Comments for Garmin Releases nuvi 465T, Designed Exclusively for the Trucking Industry

Garmin nuvi 465T

I receive a fairly steady flow of questions from people looking for a truck-specific GPS (i.e. a GPS that knows about road restrictions that impact truck drivers), and until now the options were pretty bleak. Thankfully, Garmin has responded to the demand, and released the trucking industry focused nuvi 465T.

Decent offering from Garmin, and will satisfy pent up demand.

Now, I hope they include selective route exclusion, like with the Linux based 5000 and 800 series. Cargo type profile like Hazmat good will be also essential. If both wishes are fullfilled, they will be a home run hit out of the park!

Garmin needs to either come out with a larger display or make this program available for upgrades on the existing GVN 52 units.
Most RV and truckers enjoy the larger display and even if the get 100% of the feature correct, the display size could be an issue.

Infama, hazmat routing is included AFAIK. The only other US device on the horizon that appears to be comparable is from Goodyear, using software supplied by a British company. That device appears to have been delayed.

I wish they would just add the simple feature they had in the 660 that asked if you were driving a car, truck, bike, walking etc... Like I've previously stated, I drive a commercial vehicle for work but it's only a van. So a device like this is overkill for my needs. All I'm asking for is to not route on certain parkways that forbid commercial traffic. This unit seems like it's deigned for inter-state truck drivers. Garmin is trying to force people to buy a seperate gps unit for different needs instead of having these options all in one device like they used to. Glad I still have my 660 but I did want to upgrade it. Looks like the Magellan 4350 will be my first non-garmin gps. Seems like they got greedy and lost a customer over it as well.

I agree with you, Garmin has become greedy, and they will be loosing customer.

You obviously don't understand what this unit can do, your right you better stick to something else Garmin is tops and leads the way. Stay on the porch pal.

I'm am totally new to the GPS world, and because my husband and I bought a 40 ft 5th wheel toy hauler, we're in the research mode for the right GPS for us. I appreciated your review on the 465T Forbidden. I would like to know more of what you think about the 660 you have versus the 465T. One of the Pros I read about the 465T was that it easily switched from Automobile to Truck mode. If you were to buy a new GPS, what would it be?
Thanks

If you're large 40ft 5th wheel toy hauler is subject to the same road restrictions as commercial trucks, then I'd highly recommend the 465T over the 660 (which is now discontinued, by the way).

Fletch,

Where would I find out if our toy hauler is subject to road restrictions? Thanks

Trucks needs to have the "FM Transmitter" (due exccesive cabin noise), 465T is missing "FM Transmitter", after all 465T is made for Trucks.
Price is too high as well.

it does have a fm transmiter

My guess is that the Highway speed limit information will reflect the lower limits for tractor-trailers. Also the ETA calculations would reflect the reduced speeds that trucks would do going up and down steep highway grades. It would be nice if Garmin could use the Lane Assist feature to indicate truck only lanes on highways and the truck lanes at toll booths. Adding POI promixty alerts for truck inspection and truck weight scale stations would be helpful too.

Spelling correction:
promixty = proximity

Sorry for the error.

Thisi is only their first trucking GPS model, more to be introduce soon. Just think of it like a Nuvi 205 and if you want more, you will have to pay more.

I have no problem "paying more," GPS4ME. I paid $700 for my $660 when it came out because of the features it has. The point I made was that now, for those same features, you need to buy 2 seperate units. I didn't hear anybody complaining about cost, did you???

Hmmm. . . MP said the price was too high just above your post. Perhaps you missed it. GPS4Me didn't.

I've heard the 465T will also route you away from bridge height and weight restrictions. If not true, it would be a great help. In reading all of the attributes of the 465T, I didn't see any mention of this...

Commercial vehicle routing can be turned off. Weight/height/cargo restrictions would then be disabled, routing you like any other nuvi.

I'm not sure, as I'm not an experienced professional trucker. I'd suggest calling your local DMV, or checking the DOT's website to verify.

After 4 day's of using the 465t unit start to shut of and on. Returning to the store and waith for the better one to come.
The 456T for the trucking gps it's made very poor quality material. The speaker it's not loud so it's very hard to hear the turn. The unit as no audio out put like other 750 nuvi model. So you can't not connectead to the radio truck speaker. The conection betwen the unit and the 12V with traffic reciver it's also very inconveniet.Like I say they rush to come out on the market but they forget to come with a better quality. The 499.00 asking for it's a little beat to expensive for the quality you got.
So like I say I will waith for the better one to come.

I've been running the northeast with a 13'6-48' tactor trailer, If you've ever been to New Your or Jersey you now how tuff driving can be. Well I've found that the old C series is the best for truckers.

It has been a while since the last comment on 465t.Have there been any up grades it is now Nov.2010 I'm shoping for a GPS that's for a Semi driver. Which unit do you suggest.

It may not be perfect, but on balance, I'd still recommend the 465T over competing truck GPS units. Rand has a unit with good maps and features, but during my testing it crashed multiple times and eventually locked up completely. Garmin's unit, on the other hand, was much more reliable.
