Garmin nuvi 200 vs Garmin nuvi 205

It depends on what Chipset is in the 200. It could be Sirf, Bravo or the best of the lot MTK!

I have a 270 with MTK.

The nuvi 200 I used in this review had SiRF. The nuvi 205 had MTK.

AFAIK, all the current 205's to date have been MTK. I don't see them going to sirf with the excellent performance the 205's have now.

I have both a 260 and a 205. Despite all the improvements of the 205 over the 200 series, with the 205, Garmin took away a major feature of the 200: the display of the upcoming cross street in the green header bar.

This would not be a major loss except for the fact that the 205 frequently fails to show upcoming street names on the map. What is odd about this behavior is that the 205 will show the name of some minor, tiny road and then leave a major state highway unlabeled.

That may have to do with the "Map Detail" setting in the configuration menu on each GPS.

which is better 205 or 260? i plan to buy one & am trying to choose between these two. any helpful insight? tks.

Nope. Map detail on both units is set to "Most."

I understand from comments elsewhere that Garmin's agreement with Navteq no longer permits the use of the upcoming cross street in the header bar. This would be at least acceptable except for the buggy street labeling algorithm.

I just received the 205 as a gift and have yet to get out and use it. My question, is this: Can I turn it on, drive somewhere and back, plug it into the computer & upload a map/route of where I went?

I often take long rides turning wherever and when I get home wish I had made better mental notes of the street names & such.

Thanks for any input you have.

i have a nuvi 200 i bought from walmart about 2 months ago and it has the same software as the 205 pictures on this website, upcoming turn arrow and mph are displayed on map screen.

I think they upgraded the software on my gps and it also has a microphone on the right side of the screen although it is not used.

I use a nuvi 200 in one car and a nuvi 205 in the other car, both are just excellent. The one down side I have with the 200 is on boot up "you" must touch "View map" screen to bring up the street maps. With the 205 it boots up and then several seconds later it goes to the street screen by its self. Anyone know of a way to have the 200 do this?
Thanks,
David in Wichita

Another downside is that the nuvi 200 has been discontinued :)
