So does it have the same 4Hz screen refresh rate of the 2x5 units or has it been updated to 10Hz? I see some sites saying that it's 4Hz and some saying it's 10Hz for these 7x5 units.
I'm not sure - how does one test the screen refresh rate?
Fletch, you can video the device in action and then in slo-mo count the frames. It's easier and more accurate to do so for a full minute.
Didn't mean to post anonymous, Fletch.
BTW, One of these days (soon?) I'm going to be pushing you for one of the new devices to evaluate. ;)
At first glance it does look to be a bit thicker than the current 7x0's. Good to see they kept the active mount.
Hey Fletch...thanks for the teaser. Would realy like to know your take on the 880 (with voice recognition) vs the 785T (with lane assist, 3D building view, 1000 waypoints/favorites/locations input and 5 hour battery life) for real life useage. In other words which one is more atuned to the everyday user.
Thanks.
Hi Fletch!
Was on the verge of buying the 780; then this badboy was announced. I think the Lane Assist is HUGE! And the "free" traffic too! Can't wait to read those "golden words" from the Master. No pressure Fletch...just fun!!

Please comment on the A2DP streaming and if FM transmitter is any better. The speaker on the 780 distorts and rattles over 70% and FM transmitter sux.
BTW, The 785T does not come with free traffic, only 3 months of MSN Direct which is $50/yr or $129 lifetime.
That puts the 785T at a $230 Price Premium over the 765T if you are going for lifetime. Do you think it's worth it for Gas Prices, Weather, Stocks, News, Local Events and LiveMaps Send.
I have the 780 and the Mapsend Can takes hours to receive a destionation sent from Live Maps. I found that it is quicker to just plug it into USB and use Google or Mapquest Plugin.
The Weather, Movies, Gas, News, Stocks I can all get on my WM Phone.
I am interested in upgrading though for Lane Assist, 3d, and A2DP
I like the Silver/Metal Trim on the 780 better than the all black 785. It makes the 780 look more expensive than the 785.
Anybody else agree?
While the silver trim may look better (which is a matter of opinion) the practical side of an all black casing is the minimization of reflected glare (from metalic trim) caused by bright sun light.
OK...Fletch, No pressure, we know you're gonna us the 411 on the 785T. However, the suspense is keeping me up nights. Just kidding....but can you give us an ETA on your review? Thanks!
In your review, please do not skimp on the A2DP portion of the review and what is up with the 2nd Mic Hole on the right?
Can I pair my phone to the Nuvi and then pair Nuvi to Either a Headset or BT Speaker System. Will all Sounds not just music go through my BT Speaker?
"At first glance it does look to be a bit thicker than the current 7x0's. Good to see they kept the active mount."
The Nuvi 785 is not much thicker than the Nuvi 880, about 1/16 to 1/8"
"Can I pair my phone to the Nuvi and then pair Nuvi to Either a Headset or BT Speaker System. Will all Sounds not just music go through my BT Speaker?"
No, you can only pair the Nuvi to your cell phone, use the FM to modulate the audio if you need to hear it louder.
That is the case with the current 7XO series.
The 765 and 785 are listed has having A2DP that means BT Streaming.
The FM Modulator on current 7XO is not adequate.
I am requesting that In his review that he commnents on the FM tranmitter( better, worse, same) as well as implementation of A2DP streaming.

I am not Fletch but owning both units, I can tell you both have some great features and limitations.
I love the lane positioning and I guess if you drive in the City a lot like Los Angeles, this would have to be a MUST have feature. The voice recognition feature is nice for everyday use, it is by far one of the best VR feature that I have used but it is not perfect by far.
Notice some small changes but over all the Nuvi 785 seems to be somewhat sluggish than the Nuvi 880 for calculation etc.
When will Best Buy have the 785T?
Wow, 10 days and still no review. Does the new model have that many bugs??
Alright alright...I'm working on it! These reviews don't just pop out overnight, you know...
10 days is not overnight.
Tell Me how I can be a reviewer and I will whip it out in a couple hours no more than a day
I've done a review at another forum. Anything you'd do in a day would not be thorough nor reliable.
Can you post the PDF User Guide with your review.
It still isn't available on Garmin's Wbsite.
How can fletch put up the user guide if it isn't available? I mean, he could scan all the pages in but that would take too long.
I am assuming that Garmin like most vendors these days no longer supplies the full printed manual but a simple QSG, and instead puts the Full User Guide PDF on a CD or in the Device itself(via mass Storage)
I do indeed have the .pdf version of the 785T's instruction manual, but I suspect I'm not allowed to publish it without Garmin's permission. I'll check and see what's possible.
If you can't publish it, could you please forward it to me via email.
I interested in learning about the A2DP streaming.
Hey Fletch, don't sweat the small stuff. It's good that some us remain "Anonymous" to hide our ignorance of the complexity of a thourough review. A suggestion for future reference would be not to mention a time frame of any sort or if you must - push it out a couple of weeks. That way...we idiots won't expect something overnight. Hang in there!
Thanks for the comments, GPS4ME. It's interesting that you say the 785T seems a bit sluggish compared to the 880. Especially, so since the 880 was accused of being sluggish upon its initial release. I believe a firmware update resolved the problem for the 880. However, it was my understanding from all the pre-release press on the 785T that it was suppose to employ a new and faster OS. It will be interesting to read Fletch's take on calculation/re-calculation speed of the 880 vs the 785T. Final question for you GPS4ME...if you had to part with either the 880 or 785T which one would you keep?
looks like the 785t isn't ready for prime time yet ! imo , I don't think delaying a good review would be in garmins's interest . But if it had problems I think fletch would delay to give them time to fix the unit , before it gets out there.
Fletch,
User Guides are up on Garmins' site as of this morning, so no longer needed.
In your Review can you please confirm that I can BOTH have my Phone Pair for BT Calls and Paired to A2DP Speaker at the same time. It is not clear from reading the maual.
It would be great dissapointment if it was one or the other.
The FM Tranmitter and the Internal Speaker in current 780 are inferior. I am hoping to to Stream to a more powerful BT Speaker and stream all audio: Guidance, Music, and BT Calls.
Being that the 7x5 units are available for sale today, your review will be published some time very soon.
Thanks
It has been 13 days since the unboxing.
In that amount of time one could have driven across the country from LA to Miami to Portland, Maine to Seattle and then back to San Diego(over 10,000 Miles driving at 60 MPH for 12 hours a day ans still be weaiting for the 785T review.
I agree with you, Tired. You should demand a refund of your subscription fee... oh, wait... you didn't pay one.
LOL!
"Tired's" patience doesn't look to be one of his strong points.
Why the review of another Magellan. When you could have spent the time prepping for the 785.
No one cares. 4 Years ago they had 50% of the market, now what do they have something less than 15%
They probably release as many new versions as Garmin and basically add no new features accept a new model number.
Look at the number of comments here vs the number on the Magellan Review
If you read some of the comments on Fletch's recent nuvi reviews, you'll see that he was taken to task, primarily by TomTom "lurkers", especially on routing comparisons. Competing device owners are sitting in the bushes waiting to point out any potential inaccuracy to call the entire review into question. I imagine Fletch is taking the time to change and/or adjust some of his procedures to minimize that. I'd do the same. It took me nearly a month of using a TomTom930 side by side with my nuvi 760 to be pretty confident that the review I was writing was both accurate and as fair as I could be. Many of my initial feelings changed considerably after significant use.
I read the Magellan Review.
Actually not that bad of unit.
It has features that Garmin still has not incorporated even in to the new 7x5 Line:
1)Quick Spell
2)Route Detour with Distance Selection
3)Individual Road Avoidance
4)POI List by Exit
The Route Avoidance and Detour Prompt features are avialble in the 880 and 5000, but for some reason did not make it into the 7X0 or 7x5 Sereies.
Streat pilot users have been beging Garmin for years since the launch of the Nuvi line to incorporate Detour Prompt and Custom Road Avoidance.
I wonder why they continue to leave it the entire 7xx Line
Garmin has re-introduced custom avoidances in the newer Linux-based devices, which include the 5000 and 8x0's. Those based on Garmin's proprietary coding have not received them. Two different engineering teams within Garmin, one Linux and one not, is probably the difference maker.
Warren,
You think that the design engineers would get on the same page and have a baseline of Standard features that should be in all platform lines.
Custom Avoidances & Route Detour Prompt that are now in the 880 and 5000( Linux) but not 7xx line are fairly standard features with almost every other GPS vendor: Magellan, Tom Tom, Navigon etc and (IMHO) should have been in the NUVI Line from the beginning with the 3xx series.
Depending on where you are with GPS experience, you could be correct about Garmin and the avoidances. The nuvi line was designed for out-of-the-box simplicity and solid, trouble-free use. Whether they've always hit that mark is for another discussion. But for what Garmin designed it for, it has been a huge success. It was never intended to be a Street-pilot replacement with even more features. As far as avoidances are concerned, I of course have those with my TomTom. Now if you asked how often I used them, I'd say not once. Used for 5 months now and have never had a reason to avoid a specific road. I may be the exception, but I doubt it. I would really like to see a Garmin professional line for consumer use. The problem is that for the hardware and upfront design and engineering costs, there probably is not really that much of a market for one. We here are definitely not typical users, and still we'd probably say no thanks if offered those features you think you might use one day, but at a $200 or more premium. Not when the existing line covers about every feature you need for daily use on the highway.
When can we expect the Review Posting?
I too would like to know when we could expect the review.
I'm starting to wonder what is wrong with this model if the review is taking this long.
2 WEEKS AND COUNTING Since UNBOXING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT GIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on guys, no need to be rude to Fletch.
Hey Fletch,
Can you tell me if the 785T allows you to disable autozoom? I have a 780 and it's one of the most annoying things...
Thanks,
Dave
I can't believe all harassing comments in this forum. Yes, if you are PAYING for a reviewing service, and that service is tardy, then by all means...
Anyone who has a problem should go out and get your own Nuvi and review it for themselves. Better still, post the review for the benefit of others, and await all the calls of "hey you missed this" or "are you crazy that sucked!".
I've had 785T for over a week (Ebay sale) and the 765T for a few days. I will tell you one thing I hate about then. When a call comes in...I no longer hear it.....maybe a quick 'blip" but then I see that a message pops up saying (for example (home calling). I hate this! I want my old ringing alerts back! Plus, when I call someone, I liked hearing the phone ringing on the other end...now it's almost mute until the other person picks up and talks.,...I don't like that either. How can I get this to work like the 760/780 did?
Paul,
Can you Pair the 7x5's to both your Phone and then a BT Headset or Speaker using the A2DP?
I have no qualms about asking why the review is taking so long to post. Fletch is the one who posted "teaser" photos on October 3 and said the full review would be posted "within a few days". It has now been fifteen days. That is not a few.
I am getting Blue in Tooth waiting for this review.
I am expecially interested in the new Bluetooth Stack.
I have heard that Garmin dropped Parrot in exchange for TI.
I have heard that some are having problems with ring thru.
Does the Phone Book, and Call History sync ( last dial, incoming, miised) work like on the 780 in real time vs a one time Phone book import that other some other vendors use.
How is the A2DP implementaion work?
Can I Pair my phone to the NUVI and then Pair Nuvi to Blue Tooth Speaker and rout all sounds from Audio Plyaer, Calls, Guidance through the bT Speaker?
I am anxiously waiting. Another blog site did mini review of 765T and gave no mention to the Bluetooth Stack.
Hopefully the amount of time that you are takng to post review will address all my BT questions.
I don't quite understand the demanding tone of some comments posted.
Thanks for doing such a thorough job on your past reviews.
I'm sure when it's complete, the review on this model from Garmin will be just as well done.
I think "GadgetGuy 2008" was reasonble but "2 Weeks" wasn't.
I'm also eagerly awaiting the review. I'm torn between a 785T and 880. I wish the 785T had custom avoidances (and maybe ASR), or I wish the 880 had Lane Assist, 3D Building View.
NUVI,
I agree I think that Garmin Stinks they announce the 880 months before it is actually shipped to retailers and then within a few weeks of shipping the 880they announce the 7x5 Line!!!!!!
Will they ever come out with a single NUVI that that has all the features we want:
880 doesn't have Lane Assist, 3d Buildings, nor A2DP of new 7x5 but it does have voice activation, Video Support through VIB 11(now discontinued), and custom route avoidances and detour prompt.
The 7x5 doesn't have custom route avoidance or detour prompts as you mentioned that the 880 has.
I am in the same situation as you, I was interested in 880 for custom avoidances and Video Support, but I really like the new features of the 7x5 including prospect of "Free Life Time Traffic"
I have the 780 now and MSN direct is slow to update, it can take hours to receive a Live Map Send and even days to fully update the Movie Guide and Traffic Incidents are typically cleared by the time MSN updates my Nuvi. I hear others say that TMC is more accurate and faster to update.
Honestly of I go with 7x5, I most likely will go with 765T and not the 785T.
The 785T is $100 more than the 765T and only comes with 3 Months of MSN.
Lifetime MSN will run another $129, making the 785T, $229 more expensive then the 765T, full the extra data content.
After having the 660, 680, and 780, I can't justify the premium for the 785T.
Any body else agree/disagree
I just bought the 880 and it does have Traffic Update with $50/yr subscription or $129 lifetime.
Your thoughts of using the 765 rather than the 785 make perfect sense, especially since it appears you already have an MSN cable, which is perfectly usable with the 765. You might als0 consider the 755 if you don't need bluetooth. Your MSN cable is also compatible with that.
Even if I used the GDB-50( MSN Receiver) it wouild still cost me $129 for Lifetime MSN Direct Contact( Which MSFT only guarantees service till 2012)and based on my experience, I though it was a good idea when TMC/ Clear Channel Taffic Ccost $60/year vs $49/Year or $129?life for MSN.
Now that garmin is offering TMC/Navteq(Traffic.com) for free lifetime( ad supported)I don't think the MSN Direct is worth the extra $129 even if I purchase the 765T and not use its traffice receiver.
My recommendation is to others that are deciding between 765t & 785T is to SAVE the Money and go with 765T. You will save $229 in the long run unless you think that the Following data is woth the extra money:
* Weather
* Movie Listings (takes days to fully update)
* Gas Prices (sorted by proximity not cheapest)
* MSN Live Map Send(takes hours) better to use Google/Mapquest Plug in
* News (One Sentence Headline)
* Stocks
* Local Events( Really for Closest Major City)
BTW, I can get all this "EXTRA" information on my Cell Phone with a data plan.
The real value is in the traffic and that is now free with the 755 and 765T
For me the crucial is Bluetooth, expecially the a2DP. The Built in Speaker in 780 sucks and the FM transmitter sucks even more. I want to pair a much more powerful Bluetooth Speaker to hear guidance and voice calls.
You may be in a poor reception area for MSN. My movie listings are current within minutes of turning my nuvi on. "Send to GPS" via maps.live has never taken more than 30 minutes to appear in my favorites, often in 10 minutes or less. Yes, gas prices are sorted by proximity, which makes complete sense out on the road, tho it would also be convenient to have the option of sorting by price. My news is also frequently more than a one-sentence headline, but you're correct than more often than not it's more like the info in the scroll line at the bottom of a cable news channel screen. I've used local events several times here in Central Florida and found several weekend activities we've chosen to go to. A tap on the activity gives details/prices and a "Go" button. Yes, I could use my cell for some of these, but popping it up on my GPS is more convenient with less user input IMO. If you're in a solid MSN coverage area, I personally find it much more useful than simple TMC traffic, and I've used both. As far as one giving more accurate traffic info than the other, not so in my experience. Neither is real dependable, with tie-ups often cleared before getting to them, others not reported at all. But it's still better than not having it. I saved about 1/2 hour on a trip to Tampa yesterday with traffic down to one lane on I-4. A quick tap on "Avoid" routed me around it with little delay.
Yup, actually I'm really more inclined to get a 755T or 850. I don't really care much for Bluetooth. I just want the key navigation features all in one device.
Let's hope Garmin converges on 1 model that supports everything.
Has anyone notice that Fletch did a Full Review on the Magellan and there are only 2 Comments and yet this Unboxing has already 55 Comments and yet no review.
Tells me that he put his time reviewing the wrong unit.
Looks like no one cares about that review and we are waiting with baited breath for this one.
Hopefully we will see the Nuvi 785t soon, also would have probabbly been better to have requested a 765T vs 785T to test.
Being that we all are familiar with MSN Direct and would have rather seen review of New Free Traffic Service.
But then maybe Garmin also provided him with one of the NEW GTM 20(registratio code for Free Navteq Trafic vs $60/year Clear Channel Reg Code) so that he can comment.

You do have tha ability to pair the &X5T's to both a phone and BT headset or speaker....but I only have a phone to pair it with. My wife is completely pissed with the way it handles calls received and sent. Plus the sound volums is lower which is annoying. The 765 is going for sure and the 760 going back in my wife's car. I'll still give my 785T a chance to see. Just pisses me off that, when I make a call...I have to be quiet as a church mouse in my car to even tell it's ringing the phone. Barely audible. When I get calls....it does not always ring...and I have to be lucky that I see the phone icon pop up to know someone is calling me. Volume is definitely worse that the 760/780 I had before. I definitely do like some of the more customizable features....like changing the time arriving at destination to...time left till destination, or distance to destination...etc. They seemed to have learned a few things that Tomtom had right.
I wouldn't read too much into the number or the lack thereof regarding comments (2) for the Magellan. Comment entry appears to be locked or corrupted for some reason (at least through my ISP).

Paul,
Thanks for Comments on 7x5's.
So in your opinion Bluetooth on the new unit STINKS and you are recomending keeping your 760 Unit over the new ones even with the other new features?
I was really looking forward to the New Bluetooth with A2DP to augment the inferier built in Speaker
It is shame that Garmin didn't stick with Parrot. Maybe they went with TI for cost cutting measures.
Other than the lack of ring thru-any other BT Probelms?
Does the phone book sync still function in the same manner as 7x0 units?
Is internal Speaker: Better, Worse, the Same?
Does your units hsve one or two mic holes( Fletch's picture shows two) id has two- do you notice any differene in quality of your voice to your caler?
Thanks for Pinching in while Fletch has bee absent
Do these new units even use Sirf Chip sets any more?
Coming from the 760 (TMC) - before that was 680 (MSN Direct). Eager to try MSN Direct again after all of the recent upgrades.
Some notes:
Lane assist is nice - the lane indicators for the next turn remain in the upper left but the visual with road signs flashes on the screen momentarily as you get close, and is easy to miss.
Have not seen 3D building view yet.
I am delighted with the visual upgrades. The scrolling menus (all menus scroll smoothly) and the new smooth scrolling nature of the map screen as you travel are nice to have.
Being able to assign pictures to all my favorites is a plus - I took pictures of a few of my favorite stops and added them to the SD card and they were easy to attach in the main menu.
No improvement on the FM transmitter, it's always sucked. Why don't they put in 87.9? The volume does not rattle at 100% like the 760 did. The volume seems more "bass-y" and less tinny.
The touch screen seems to be a lot less sensitive (have to press hard).
The main map view is getting cluttered but all indicators are in the right place. Speed limit along the bottom left next to current speed. Traffic button always on the main screen for quick access to traffic options - nice.
Ability to show traffic data on the current map view (like in Google Maps or Tomtom) is really nice. Works well.
Can't tell if they use the Sirf chipset - no longer tells you when it's starting up. I get a fix quicker than with the 760.
One mention about the Bluetooth - it reads all my contacts and missed/dialed/received calls with names from my phone (Palm Treo). The 760 did not do this. Just gave me numbers for all these readings and did not read my phone book. That being said, the Bluetooth implementation still stinks. Took me about 15 attempts to pair my phone for the first time. Volume is barely audible over the internal speaker - you'd have to use the FM transmitter for the Bluetooth to be usable I think...
One of the mic holes on the front appears to be a fraud. Speaking into one results in MUCH louder volume than the other.
I can't test A2DP because I do not have an A2DP-compliant device - I think. Trying to add my Treo as an audio device results in it being added as a phone. Oh well.
Anyway that's all I can think of. Visually a nice upgrade, functionally ... well the jury is still out. I'm enjoying it. There will be a 760 for sale very soon!
I AM STARTING TO FEEL AS IF FLETCH HAS ABANDONED US!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess it’s time that something be said regarding the length of time it has taken to see a review of the 785T. That something is not to bash Fletch because that type of verbal abuse and degradation accomplishes nothing. However, the lack of comment regarding the delayed review of the 785T in and of itself is damaging. The contingent collateral damage associated with not producing a review; or someone associated with this site not offering a plausible comment as to the reason for the delay, reflects negatively on GPSMagzine.
There comes a point when it’s time for damage control by a publication (fee based or not) to ensure the continued respect and support of its readers. In this world of “gotta-have-it...and-now” one would do well to produce within a quasi-promised time frame or feel the wrath of their constituency. I only know of one company that has a “Teflon” touch with marketing delays and that’s Apple. OK I confess…I have three (3) Apple products. Nevertheless, it was clearly an error in judgment to promise a review in a few days and not deliver on the promise.
For the record, a few days is generally accepted as more than two (2) but less than ten (10). Publishing a review on the Magellan in the interim only served to make matters worse. Hyping the 785T without a timely review based upon reader expectations was not a good move. I hope a lesson was learned by GPSMagazine on how not to antagonize its readers.
Realistically, I’d think that it takes more than 10 days to properly review a device. However, that being said…one shouldn’t infer a promise that can’t be realistically accomplished. As a sales professional I know …it’s just not good business. So,…when do we see the review?
Please put down your pitchforks people - rest assured I am busy working away on the review, which, I assure you, will be the most comprehensive review available anywhere on the Net.
As with all my reviews, they take longer to complete than the quick "lightning" reviews found on other sites. But that's why I started GPSmagazine - thoroughness of reviews.
If you want a quick 1 paragraph summary, by all means head over to CNET. If you want to feel like you bought the GPS and are holding it in your hand, please be patient and let me complete this review.
It's taking slightly longer than anticipated, as I've implemented new, more rigorous testing criteria (routing tests now involve actual driving, among other changes). Also, these new nuvi models have several features new to Garmin's product line, and I'm making sure to thoroughly test them.
FYI - I anticipate publishing the review on Thursday, October 23rd.
Thank you for providing an update.
Well done, Fletch. Looking forward to your review on Thursday, October 23rd, or shortly thereafter (smile). Please, don't forget to give us your opinion of the 785T vs the 880 based upon which one has the better feature-set for everyday use. Thanks, again!
Thanks for the update.
Glad to see that you are still with us.
I was Starting to think that the new unit Guided you into a Lake and you didn't make it out!!!!!
I hope that your review fully tests the new Bluetooth Stack.
The a2DP implmentation is the one feature I am most interested in learning about.
Some new owners have been voicing concerns with the new new Bluetooth. bit Noone had mentioned the a2DP.
Thanks for your hard work and efforts on a thorough review.
One feature I wish the Nuvi line would have is a remote so I could ask the GPS to play a prompt to tell me what the next turn is. That's safer than reaching for the GPS or glancing at the display.
The 850/880 allows one to press the button and say "Next" I think. If similar feature (without speech recognition) were available for other models I'd be very happy.
It's Thursday.
We are enthusiastically waiting for the review. Hopin g that you are actually goin to publish today.
I am looking to upgrade from 780, and I would just go out and buy a 765T/785T myself and compare, but almost every store charges restocking fee of 15% on GPS ($105 on$699 and $90 on $599)
That's quite a bit of change to test it out myself before committing to upgrading.
So your review is going to crucial. So hoping that you cover everything exhaustivly in comparison to 7x0 Series:
*Free Traffic vs Paid TMC and MSN
*Lane Assist & Freeway Junctions
*3D Buildings (how pervasive on maps)
*NEW Bluetooth: TI with A2DP vs Parrot: Same, Better, or Worse
*Internal Speaker & FM Transmitter: Same, Better , Worse
*Screen Brightness (Outdoor Viewability): Same, Better or Worse
*GPS Chipset:Still Sirf or Something Else?
*GPS Quick Fix/Hot Fix: Impressions?
*Is it worth the Upgrade?: Selling off Old Model at a loss and Spending Hard Cash on new Model
Thanks
I am looking forward to you answers and impressions to all these questions.
Countdown: 5 1/2 Hours until Friday 10/24/2008 and still no review Published?
I am a betting man, predict that no review will be posted today.
I hope that I am wrong.
But in the meantime I am still raising my pitch fork.
Never bet against the house. I'm working on it as we speak...
I hope you get that I am just joking around and no ill feelings.
I have never in my life been so excited about reading a review.
The 7x5 is either going to be an industry benchmark unit(save for the lack of voice command and avoidance & detour features of 8x0) or its going to be a bust.
BTW are you EST or PST?
If EST you've got only 1 1/2 hours!!!!!!!
The Clock Beats Down!!!!!!!
I am gunning for you to make it now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its now Friday, Oct 24th EST
Looks like Fletch didn't make the 10/23 Publish time, at least for East Coasters.
He's got less than 3hours now for those on the West Coast.
Hoping he can get it published, or else all raise the Pitch Forks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, I've used the 785T (and a 765t) for over a week now and I'm getting used to it. As I said before, a frustrating thing is, when you make a call to someone, you can't clearly hear the other end ringing. It's severely muffled until they pick up and start talking. Makes you think the call is not even being placed.
The sound quality of the phone is, in my opinion, worse than the 780/760 but not so much so.
Things I like
Lane assist is a nice new feature and works well. I've travelled a few states (NJ/PA/NY) and it was always right on. The views where you actually can see some (very few) of the actual signs is quaint, and actually was help one time for me as I was speeding 80 mph.
On the main menu you can customize the bottom right indicator to either
1) Direction of Travel
2) Evalvation
3) Time of day
When you select a spot to go to, the lower right can be set to either
1)Estimated Time of Arrival
2) Distance to Destination
3) Estimated Time to Destination
4) Direction of Travel
5) Elevation
6) Time of day
One thing I thought was strange (and did not know if my older models could do it), but when i search for a city, input just a few letters and search...I get cities in Thailand, Singapore, etc. I mean, on a US model with ONLY US maps..what the heck is the point?
Friends and fellow GPS Users unite....stand up and fight....stand up and raide your Pitch Forks.... it is now Friday, Oct 24, 2008 and no review............
Fletch told us to put down down our Pitch Forks and that he was hoping to have it published by yesterday, Thursday, Oct 23.
Earlier.....I bet that he would miss the mark and he replied...
"Never bet against the house. I'm working on it as we speak..."
Well, I bet against the house and I won the bet.......but I lost and you all lost.......because there is still no review.
So raise those Pitch Forks..............
What other sites can you recommend to find a review of the 785t?
IMO reviews here are the best... so we have to be patient...
While we all wait for that review:
I've been using the 785T for a week now and it is indeed a very good unit except the unit becomes really hot (mounted on the craddle) after only 1-2 minutes of use. The bluetooth is just not working well... I tried 4 differents smartphone (iPhone, HTC Windows Mobile, HTC Touch, Blackberry) and it is sporadic...
hopefully, our friend fletch will expose his full testing on the bluetooth area.
The good news is that if Fletch is indeed in contact with Garmin, they WILL publish a (much needed) FW upgrade for the BT.
Fletch,
"Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner"......I bet against the house and won.
But in reallity I lost and your readers are starting tp lose respect for your journalistic integrity.
I woke up this morning and thoroughly expected to see the post.
When I went to bed(after 12AM PST)I felt like a child, on Christmas eve, excited about the prospect of what Santa would bring.
But Wait......I awoke to Reality this morning......there is No Santa and there is no review.........
I request that you Overnight me the review unit, and I will have a thorough review published by no latr than Sunday.
I ask again why did you Post an Unboxing, say that you would have review in a couple of days but instead publish a review of a Magellan Unit in the interim which came out of nowhere-no previous unboxing on this one?
It has now been 3 weeks, exactly 21 days since the unboxing and yet no review.
My Pitch Fork is raised in the air as high as it can go and I am now now adding fire to chase to track down the Frankenstein that you have created.
Sincerely,
Pitch Fork
OMG "Pitch Fork", what are you 12? Get a life, and wait. It will be posted when it's ready I am sure.
Don S,
OMG
No I am not 12.......if I was 12.......how would I be able to publish a review.......I wouldn't be old enough to drive.....stupid......
BTW I am posting my own opinion......just like you are yours.
Oh and I am 16.......

I think Fletch is giving time to Garmin engineers to fix Bluetooth issues to make sure the review gets an "Editor's Choice" or not?. Funny thing is that it's good news for us...
As a side note, I tried getting in contact with Garmin support and each time I speak to a very friendly "agent" I get a different story. Sometine my unit is defective or I have to update an already updated unit or sometime they don't "officially support" my smartphones or as a last resort an agent suggested I get a refund because they can't help me.
hah... let's forget about this non sense and read the review. but wait... humm ... the review's not out yet... damn... :)
Has anyone noticed that Garmin/Clear Channel are now offering Lifetime traffic renewals for $60 Onetime fee.
This would be for older models ie 6xx, 7x0 that use GTM 20 Traffic receiver.
The New xx5 units already come with Lifetime traffic using Navteq Traffic.com but with ad support and special bundled version of GTM 20( unique product reg code)
There is no mention of ad support like on the the new xx5 series.
As both a 780 and 680 owner I am quite dissapointed by this news. I spent the extra money because TMC traffic was $60/year while MSN offerred lifetime renewal for $129.
I really don't think the extra content is worth a hill of beans, but I figured in the long run it would be more cost effective to go with x80 units because of the lifetime renewal.
Break evenpoint is about 3 years based on $100 price premium and $129 renewal vs $60/yr) and after 3 years an X60 would become $60/yr more expensive.
Now that equation is lopsided. With the Free Lifetime TMC there is no longer a breakeven point.
The x8x Models are now simply just more expensive for the extra content. There is no longer a breakeven Point.
Anybody else buy a X8X unit based on a similiar cost analysis and now feels cheated?
Fletch,
I am deeply disappointed in your inability to provide your review in the timeframe promised. As others have pointed out, it has now been 21 days since you posted your unboxing pictures. I am deeply concerned as to the continued delays of your review.
I would like to believe that you are indeed performing a truly independent review and that you are not a Garmin shill. The truth will be revealed soon enough. If you publish a review which discusses flaws in the unit and say that an update will be released in a few days, then it will be clear to me that you purposely delayed the review in order to give Garmin time to issue an update.
While I can appreciate the amount of effort that you obviously put into these reviews, you have to acknowledge the simple fact that it does not take 21 days to review one of these units. Thus, one has to wonder why the continued delays in publishing your review.
I totally agree with GadgetGuy2008.
At this rate a new President will be named before we know if this unit is a winner or we just stick with the incumbment 7X0 series.
Still No review?
What gives?
It's alive!! I checked at 4:38 PM ET
Found this site as I wanted to know more about the 765/785. But all I found was this is a big joke. I posted more review on these models than this "Fletch" dude. Definitely see no need to come back here for anything important.
As for the BT, it definitely is much more sporatic than the 760/780. I lose connections but you don't know it until you try to call and nothing happens. The phone icon is still there. You then hav to shut it off and back on again to try to get it to resync. I miss my 780, but will put up with the 785T because of the other features. Not sure if lifetime traffic is on this one, I think just the 765T. I know I had BT upgrades I had to download from straight out of the box...but it seems even that is not enough to fix the problems.
You people need to go to other sites for revies...this on eis a joke.
not preaching for anyone but I think we're all waiting here because of the quality of past reviews here... if it wasn't for that, I think this 785T unboxing thing would have been deserted long time ago...
Fletch! stop talking to Garmin support team and start putting down your review "as is" :)
I am not a real technical type person so please bear with me if this sounds like a question that I should be able to answer by reading this review.
This model has all of the features I am looking for (actually the 765T is the one I want) and Bluetooth phone connectivity is critical for me.
I have read about the improved speaker/microphone in this unit and I read about FM static and other FM issues and work-arounds. Most of this I simply don't understand in all honesty.
My key question is: Overall, how is the Bluetooth sound quality when using the Garmin by itself to answer and send calls?
Thanks, John....
I have a gift card that will expire this week and I don't know if I should buy the 785t or 765t? Help anyone. I am a traveling salesman but do not need maps outside of the US. Is the life time purchase of MSN worth it?
