What could be more critical than the quality of maps installed on your GPS? Updated maps ensure that your GPS knows where it's going, and help it make the best possible decisions when figuring out which routes to take. Why does this process only check the preloaded maps for updates and not for what is on the SD card? Are the SD cards able to be updated?

You can't update SD cards since they aren't on the device's hard drive. You must purchase a new SD card. However, you are exempt from this "rule" if you have a device like the nuvi 270, 370, 670, 770, 860, 865T, or 900T. These devices have European maps preloaded onto the device's hard drive in conjunction with the maps of North Amherica (except the 900T, 860, or 865T which only have the European maps preloaded.) So if you live in North America and wish to get "fresh"/updated maps of another continent (like Europe), than you must buy a new SD card.

Sure you can. I can do it with the nuvi 200 even. There is enough room on pretty much any nuvi model to handle a gmapsupp.img (moreso if you don't care about the north america navteq map and get rid of it).

You could always just use openstreetmap.org's data and get your own maps for free... I doubt many people have a whole lot of coin to spare on Navteq's instantly-outdated maps anyway.

You cannot compile it into Garmin's proprietary format that the GPS will be able to read, so this is NOT an option.
