-)

BTW, I use an Apple PowerMac G5.

I never did get this to work, and ended up buying a new nuvi 260W (grrr). I didn't want to buy another Garmin product after this experience, but I needed something fast on the day of starting a 4,000-mile round trip and didn't have time to mess around. I also initiated a chargeback via American Express to Garmin for the full amount of the update, but it will take some time to get that credited.

Sorry, Garmin, you blew it. I will never buy another of your products again and will actively discourage anyone I know from doing the same, until your horrible customer service is overhauled, publicly.

I had the same problem with both Vista and Win 7, Luckly my daughter's computer still had XP. I did update the firmware first, then updateed the map. My problem is that it tell me that it can only load one map due to the size. I put a 2gb SD card in, but it does not give me the option where to install, so I figured it would load to the GPS first than the SD card if required. How did you get all the maps on? and what size SD card did you use?

Garmin may say that they have the problem fixed for the nuvi 205, but I just tried updating mine today and I'm getting the locked message and the "no detailed maps" message. Yes, I realize that the 205 only supports the lower 48 and the update is all of North America. It may be something that I did wrong, but I followed it step by step and got no success. I'm going to try it again tomorrow and possibly use some steps that I previously found on getting the Canada portion removed. Any other suggestions with this issue would be great.

I am having a different set of problems: I can download the 2010 Europe map and it will run the extract after downloading. After that: nothing. It never starts the update program - and last time I gave it 6 hours! Have tried it on 2 different Xp's, and have tried downloading again, but nogo.
Extracted amually, but there is no exe-file, and I can't figure out what to do...

Anybody?

I`m having the exact same issue as user above.I`m trying to update to the new N/A maps.It won`t run after extracting files and now i`m stuck.

As Garmins support is worse than useless, I have tried everything - and finally, after downloading to 4 different computers, I found one that actually ran the program. All computers are XP - 2 desktops and 2 laptops....I have no idea why it worked on the last one and not on the others, sorry.

Garmin never gets back to me it seems- but perhaps they will read this? ;-)

Hi,

I purcached the 2010 europe update for my Nûvi 760 the other day. I am having the same problem that some of the others above,
1) can download the update to my XP pc (tried on two different px's)
2) when the downloaded file is launched, it is extracting for appr. 20 minutes.
3) the "extravting" window disappears (i didn't see it happen) and nothing happened afterward. I did not see any instructions what so ever.

| Reply to This Comment

Well, although Garmin made note that the problem was fixed, it obviously wasn't. Mine is a 265WT and I like it alot. But, trying to obtain the updated maps has tarnished my image of it a bit. Three and a half hour download and then a short extraction time led to the error message of not being able to connect to Garmin Server. I tried this half a dozen times so far, and the same thing happens each time. So, I'm not sure what to do now. I'm waiting for Garmin to answer and email and maybe I'll get lucky.

I have a Garmin 200w and bought the "lifetime" updates, which I now question.

First, I had the problem with my system SEEMING to lock up when I first ran the downloaded EXE file. Temporarily turning off my Norton Antivirus took care of that. (I think Norton was scanning the 1.9GB file before proceeding.)

BUT, I, too, cannot get the entire update on my 200W. I was offered a list of choices, including four which said "Lower 49 + PR NE" (or SE, NW, SW). I ASSUMED that meant the lower 48 (plus Hawaii?) and a portion of Puerto Rico, but a map of the US shows only a PORTION of the US being covered.

Anyone know what the message REALLY means? Why would they put Puerto Rico in an update that's too large for their units.

I just emailed them last night, late, so haven't gotten a reply yet. I'll let you all know if PR means something other than Puerto Rico.

| Reply to This Comment

And while the 250 has room, it only loads in the N A Northwest map. It doesn't even tell you, which will be great to discover when you get to Manhattan and can't find Broadway because its not on the NW map.

| Reply to This Comment

Well, the bottom line for my Garmin 200W is -- the map update is TOO LARGE for the unit.

Garmin should be sued for selling this. I mean, they check your Garmin prior to selling you the maps, so they should either be offering us JUST the lower 48 (not 49 plus Puerto Rico), or should tell us the we won't be able to put the entire US onto our systems.

I followed the extraction instructions above. The map file is 1 GB, and my Garmin 200W shows capacity of 991MB. Obviously, the maps won't fit.

I might try the memory card solution next, but I ran into another post elsewhere where the poster complained about how long it took to start his Garmin with the card.

This is really ridiculous. If I have to get another GPS, it won't be a Garmin.

| Reply to This Comment

Sued? For what? Offering you more information, more detail for your maps? Your unit was a base unit, that did not come with all of North America to begin with, clearly stated on the package. They are now giving you access to Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, all you have to do is get a cheapo SD. If you want to complain about compatibility and upgradeability, don't buy the cheapest unit on the shelf of ANY brand.

JD. You are being unfairly hostile to these people. (The rest of this message is mostly addressed to the Garmin management, as support personnel can do nothing without management approval.)It is Dec 2010. I just had to replace my lost NUVI 265WT with lifetime Maps. I got a 1390T. I have tried nearly 8 times to install the free updates. In those attempts I got every message that I saw in this entire line of posts. Currently by husband A teckno geek is in the process of attempting to resolve my issues. I even upgraded the firmware/ software successfully. I have copied the most promising posts for him to try if this current effort is unsuccessful. Even if someone did purchase the less expensive versions of the device, their Dashboard should have recongnized what issues they may have and only allowed them the correct choices appropiate to the device, it should advise them if they are using an unsupported browser, it should advise them if a memory card is needed and what size. A customer should not have to be a Techno Geek to get a GPS to update properly. Good programing from such a prestigious company should be a given! The download software should be able to tell if someone doesn't have enough memory and advise them of such an event! The same software should detect what protections are in place on a customers computer and at the very least, advise them of the proper steps to turn off the protections that are keeping the maps from downloading. I am a service tech for a major copier company, as a result I know about customer loyalty and how to get it, good customer support personnel, easy installation instructions, and very intuitive software and firmware! There is no excuse for taking more than a year to solve these issues. The online support leaves much to be desired. The Dashboard should be the only way to download and install the correct software for a device, all other pages should link back to that page. When a customer selects a download it should link to the Dashboard and let them know if it is not acceptable or appropiate to the device. It was when I went to this page that I even realized, I needed a Software/Firmware upgrade! Anyone new to this site or who only uses it once in awhile wouldn't realize any of this except by trial and error. HTML links are a great tool! These days intuitive Install Wizards are essential. Di

Spent between 2 and 3 hours downloading and I'm getting error messages. The problem is not fixed. I'm going to try and get my money back and just live with the older map. I will not buy a Garmin again. The support is very poor. I have a c330.

There have been numerous complaints about people purchasing life time map software from Garmin, Amazon.com, Walmart or Garmin authorized dealers/resellers that is having issues activating it on Garmin web site.

Garmin have to admit to this issue publicly, but have stated unofficially they have a problem and are now trying to address it.

It appears that there is two links to either activate a code for a life time map or if you buy the life time update from Walmart, you will be issued a gift card that will requires your merchant to activate the card before you can activate your map update with the code the merchant issue.

It appears that these links are having issues and it is asking customers that purchased the REAL life time map update from authorized resellers are being sent to the gift card activation page on Garmin web site, this confuses the customers to think the merchants have to activate the card when it is not necessary.

I read a lot of this type of complaints on numerous site including Amazon.com reviews

I sure hope this issue of activating life time map update card is resolved soon by Garmin.

Anyone else having experience this type of activation problems?

| Reply to This Comment

I bought the lifetime updates - and they are lifetime as in it takes one to get them installed.

The executable is 2.2GB and takes 25 minutes to load, another 15 minutes to extract and then after all that it fails to complete telling you to contact support.

The code looks like it is done in Russia and its steps very poorly implemented.

Garmin is clearly having serious technical leadership issues.

This has been a problem for over a year by my experience.

I only wish I had found this list of complaints sooner. I have spent way too many hours trying to install the 2010 map update on my parents nuvi 200. First, we could not get the download to complete, and when after 4 unexplainably slow failures, it finally did - only to find that the map is too large for the unit. There is absolutely NO excuse for Garmin not to inform the buyer that the map is too large for certain models PRIOR to purchase. Even after they checked the model and started the abysmally slow download, there was no notice about the size issue. I suppose they are hoping this will drive you to purchase a larger unit? I am going to try to get my parents money refunded and encourage them to go purchase a different brand of GPS.

I just installed the 2010 map update on my Nuvi 200w. Like all of you, I had problems with MS Internet Explorer hanging. I tried Firefox and was able to download the file to a folder on my computer. I experienced, like many of you, the system appearing to lock when I double-clicked the executable under Vista Business. However I noted the hard drive was running, and running, to decompress the file and begin the installer. After about 10 minutes you finally see some result from double-clicking. Ridiculous!

I am very disappointed that the 200w does not have enough room for the entire U.S. map on my base unit. I am even more disappointed that the crackerjack Russian programmer could not put a "back" button on the installer program for us, so that we did not have to re-initiate the program from Square one. (Thanks for the tip about uncompressing the file, Fletch!)

Fortunately I have a 4GB SD card handy and plugged that in. Then under Programs/Garmin, I ran the MapSource program and was able to install ALL of the update on my unit, selecting my SD card as a mass storage device. Upon testing it seems to work. Now only if the 200w was better about acquiring satellites when I plug in a route!

Anyone know if that lifetime update is for the unit only, or can be transferred to another Garmin? I could "buy" one with hotel points.

What a nightmare this has been. Days and days spent trying 9-10 times to get my maps updated on my gps. I'm on a Mac and can't get the downloadable 2010 maps to update to my Nuvi350. I've emailed three times (only one email has ever been answered)and been in Garmin's Support hell twice. Expect to be on hold for 30 minutes, then when you say "mac", they'll transfer you to the mac tech and yep, you're on hold again.... They can access your computer through "remote assist". They check your system, space, use your disk utility to see that, yes, your Garmin and your computer appear fine and there's no problem with either. Then you're disconnected to try the update again and it doesn't go through- again. I've asked to have a disc sent, no reply. I've ask for a refund, was told to "call" so tech support can walk me through it again... what???? My Garmin Nuvi 350 now says "NO MAP DATA". So I basically paid Garmin to erase my gps. I'll be calling my credit card company for a reverse on charges for something they didn't deliver. When people bring up the subject of gps purchases... I'll pull out the blank Garmin and show them what they'll get in terms of customer service and standing behind their own products!

| Reply to This Comment

I had the same problem, but different experience. On second call to Garmin, we discovered it was a bad memory card. I know it's a pain, but they did give me a RMA number to send my unit in and they'll be fixing it. They also are sending out dvd's of the maps, just ask on the phone (email response is slow). That was the first thing I asked for (they said yes, got my address and told me it would be about two weeks before they could restock and send it) then they talked me into trying with them on remote one more time and found it was the gps itself.

They are standing behind their products. Long wait times on the phone, I think, are because they are having to spend so much time in remote with each caller.

Bob,

The Nuvi 350s have issues being seen by newer software if you have never updated the firmware on it. You will need to contact them to get a newer firmware file. Its always good practice to use the WebUpdater on it every few months.

| Reply to This Comment

This is ridiculous. I solved it by extracting the .exe file in 7-zip or winzip and running the setup file in the windows folder.

I was able to load the 2010 map update on my wife's Nuvi 250 with no problem other than the long download. Unfortunately my Nuvi 650 still will not update after 6 tries. I did the 2009 update to my 650 with no problems. I will extract the install files and try again. Then I'll try disabling the firewall. What a pain.

| Reply to This Comment

I successfully updated my NUVI 360 but waited 6 hrs for the download to my p.c. where it hung on the " processing page" all this time. I checked the box to automatically launch the download but it never executed. I finally closed this page, went back to my account, map update and there it was waiting for me. Wish I didn't waste so much time but it worked.

For those who are having problems installing the 2010 NT North America Map Update from the DVD on the Garmin StreetPilot c330, here is what worked for me, and some instructions from Garmin customer support. You will need an SD memory card for you c330. The largest card supported by the unit is 2GB. This turns out to be large enough for the full 2010 map update, and I recommend getting a card of this size.

As several have noted, the full map update is too large to install in the internal memory of the c300. Use the DVD for installation, and after a couple of steps you will get to a drop-down menu showing the names of various regions you can install. These are all subsets of the full North America map, and are all small enough to fit on the internal memory. Although it's not necessarily obvious, when you pull down the names in the drop-down menu, you can then click on each name to see the regions covered. The names, unfortunately, are not descriptive enough, so you should definitely click on each to see the map for each region. Once you have selected a region to install, just work through the steps on the disk and the region you have chosen will be installed on the internal memory of the c330. As part of this process, it will erase your previously installed version (e.g., 2009 map update).

According to Garmin, the disk will also install on you computer some programs including MapInstall and MapSource. In Windows XP, the programs should end up in a Garmin folder in All Programs. You will need MapInstall for the next steps. (Note -- I used the same PC to install a downloaded version of the 2010 Map Update before using the DVD to install the update on the c330, so I already had the MapInstall program on my PC. I have no reason to doubt that the DVD will put MapInstall on the PC as Garmin says, but I could not verify this myself).

The next step is to use MapInstall to install the maps onto your SD card in the c330. Here are two important tips. First, although it was not obvious to me, it turns out that MapInstall will only install maps onto the SD card, not to the internal memory. I learned this from a Garmin phone support person, as it was not obvious to me from the program and/or documentation. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get the maps onto the SD card, but you don't need to worry about that since that's the only place MapInstall will send them. Second, with a 2GB SD card, you can intall the full 2010 update onto the SD card. So, even though you need to select a subset of the maps for installation on the internal memory, there's no need to worry about which subset you put in internal memory and which you'll put on the card, because you will actually install the full set of maps in the 2010 update to your memory card if you have a 2GB SD card.

Here are the instructions from a Garmin Tech Support person for installing onto the SD card:
1. Place the SD card into the SD card slot in your device
2. Connect your device to your computer
3. Turn your device on
4. Double-click on the MapInstall icon on your desktop or in the Garmin folder in All Programs
5. Click Next to select the device you want to load the maps to (Note you just select your device, no need to try and tell it to load onto the SD card)
6. Click on the region(s) you would like to load to your device (Note - if you have a 2GB card, select all regions, they'll all fit)
7. Click Next
8. Click on Finish to build the map set that will be sent to your device
After the transfer completes, you will be ready to use your device. Please note: The SD card must remain in your device in order to view the additional mapping you have loaded to it.

I also have a c330. The download to the computer was completed after what seemed to be in eternity. Used Mapinstal to put maps on SD card. Placed SD card in c330 and it takes for ever to load the maps. I am in Florida. So I only loaded the updates for Florida hoping the unit would access the maps on the SD card in a short period of time. I went to Daytona Beach, Fl a 3 hour drive and the maps still had not loaded. Pulled out the SD card and used the pre-programed maps in the unit.

Any suggestions?

I have not been able to update Garmin 2010 maps either. But the worst part is that my Garmin Nuvi260W does not work at all since a tried the update. I haven't seen anyone saying that the update caused there garmin to fail.
The download took almost 7 hours. The update took about an hour to extract and update. But when the update got to about 75% complete i got an update failed message. After that my Nuvi 260W never worked. I get a message saying that no routing maps were found or somthing to that effect. So far Garmin has not been able to fix problem.

After I paid for and downloaded the 2010 North America map update, I was informed that the whole map would not fit on my StreetPilot 330. I wasn't able to find a portion of the map that would cover all the areas we drive in. I suppose it would be okay if I could download a different portion of the map to my device any time we go on a long trip. Will I be able to download different portions from my computer at different times over the next year?

As all of you above, I have also purchased NuMaps updates for life. I am using Windows XP Pro x64 and have gotten to the download file, but was unable to actually download it physically to any spot on my comp. I tried WinRAR with no success. As the download starts, it pauses, then error message appears, error on page. I have spent all of today trying to install but with absolutely...NO SUCCESS!!!! I have always owned Garmin Products and have never had an issue like this before. Attempts were made on 3 different computers. : (

After downloading the 2GB file, it does not extract. Even let it sit overnight for 8 hours with no progress. I've tried WINZip, WinRAR, and 7ZIP - all those programs don't recognize it as a valid file to extract. I have nuvi 1200, WIN XP.

How do I get this file to extract?

Thanks!

Check if Akamai Download Manager is compatible with your browser. Search for Akamai system requirements. Note: the following browsers are not compatible with the Akamai DLM:

* Windows Safari 3,0
* Google Chrome (currently in Beta)
* Internet Explorer for Mac OS
* Mozilla Firefox 3.1 Beta

I don't know if this will help. When I downloaded to firefox files wouldn't extract. I had to use Internet Explorer which recognized Akamai Download Manager. Firefox didn't.Hope this helps.

I thought I was having the same problem. When I finished downloading and clicked the Launch buttom, nothing (or so I thought). So I tried to exit unsuccessfully (I am not very patient - just ask my wife or kids) so did a Control-Alt-Delete and ended program. I then tried to run as administrator from the saved location - the Vista running/doing something circle indicator was turning indicating it was doing something and I waited like 5 minutes with no indication from the program that it was trying to open and unzip or whatever. I then went into the other room to help the wife take ornaments and lights off the tree (don't you just hate doing that), got a cup of coffee, talked with my daughter and pretty much forgot about the garmin map file. Came back in approx 40 minutes later and voila! file was open and ready to begin. I followed the instructions like a good soldier and some 45 minutes later (it took a LONG time to actually load onto the GPS device - but at least at this point there was a typical progress bar letting me know that something was happening) my 255W had updated maps. So I guess I'm saying be patient, go return some presents or something after you right click and say run, and good luck!

1) Set Internet Explorer as the default browser.
1) In Internet Explorer Security Options uncheck:
-Check for publisher's certificate revocation
-Check for server certificate revocation

2010.30 is a horrible update (2010.20 worked just fine for me). Downloaded twice, once using Firefox, second time using the Garmin Downloader. Successful both times. When you execute the file, it just sits at 0%. Tried on an XP and Vista machine, after 1 hour, still at 0%. I've got 8GB free on drive C and 48 GB free on other drives. Have a quad core PC with 4GB RAM. It shouldn't take this long and still not install.

hello-I have a nuvi 660 and had all of the same problems with no luck. today, I got it to work! here's what I did.
have win 7--turned off firewall, and downloaded the map file, to my desktop--took 3 min. then turned firewall back on.
then downloaded 7zip file for 64 bit OS.
opened the garmin exe file, under 7zip, and that took about 8 min to extract the file to my desktop.
plugged in the nuvi, double clicked on the setup exe file, and away it went--took one and a half hours to update the map.
I did not install it on the computer, I just chose upgrade the map. when done, I unplugged, and I have the 2010 North america map, and all seems well. hope this helps someone else, but it was a major PIA, and the garmin support line was very helpful

The first download, after paying for "lifetime updates", produced an 8-byte, intact, "bin" file, when I downloaded with Internet Download Manager. WOW!! All of North America compressed into EIGHT-bytes (That's about $2 per BIT, figuring $120 for 64-BITS). Terrific compression algorithm!)

No response from Garmin tech-support on the difficulties with the 8-byte North American maps update.

Went to a different machine and managed to coax a 2.06 GIGA-byte file,

garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_40.exe

out of the pipe, using their builtin "Akamai" file download manager (which only runs 4 connections, compared to IDM's 8, and is more fragile with regard to paused/resumed/dropped downloads).

Installing the "garmin....exe" file resulted in decompression (without any error messages) followed by attempting to connect to a Garmin server. (Internet connection to other sites was verified as working with Firefox & Opera browsers.)

The Windows-Seven, X64 bit machine produced the error message:
"An error occurred while communicating with the Garmin server....."

Taking the 2.1 GB file to a different machine, booting into 32-bit Windows-XP, and the same installation process produced the same stopping point:

"An error occurred while communicating with the Garmin server".

Third try, booting into Linux, was running the "garmin_rmu_cnnant2010_40.exe" under "Crossover Linux" producing an immediate error at the very beginning of the decompression.

FOURTH try, was booting into Linux, running "garmin...exe" under "WINE" with no success.

It appears that they allow you to connect to their server in order to sell the update and take your money, require you to connect to their server in order to use what they sold you, then refuse to allow the connection for completing the update.

IS THE UPDATE SO SPECIFIC THAT THEIR SERVERS ONLY CONNECT TO MAC'S??
DOES THE UPDATE REQUIRE A DIRECT CAT-5 802.11 WIRE TO THEIR SERVER??

Fortunately it was a credit card purchase since it appears that the product that Garmin sold was "neither merchantable nor fit for the purpose for which it was intended...." so there is the credit card refund/chargeback if Garmin cannot deliver a working product or a refund, themselves.

AAA TripTicks are free!! What a headache $120 can buy!!

Ok....most of you are having this error are probably running Internet Explorer...

Make sure to follow these steps and it should work for you.

1. Make sure your firewall settings are turned off.
2. Open Internet Explorer.
3. Click on "Tools"
4. Click on "Internet Options"
5. Click on the "Advanced" Tab
6. Scroll down to the "Security" section
7. UN-check the following:
Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for server's certificate revocation
8. Close Internet Explorer
9. Run update again and it should work.
10. Once update is going then open Internet Explorer, follow the steps again and CHECK the two items that we unchecked.

These steps were done by a Garmin Rep on my XP computer running IE 8 and it worked. Thought I would pass these steps along. Please advise if they work for you.

You may not want to bother with the update -- I bought it, downloaded it successfully, and now wish I hadn't. The map updates were a downgrade -- stores that have been around for 4-5 years, and were in the 2009 maps are inexplicably gone from 2010. This is not just one or two, but whole swaths of items are seriously out of date, and were correct in the 2009 version. Garmin wouldn't help me back the crap out.

| Reply to This Comment

You are correct about the "new" update not reflecting current info. Addresses that I typed into the Garmin pre-update appear as "no matches found" after I updated. How can the "update" be more out of date than the older version??? I now wish I had not updated. It would be nice to be able to roll back this update to the earlier version.

My boss had me download the 2010.40 update to my hard drive for him - he is tech challenged to say the least. The process was a total pain but finally got it done. I did get the update installed onto his unit - can't remember the model. But now I want to delete the 2 gig file from my hard drive and can't. Every time I try I get a message "Cannot delete Dc40: It is being used by another person or program. Close any program that may be using the file and try again." Has anybody else had the same problem and if so how did they resolve it?

I just bought the Lifetime North America package for my Nuvi 660. I spent two hours watching it download to my G-4 Mac. I then launched the Garmin Map Updater and it doesn't show my nuvi (or anything) in the device pulldown list. So I can't continue. I can see my Nuvi's hard drive sitting on my desktop. Why doesn't this software recognize it. Any ideas out there? Thanks. -CT

I just attempted to update my Nuvi 200. Garmin disclosed that I *may not* get a complete update but I had to complete the credit card transaction in order to find out what exactly the update would be. Of course, the update I wanted was not there. I exited the download process and disputed the transaction with American Express. Garmin should FULLY disclose what exactly is updated or not updated BEFORE the credit card is taken because they know exactly what device you have as you are connected! Garmin is working the slippery slope transaction. As a Garmin client I find it extremely deceptive and aggravating that they would not fully disclose what they update. Not only did it take almost 2 hours to go through the update process but I had to deal with AmEx. Remember that you must wait til the charge posts to your account which is 24-48 hours after the transaction. My advice is do not fall victim to Garmin's sneaky and deceptive sales tactics.

I have a sneaky feeling that this update deception is purposeful and the intent is to get the client to buy a completely new machine because the older machine does not have enough memory is Garmin's argument (after they have your $69 dollars). I find this totally UNBELIEVABLE. Garmins should know that they cannot sustain a business model build on deception. They are technology group. They should at least have a web site that function easily and quickly. They should at least have a web site that FULLY and easily shows FAQs frequently asked questions about what regions are updated and what regions are not.

I think the Garmin VP of Sales is an old car sales "guy" because this update deception is slick.

I suggestion to Garmin that if in FACT the memory is not enough (they know the model number because you have to enter all that before you proceed) for an update then GARMIN, to retain their clients would offer an exchange towards the purchase of a new machine that has enough memory. Now if the memory on my typical mini Dell Netbook computer can have 160gb - hello! - then the Garmin can have enough for an update. Are they mapping potholes in Boston!

Garmin CEO and Board of Directors, you are sneaky. Stop being overly deceptive. You do have competitors.

I successfully downloaded and installed lifetime update to my 360 but would like to clear the file off my computer now that it is on the Nuvi. Each time I try to delete, it freezes my desktop. Any advice?

I just received a Nuvi 1490T that was bundled with the lifetime map updates, so of course, I decided to update the maps before taking it out on the open road.

The download wasn't an issue, a 12MB internet connection kinda helps. The issue was the downloaded application to contact Garmin's servers.

I have a Windows 7 X64, Intel Q6600 (O.C. to 3.6GHz) custom build, with Comodo Internet Security.

I had to run the application several times (I think the count came up to 5). I ran Comodo's firewall security level to "Custom Policy Mode", and allowed the application as "Trusted Application", so it would allow all connections in and out.

Eventually, the connection went through. My computer's building the maps as I type this. Just keep trying and cross your fingers.

Mike M.,
Try to disable your antivirus (typically that scans everything that is running, so it can slow down the system).
If that doesn't work, restart the system, and after the BIOS splash screen, press F8 repeatedly until the boot-up menu is displayed, and select Safe Mode. Navigate through Windows Explorer to find the file that you're wanting to delete, and attempt to delete it.

I downloaded this update and it completely froze my Windows Explorer. I've tried to uninstall it and use System Restore all to no avail. I cannot use my computer!!!

Bought Nuvi 360. Tried to do map update, won't work. Says it is downloading 1181.1 mb file, but never completes, it just hangs after 16 hours! Tried several times, nothing. Using a new MacBook Pro. The maps on this 360 are too outdated, several places are not there anymore, and new ones are not on the device. There has to be a way to simply download the map update and then transfer it to the Nuvi? The method Garmin uses with the mapupdater program, then connecting Nuvi by usb to computer, and it connects to Garmin server to update DOES NOT WORK.
If I can't update the maps on this thing, it is worthless, and I will go buy a different brand.

In all fairness, the nuvi 360 is a 3+ year old model that has been discontinued for some time now. So that would explain why it ships with older maps installed. Good news is that you can update the firmware, and install the latest maps from Garmin.

Tried to download a map update today and had no sucess. When tring to load to device it stated something about not the correct user. Sounds like someking of security check to make sure I am the registered owner of the device. I do not remember registering the device so not sure of what this is all about. They had no problem debitting my credit card, only had a problem delivering the update!!!! From reading the above comments looks like Magellan or some other brand of GPS is the way to go and throw out this piece of crap. Companies that cannot deliver, but have no problem with taking your money should be put of out business!!!
GARMIN SUCKS BIG TIME!!!! No longer will my company vans use Garmin for GPS's!!!!

I received my Garmin Nuvi 265T as a gift about a year ago. Went to download updates and the communicator software installs, windows recognizes the usb-connected device and installs the drivers, but Garmin's site never recognizes that the device is connected despite reboots, reconnecting, etc. Finally decided to just enter the serial number and get my updates...Turns out, a one-time update is $50.00. That's insane. I will use Cobra, Rand McNally, PC Miler or Magellan in the future. I will also check the terms very carefully when I replace this. Garmin, you will never get $50.00 from me to update a handful of addresses. Screw you. I can see something reasonable but fifty bloody dollars? The device itself was only about $149 so what gives?

Hi Guys,

I've tried to update my maps (PC and GPS) using GArmin Map Update 2.5.14 in Nov 27 2010 but the process was frozen one hour while verifying the files.
Restart, with no success.

I saw above the post suggesting to deactivate the Windows firewall and it WORKED instantly.

Take care, win firewall may be deactivated on the General tab, but activated on the cmplex tab.
Be sure to be deactivated on both places.

Kind regards.

I had similar problems with 2011.3 Europe City Navigator update. First map download failed couple of times, then succeeded. Packet unzipping work ok, and at least mac-version shows progress indicator ok. Then it tries to upload the map to device, which ends first to indication, that load has failed. Device, however, indicates that transfer still continues for several minutes, then it gives error report, that map format is not compatible to device and updater crashes at computer.
Well, first of all, whole Europe is too much for my GPSmap278. Updater indicates this ok, and I have to reduce selection a bit to be able to continue. After seven unsuccesfull trials I got a thought, that what if the package is still too big for the device, even though installer thinks it will fit. I tried to select only a small part of europe for device (and all of it to be used in computer). This time update went ok... well device still claimed the format was not compatible, but map was updated in the device and also visible in Garmin Training Center at computer. I have quite mixed feelings about the whole update process.

I'm glad my desktop computer is over three years old, because the stupid garmin update caused the damned thing to forget where boot files were and not be able to load the operating system. Fortunately I can recover the contents of my desktop, but now, I need to update my maps and cannot. Damn them and the $89US I just spent.

This is a shame. I've just paid twice for my nĂ¼vi205 with that damnable lifetime update option. I've only had the damned thing for a year and I'm NOT calling Canada for something that can be easily fixed by someone getting off his/her lazy ass and creating the proper versions of the software for all platforms, not just 32 bit (which my desktop was).

I have had exactly the same experience with you only a few weeks with my recently acquired nuvi 205W model.

The only thing I can assure that nothing has changed on Garmin's sales tactic and customer response until today (Jan 2011). I wrote them a letter hoping for a refund at least (for the lifetime map update I just bought but I could not use) however, nothing happened. I have promished them and myself that this was the last money they got from me ever...

Purchased Zumo 660, came with maps unlocked. When trying to update the device and maps all self extracting data files had bad configuration data. This issue was solved by extracting the content with winzip and then making the install.

Maps however will not install on a Windows XP Pro. The Map updater program just hangs, nothing gets downloaded at all.

I managed to update the device by using someone elses laptop running Windows 7.

4 days have past, no help from Garmin support besides "Thank you sir, how can I help you, have a nice day crap" no technical help at all just friendly voices and meaningless suggestions how to proceed.

Trying to uodate US & Canada maps (2012.20). Been at it now for four hours and nothing is happening. Shouldn't take a "Lifetime" to install to the device!!!

As long as this thread is still active I'll chime in with my thoughts. I was getting the same error as everyone else while loading the 2012 maps on my MacBook Pro5,5. Safari then FireFox, firewall off and on-no fix. Maps downloaded fine but still quit with said error at about 25 - 50% during install. After many hours of frustration I packed it up and tried it on my wifes' seldom used Intel iMac using Safari. Amazingly, the maps installed quickly and without a hitch. So! With that I have to think that some of these problems are happening on computers that may have issues that go un-noticed otherwise. My macbook pro has been running a little slower lately so maybe whatever is causing that also affected the map install problems. Guess it's time to do some serious maintenance on the laptop. FWIW my 2 cents.

After the third try for my Nuvi 1490LMT using verizon wireless, it suceeded. HOWEVER... time to accomplish was 9 hours and maxed my Verizon 2gig allowance.....
