Garmin Map Update 2009

Garmin's Map Update 2009 for North America is out, and available for about $65. Garmin's website still says the update is due out later this month, but it looks like a number of retailers (including Amazon) are claiming the update is in stock and ready to ship.

The 2009 update is valid for all Garmin nuvi series, most StreetPilot models, and Zumo units. Read on for all the details, including what's changed in the new maps.

It would be nice if they let you update two devices per disc. That way there would be some point in brand loyalty to Garmin. At this kind of pricing for a single device, it merits serious consideration of getting a new unit from another vendor! (And they still haven't added updates I sent them in 2005).

The $65 per year for the map updates and $60 per year for the traffic service is $10 per month which isn't very far from the far superiour Dash ($10-$13 depending on how much you pay in advance).

Garmin International is not above the same level of scrutiny
that got greedy companies investigated like the recent AIG,
and Automobile Manufacturers. Garmin International is
OVER charging for map updates. Americans are currently in
a recession as it is factual todate; March 2009.

To say you only get 3 updates a year, I see they price
the map update over $90.00. This is like forcing
people to pay to breathe regular air. Due to corrupt
ethics and greed of American companies most employees,
consumers, homeowners, etc are all under-water.

I'd like to see an investigation of Garmin International.
I've noted thru my research they might have stolen
intellectual properties of 2 or more companies.
Their cocky demeanor is to keep their prices the same,
for dumb consumers to keep funding Garmin's legal
staff by continuing to pay Garmin's high prices.

Article One Partners, LLC, a global community working to legitimize the validity of patents, today announced seven new patent studies, as well as two winners who will share the $50,000 prize for discovering prior art in Article One's Garmin/SP Technologies Patent Study. The Study relates to a graphical interface providing a touch screen keyboard display that may not be minimized, maximized, closed or deleted. In a 2008 complaint filed in federal court in Chicago, SP Technologies, LLC (SPT) accused Garmin Limited and Garmin International, Inc. of infringing SPT's patent. Garmin is a market leader in the portable navigation devices market.

The determination of winners was based on Article One's analysis, including review and analysis of outside counsel, leading Article One to reach the opinion that the prior art is invalidating because it teaches what is claimed in the subject patent U.S. Patent No. 6,784,873 B1. Article One believes that the claimed inventions would have been obvious to persons of ordinary skill in the relevant art at the time of the inventions. The Study was won by Article One community members, called Advisors, from the United States. Two Advisors submitted publicly available evidence, known as prior art, that predates the subject patent. The first prior art reference is a 1991 international (WIPO) publication of a pending patent application assigned to MicroSlate Inc.; and the second is an excerpt from an out-of-print 1998 textbook on a Microsoft Windows Operating system, Windows CE.

Importantly, only a U.S. federal court or the U.S. Patent Office can invalidate a U.S. patent. Article One is announcing only its own opinion based on its analysis of the prior art for purposes of determining winners to its Patent Studies. A court or the Patent Office may disagree with Article One's opinion. The prior art is listed in the announcement of the winning Patent Study and may be viewed on Article One's website.

Agree, the price point is too high when you look a the $80 Navigon Deal for three years of map updates. The fact that they also use NAVTEQ just proves that Garmin is overcharging for the map updates.

Hey Fletch,
You still didn't say what the new maps will include (new POI's, new roads, etc.) Also, will the Garmin devices that come out after the map is released, contain the new 2009 maps or will I still have to purchase the map update??? Please reply or add more information.

| Reply to This Comment

It would be nice to let you download the maps for Free from the website. After paying $300 for my unit. It doesn't seem ethical. i just bought the unit 2 wks ago. Should have got that other brand

I agree! I had a huge fight with customer support this week becasue I found after purchasing my update map, that it is locked to only update ONE GARMIN UNIT! I purchased garmins for myself and my two daughters and now after $1,500 spent on units, I have to spend $80 EACH for map updates. We all live in high new construction areas and the new developments/roads are necessary for us. even if only updating every couple of years, it basically repurchases unit every few years. I will never buy another garmin for this reason. No resolution even from a supervisor at Garmin support.

Seriously did you expect to receive buy one, get two free??? All GPS Manufacturers that provide map updates only let you install them on (1) unit. Why would they compile the raw map data from Navteq to useable maps for their Garmin units for free. That makes no economic sense. This would also probably explain why they are still in business making great Nav units year after year. They are making money. Well, that's their job. They don't have to give away free map data to provide good customer service. This is similar to walking into Walmart and paying for one copy of Halo 3, and trying to walk out with (3) copies because you have 3 xboxs at home. Not going to happen for obvious reasons. If you don't like that example, buy Windows Vista or Max OS Leopard and try to install on (3) machines, then when you can't, call CS and find out what they have to say when you want 2 more FREE copies/Licenses. And yes, these units will still work for many years even w/o updates, geesh.

it is nice to read that Garmin is working to update the Maps but on the other hand paying $65 per year after paying $700 for the unit. As much as i like my Nuvi that's the kind of act that makes me look at the competition when i'll want to get another GPS for our second car.

Rene, if you just bought the unit and have registered at Garmin.com, you'll receive the map update free. New Purchase cutoff reportedly is March 1st for free update

if your going to do th eupgrade you better do it before 60 days or it is NOT free, I bought on for my wife at Christmas,m and she hadn;t put i tto use untill this month (april) so we went to do the updates and they charged me! really! know why? becuase we had turned the unit on when she got it for christmas and let it find satellites

Marc, it's better than paying TomTom $100 for their map update.

We paid $70 to update our 2yr old Magellan several months ago, so this doesn't seem unreasonable. However, a 6 weeks grace for recently purchased units seems a little short, though.

I just bought my Nuvi 760 and it should be arriving tomorrow or Wednesday. Does this mean I can get this update for free?

Thanks.

I bought my nuvi 750 in Jan/08 and discovered my street was on included on the map. I have lived here for over two years. Before I pay any money (it should be free), I want to know if my street is now included. How do I find out?

| Reply to This Comment

No $65.00 isn't unreasonable at all-I ordered mine from GPS city for $60.00-I have the 650 model and last year I got the free upgrade due to the fact I had bought it just before the maps came out. And what Garmin charges for maps is in line or better than thier competitors.

| Reply to This Comment

$65 is a fair price for map updates. Both TomTom and Magellan charge more. At least Garmin releases map updates every year (Magellan, I'm talking to you...).

If I buy a Garmin after the maps are
released for sale, and if I check the map version and if it says 2008, can I than get free 2009 map software for the device?

| Reply to This Comment

I have the answer!
If you purchased the Nuvi 650 from Costco which likely most did buy it from Costco.
Just return the unit and buy another one and the map update should be free since you just purchased the unit.
Take advantage of Costco membership benefits by getting everything free from these manufacturers.

| Reply to This Comment

Hi GPS4ME,
First of all, I am planning on buying a Garmin nuvi 680 not 650 and second, I don't go to Costco and I don't have their membership card. I am planning on purchasing mine online.

I guess to beat a dead horse... if one buys a unit off Amazon, can we get the 2009 maps for free? Likewise, what about buying one off eBay, new and unregistered presumably...?

| Reply to This Comment

If you purchased your Garmin new after March 1st and have registered with Garmin, and you have City navigator 2008 loaded on it, Garmin will give you the CN2009 map update FREE from my understanding. Pretty clear. Good luck buying used off EBay and expecting free map update. Since you can buy a NEW nuvi for as little as $150, seems like a poor roll-of-the-dice.

@James M,
Many others, such as Mio, make no map guarantee. Some, like TomTom, allow 4 weeks. Six weeks from Garmin is pretty good IMHO. Of course there is always Navigon's "Fresh Maps" policy, which will be tough to match.

| Reply to This Comment

I've recently been shopping for Garmin GPS units on amazon and have noticed that they do not mention the version of the maps that the unit comes with(they used to say). I can't quit figure out if the new nuvi's come with the 2009 maps. Also, does anyone have a link to this free Garmin map upgrade policy? I want to be sure I can update without paying if I buy a new unit.

Thanks!

I purchased and registered a 760 last week 4/10. Then decided to called Garmin Monday AM to asked about qualifications for update to 09 NA Maps. First question he asked was did I already register? Then he said, Okay no problem, he typed a few notes attached to my serial number that no mater when the 09 ships I would qualify for update. He also added that normally if you have purchased 30 days before the ship date (late April, all he said) you would qualify for a free update.

I purchased my Nuvi 760 at the end of February...I'll be very disappointed and will push Amazon to exchange it if Garmin will not give me the 2009 maps for free. I just called Garmin and they told me that they have not set a policy for the 2009 map upgrade yet, so I might be included for a free update, but they won't know for sure until the update is available on their own website. I hope that's soon!

| Reply to This Comment

If you compared the in-vehicle pricing for maps updates, you would be shocked! Mercedes and BMW generally charge about $300+, the most reasonable has been Honda at $150. So $69 or $79 for fresher maps is a great deal folks!

| Reply to This Comment

I just ordered my maps from Amazon. It had free shipping and the maps were $58.99 with no tax. Just a note to anyone ordering from Amazon... The free shipping says it takes up to 5 additional days to ship when compared to the "pay" shipping. I ordered mine this morning with the free shipping and this afternoon it said that it had shipped. So it shipped the SAME DAY! So don't let that free shipping time thing put you off.

| Reply to This Comment

Got mine today took 1 1/2 hrs to load on my 650 using a Dual-Core Pentium 4 pc with 3GB of memory. Last year as I recall those users who had purchased the unit recently got the maps free-I know I did and I'm sure it's the same case now. The only thing was if you were a $$$ customer you got the maps quicker than the guy who got them free.

I just got the free update dvd for 2009 but I cannot open it because it is saying I do not have an internet connection, when I obviously do. What should I do???

| Reply to This Comment

Even though the Garmin map update is a slightly better than competetive price, almost any price is too high. My wife's smart phone can access google maps and route with cutting edge percision. Dash Express took POI's a step up with internet content connectivity but stopped short of applying this AWSOME capability to maps. Why?????

I am a contractor that goes to between 6 and 50 different new houses in a day, many of which are new construction on new roads. I purposely have not bought a GPS unit because even the expensive one's will are out of date by the time they're on the shelf. Basically I'm waiting out the tech jump.

| Reply to This Comment

Perhaps the Navigon Fresh Maps" policy would fit you. Might check it out. Gives you 12 updates over three years for one flat price.

| Reply to This Comment

How many people realize Garmin has to pay NavTeq a license fee for each map use/installation? They can't provide updates for free without losing money. I can't imagine how many hours are spent gathering update data and configuring software. Personally I would like to see Garmin move to a longer update policy like 6-12 months after purchase, or one free update after purchase. Navigon has a great idea with their approach- it gives a user options. But nobody comes close to Garmin in my opinion...

| Reply to This Comment

do you work for Garmin? Do you know how inexpensively they obtain those licenses from NavTech? You are drinknig the coolaid unless you put this comment out as a Garmin employee.

| Reply to This Comment

Listen all you garmin nuvi junkies unless Garmin comes out with shorter distance faster time which they already have they need most use of higways or freeways and least use of highways and freeways.

magellan's mapping is much worse than garmin's mapping however magellan gives you 4 options why can't the mighty garmin do the same. Thanks Lew

| Reply to This Comment

What do those other options do for you? What has been the differnce? I assume not using highways will give you the scenic route?? What has been the difference for you between fastest and most use of highways?

| Reply to This Comment

Hi Warren I use My garmin about 10 to 15 times a day for my Job to find different residental and business addresses and sometimes the Nuvi 660 will take you down back roads with lots of lights to slow your route down considerably.

For example one particular job i had i wanted to stay on the Highway to get home i was 55 miles away it took me off the Highway and onto back roads than back onto the highway i checked This way the milage is shorter but much longer due to the Traffic lights. The highway is about 6 miles longer from this point but much quicker in time but the nuvi is taking me the fastest way because the mileage is 6 miles shorter but the time is way longer if i am in an area i am not famillar with I want to stay on the highway as long as i can than get off and arrive at my destination. but the nuvi no matter what i do faster way or shorter way still takes me off the highway than back on about 10 miles later. This happens quite a bit if you do not use your Nuvi that much you probably will not notice it. The Nuvi gives you Faster Way Or Shorter Way. The Magellan has 4 options They have the same 2 The Garmin has and the 2 I wish Garmin would get most use of Highways or least use of highways. Most use of Highways will keep you on the Highway the whole way until it brings you very close to your destination without traveling any side or back roads unless you want to. Thanks Lew

| Reply to This Comment

Are you also using the Magellan at the same time and done a route comparison. I'm interested in what the actual times turn out to be. Does "most use of highways" result in a faster trip on the Magellan than the nuvi route?

| Reply to This Comment

Hi Warren I much rather use the Nuvi as i do not like the looks of the magellan's map screen. Yes my friend has a Magellan 4250 thats how i found out about this also they have these units in circuit city and you can put a route in there as well. I did both routes 2 times and the faster yet longer way home on the highway is 25min faster in time. The way The nuvi wants me to travel is 6 to 7 miles shorter in distance yet 25 min longer in time because of all the lights and traffic i just want to stay on the highway so even if it is 7 or even 10 miles different driving 65 to 70 mph will make your trip go as you know way faster. Thanks Lew

| Reply to This Comment

This shows up the optimistic algorithm in Garmin.

It probably thinks that you can go faster via the local route (with stoplights) than what is possible in reality. TT is the reverse, it tends to overestimate the time, as if people drive slowly in reality.

Things like IQ routes, with historical traffic times will help a lot here and its just a matter of time before everyone offers their own flavour of this.

The completeness of the highway speed database is what I found most amazing. Every road I traveled today, with the exception of one, from major highways and secondary roads to even residendential roads, had the speed limit posted on the map screen. Even when the speed limit dropped in congested areas, the nuvi reported the correct posted speed immediately. Well worth the $55 I spent.
I see no reason for any nuvi user to skip over this map update. Definitely a major improvement.

I just checked the "My Garmin" website for my registered 660 bought on March 3rd from Amazon, and under map downloads it said "none available." When the new -- hopefully free -- map download is available, will Garmin send me an email, or is it up to me to regularly visit "My Garmin" and look for some kind of announcement?

| Reply to This Comment

Fred,
I think that it is up to you to check regularly for map updates. I don't think that map update will be free to you since you bought your Garmin device before the map update was released. In order to obtain a free map update, you would have to buy your Garmin device after the map update is released and if your device has the 2008 maps.

| Reply to This Comment

After March 1st, free update. Purchased before March 1st, no free update.

To Warren: And you know this how? When I called Garmin about 3 days ago and asked if I would be eligable for a free map update, he said that he didn't know since the map update was not out yet. Also to Warren: Do you know when the Garmin nuvi 800 series will be out. I know that it will be out in the 2nd quarter but I need a more specific date, like which month. Some say at the end of August, like the 25th. That doesn't make sense since August is during the 3rd quarter.

A bit of research mostly. I talk to quite a lot of people with pretty good knowledge of what's going on in the satnav market. As for ship date on the 800's, I suspect within 30 days.

I got the 2009 update from Garmin last night because I was so terribly dissatisfied with the 2008 update that I paid $85 for. I tried to install it once, but had problems, I think I might have unintentionally tried to use the code from the 2008 update, they look almost exactly the same. After installation (which took 1 hour and 23 minutes) it said that the maps were locked and unavailable. I reinstalled it (which took another hour and 7 minutes) being sure to use the code from the 2009 update and it works now. In addition to just having the U.S. and Canada on this update, I noticed that there were two other options, one for "East" and one for "West". I am not sure what they contain as I didn't look at them because I live in Oklahoma City. They still don't have my street on it which has been there since 1957. If this update doesn't navigate better than the 2008 one did, we'll probably just have to go with a different brand for our next unit.

I contacted customer service yesterday about the possibility of a free upgrade, since I just bought my Nuvi 680 in April 2008. They said to look on mygarmin account on 5/1/08 and there would be a link for a free download. So, if you recently bought a Garmin, go to www.garmin.com, click on mygarmin, then there's a link for map updates. You may be eligible for a free map upgrade.

Hey, just looked at my Gamin account and the update is now out there. You can get it by disk $10 s/h or download it. It's 7 gig so it will take a couple hrs to download. They just put it out there 90 min ago. NOTE: It will tell you that you are eligible for a free update.

I just logged into my Garmin account, and the free 2009 map update is available. I registered on 4/1, so at least a 1-month grace is offered. My download is only 2.04 gig, the file name is rmu_cnnant2009.exe. Maybe different updates are available for different GPS units that offer different map coverage. I have a Nuvi 260. My download will be done in a few minutes, and I'll install it right away.

I got mine early because I complained at the right time about the 2008 update and paying for incomplete work. They told me that most people wouldn't have it yet and that if I had any problems to let them know so they can make sure the production model worked properly before release to the public. I used it for a couple of hundred miles today and noticed no difference from the 2008 update, but I didn't go to any of the updated cities.

You need an additional 37 MB on your Garmin GPS for the application to conintue." I just go the 200W as a gift and haven't added anything to it. How do I free up space to make the update fit? Any help is appreciated

I bought a nuvi 660 from amazon on april 11th and they will not let me upgrade for free. It says i have to purchase update in my garmin.com account (yes, i only have 1 garmin and registered it online within a week of purchase). I spoke with 2 supervisors and they stated they would cut me a deal for $30. They said no nuvi 660's were eligible for the update. I will not pay GArmin anything to update. It will be returned and i vow to never to purchase another garmin product again.

People w/ ethics/morals need not read any further. This only work one time however since once registered, you won't be able to use this method next year.

Garmin has absolutely no way of knowing when you bought your system if you have haven't registered your GPS unit. So if you want the update, go to Garmin's website and register it and put any date after March 1st and then it'll let you download the update for free. Now, obviously if you have a GPS w/ any maps older than 2008, they'll probably know you're lying but if you have 2008 maps, you're good to go. Flame away people

I have a Nuvi 750 that was bought in February. I understand that it does not qualify for the free update. I'm planning to buy a Nuvi 350 later this month as a gift.

If I download the update for the 350, will I be able to use it on the 750 instead (NOT BOTH)? Or is the download somehow linked to a specific unit?

I just registered today my nuvi 650. what steps do i need to take to get the free update. thanks

| Reply to This Comment

Just finished the upgrade to my nuvi 250. It took 22 hours to download the 2.04GB over a 256k connection and another hour to install in the nuvi. I don't see any changes here in Ontario but at least it was free. By the way, I registered my nuvi on March 13, 2008.

If you buy a 300 series, you may not receive a free update if it comes with 2008 maps (almost guaranteed). The 300's are now considered an "end-of life" product, apparently soon to be retired from the Garmin lineup.

Thanks for the reply, Warren. A co-worker bought a 360 on April 11 and registered it on the 15. He downloaded the free update this morning.

I may order the update DVD at $10 and see if it will install on the 750.

Bought my 660 from Amazon.com on April 22 and it came with 2008 maps. MyGarmin today makes no mention of any free upgrade to 2009. It only says I can purchase by download or buy the disk. Why are 660's not eligible for free upgrade?

| Reply to This Comment

Update: Talked to Garmin and they confirm 660's are currently already discounted, therefore, not eligible, but they are willing to make a "deal" for a DVD for total of $37.91, including S&H.

just talked to garmin and was told my 650 did not qualify even thou i just registered it today.

Installed the new update. I live in Louisville, KY and there are a lot of updates around the city and in southern Indiana. I sent Navtech a couple of updated maps 3 months ago and the updates I provided showed up on this map update. It could have already been part of the update, but maybe I could have contributed.....anyway has anyone run into this problem before....I have a nuvi 200 W when I plug in the car adapter the garmin thinks Im plugging it into a usb and it won't let me view the map as it's charging. This has only taken place after I made the update and it allowed me before then to view the map as it was plugged into the charger. Any suggestions?

| Reply to This Comment

The issue is sometimes due to insufficient power flowing to the nuvi, tricking it into "usb charge" mode. Check your car battery and make sure it's up to snuff. Also, you aren't using any power splitter are you?

Has any Nuvi 680 owner updated to 2009? The 680 does not come with Canada installed. If Canada is included with the update I will spring for the $$$, otherwise the South Florida maps have worked just fine & seem to be up to date. Love this website!

I purchased a C550 on the 18th of April and registered it on the same day. I just checked my acct and i am eligible for the 2009 map update for free with the down load or $10.00 for a disk for postage. I am down loading it right now. I gave it to my daughter last week and just purchased a Nuvi 650. It looks like it is not eligible for the free upgrade, So I think that I will install it on my 650 when it arrives in the mail on Monday or Tuesday. It looks like all I have to do is enter the key when I start to install the upgrade. After I install the upgrade I will register it online with Garmin. I hope that they don't uninstall it on me when they check what is in it.

| Reply to This Comment

Decided to install the update on my daughters C550. The down load took around one and a half hours with my high speed connection. and another hour and a half to install on to the GPS. Didn't have any problems with the upgrade, Just followed the on screen instructions and it went smoothly. It kept all of her favorites places and settings.

Scott, I'm in the same boat with the 200W Nuvi saying "You need an additional 39MB of space, etc" It says I need 39MB of space on my Nuvi. I can delete the foreign languages, etc that I don't need, but I can't see how I should have to do that considering it's a Garmin update. Please help anyone!

i downloaded the 2009 map update this weekend to my nuvi 360. went fine. took about 4 hrs though. so give yourself plenty of time.

I called garmin and they said that you will get it free if you first satellite acquisition is within 60 days of map update release. doesn't matter when you bought it.

also, I have noticed route changes since doing the download ? the route changes don't seem to be related to new roads. I know this because I have lived in dallas for 8 years and know the routes that are changed only involve old roads . my nuvi 360 now shows more preference for smaller roads and shorter distance over longer distance and more interstates since the update.

I'm sure there was a change to the route algorithm snuck into this map update. unfortunately, most the new routes its giving me are shorter but take longer to drive .

what the heck garmin?

| Reply to This Comment

since the map update the route from dallas to dayton is now 9 miles longer and involves non interstate roads for no good reason.

nuvi 360 used to route me I-30 , I-40 all the way to I-65 to I-71 to I-75 to dayton . the recommended and fastest route.

now takes I-30 to I-40 but cuts up north to I-55 in memphis to hwy 51? to I-24 to I-65 to I-71 to I-75 .

9 miles longer and involves hwy when there is a parallel interstate available.

check it for yourself.

I have a question.... I downloaded the 2009 map update from Garmin. When I run it is asking for a Product Key. Where the heck do I get that?

I downloaded the 2009 maps on 5/1 and wrote down the product key that was on the download page. However, when I entered it during installation it said that the key has already been assigned to different Garmin GPS. I emailed support immediately on 5/1 and just got a response this morning on 5/5. Apparently, in my support email I just mentioned that I downloaded the “new maps” not “City Navigator® North America NT 2009 Map Update”. I would have thought that they could have looked up this information based on my Nuvi’s serial number and MyGarmin account but I guess not. Now I have to wait even longer to get a response. I don't know if any of this will be helpful to some of you but that's my story.

dikfor ,

I downloaded it thursday and just wrote it down from the download page.

If you didnt see it there , then you can go to garmin.com , then click on my garmin link then click on your orders.

garmin keeps it there for 90 days or until you use it.

good luck !

ps.

you have to download to you computer first , then you transfer it to the gps.

about 2 hrs for each download!

I do not want to comment on Garming pricing policy since everybody has its reasons why they charge this and that. As long as people are willing to pay asking price, price will stay as is.

NA 2009 update does not bring much. If you live in a new developed area you might see the difference otherwise 2008 version is just as good. I am using 2009 for a month or so and there is no differences in routing speed, interface or whatever. The only difference observable on Legend HCx is lighter map background; so instead of distinctive yellow now it is creamy yellow. In the lover left corner on the GPSr screen where you can see map resolution, background stayed the ‘old’ yellow so it easy to see ‘yellow’ differences. I am not interested in POI since they could change daily and Nobody can track all those changes unless there is a real-time database you can access as businesses open/close.

I am waiting for 2009 NON NT update since current – NT still has a lag on e-trex and similar devices. Cannot comment Nuvi performance since I do not have it.

And since I am in position to test and use Every Garmin’s map for free, I will continue to use it. Is it worth $65? If you already have 2008 version – NO. If you are upgrading from few years old map – Yes.

This is an update to my earlier post. I still haven't heard back from support but I did find a different product key on MyGarmin that seems to be working. I wish I would have gotten the correct key in the first place but hey it works. For anyone else having this issue it's MyGarmin-> MyMaps -> Map Downloads.

Now I just need to select the region I would like to install. Canada + Border States, Lower 48, East, West. I'm leaning towards lower 48 even though I live 12 miles from the Canadian border. Does anyone know if I'll loose Canada completely or if Canada will just not be updated.

I live in the Chicago Metro Area.
I installed the 2009 map updates in my NUVI 760 about 2 weeks ago and here is what I have noticed in the past 2 weeks:
All the major roads post the speed limit not just highways. There are many new POI's. The I355 extension from I-55 to I80 is now available. The I355 extension for those who live in the area is worth the $60.00. I will post more updates as soon as I spend more time with the 2009 updates.

Scott and Shabby, I also received the message "There is not enough space on your Garmin" when trying to update my Nuvi 200W with the 2009 map update. Like Scott, it says I need an additional 37MB. I sent an email to Garmin support since I couldn't find anything when I searched their support page. We'll see how long it takes for them to respond. Please post additional information if you resolve this or if anyone has any information to assist. Thanks!

For the Error message:
"There is not enough free space on your Garmin GPS. You need an additional 37 MB on your Garmin GPS for the application to conintue."

I called tech support and they said You can remove the Voices that you dont need.

Plug in your unit. (I have the Nuvi 200)
Go to the Garmin folder, Go to the Voice Folder. Delete Voices that you dont Use. (I deleted all voices except for English.)

If more room is needed, go in to Text folder and delete all except for your language you use.

Doing this will clear around 49mb of space.

Thanks for the notes on deleting the Voice and Text folders when you get the 'not enough space' message. One more hint for Mac users: Make sure you tell Spotlight to ignore the GARMIN device. I found a bunch of indexing stuff placed on the GPS drive that disappeared when I turned that off. The update appears to be running smoothly now.

Can I trick Garmin by registering my 650 as 660 and will the 2009 update still work?

Stop complaining, you bought the Nuvi 650 because you were being cheap. Now you want a free map update. This is not fair to those that bought a newer gps like the Nuvi 750, 760, or 5000. Get A Life!!!!!!!!!!!

Jeff, if you purchased after March 1st without the latest map update, you don't have to "fool" anyone. Garmin will give you the update. Did you even check with them?

Crisis averted.=D My Nuvi 650 is covered for the free 2009 map update after I registered on My Garmin yesterday. (their site has been down for maintenance for the past few weeks) This was easier than I thought after reading some of the stories on the forums about the trouble they went through to get the free update. (many said they weren't covered even though they purchased it after March 1. Eg. the Nuvi 650 is a discontinued model and only comes with the 2008 maps, so you have to pay for the 2009 maps)

Thanks for your helpful post David. /sarcasm

I have a new Garmin nuvi 660, and when I try to install the downloaded version of the 2009 Map update, I get the message "There is not enough free disk space on your computer's C Drive. The Application needs 3203 MB of free disk space to continue with the installation" - which is interesting to me since I don't have a C drive on my system. My Garmin is my W drive and my desktop is the I drive. I have moved as much as I possibly can off the Garmin and I keep getting the same error. Any ideas ?

The map first writes to your C:/ drive by default, then to the nuvi from there once the download is complete.

To all those that have the Nuvi 600's,700's, and 5000 GPS's you need to push Garmin to update it's softare on these devices to that of the StreetPolit 7500. The StreetPolit 7500 has so many customizing options that is needed in the Nuvi products. Just go on to Garmin's website (www.garmin.com) and look up the StreetPolit 7500's manual. After viewing it you are going to wish that those options were in the Nuvi GPS's. Write, call, or e-mail Garmin and demand these customizing options in the Nuvi products. You will be glad you did!

I recently looked at the StreePolit 7500 owner’s manual and wonder way the customizing options in this unit is not in the Garmin Nuvi 5000. Things like changing the Speech Rate, and the option to change the color of the route path are nice things that would take the Nuvi 5000 to the next level. Everything that you can do in the StreetPolit 7500 you should be able to do in the Nuvi 5000. Please help and suggest this in an up and coming update. Thank you"!

T. Han,
I have the Garmin Nuvi 5000 with the 2009 Map update. All of the new features that are in the Nuvi 700’s, 800, 5000 you will NOT see. What you will see in the map update are updated streets, highways, and POI’s. THAT IS IT!!!!

Today I was testing the routing in my Nuvi 5000 and then comparing the routes to that of Mapquest. I have quickly learned that Garmin’s directions are much better than Mapquest. Sometimes they are both the same, but most of the time Garmin’s directions are slightly more logical. Give it a test in your area and see what you find
I have the Garmin Nuvi 5000 with the 2009 Maps.
I live in the Buffalo, New York area.
The POI’s are massive here!!!

Dave and/or Ace,
I'm trying to get a bit more info on the 5000 "Prompted Detour". It's apparently a bit different than the traditional "get me off this road" function common to the rest of the nuvi line. A poster in another forum indicated he could avoid an entire area with the 500. The manual is a bit "understated" so could either of you elaborate?

| Reply to This Comment

Warren Merrill,

The Nuvi 5000 is a little bit different (or should I say better) than the Nuvi 660,680, 750,760, and 800’s when it comes to the “detour” functions. Once you perform all the recent system updates on the Nuvi 5000 for FREE, its detour functions changes for the better. So do not go into Best Buy and check it out for yourself, because the GPS on display will not have the most recent updates. Let me explain:
1. With the Nuvi 5000 you can set it to temporary avoid a certain street or neighborhood. Yes that is right, you can tell the Nuvi 5000 to stay clear of that bad neighborhood or that street that is always busy whenever it calculates its routes. You can’t do this with the Nuvi 760.
2. When you have traffic receiver connected to the Nuvi 5000 the “prompted detour” function comes into play. If there are any traffic problems on your route, the Nuvi 5000 will inform you of these problems and ask you do you want to avoid them. This feature should be available on the Nuvi 760.
3. This last feature is not on the Nuvi 600’s, 700’s. or 800’s. It is only on the Nuvi 5000 and StreetPilot 7200 and 7500 (I guess this is what you get when you pay more)-This feature is the extended detour functions.
When you are navigating and you hit the detour button on the Nuvi 5000 you get a list of choices.
A.) Detour by ½ mile
B.) Detour by 2 miles
C.) Detour by 5 miles
D.) Or exclude certain roads in the route
A tech. support guy for Garmin said that they will not put these features in the 750 and 760 because those GPS’s cost less then the Nuvi 5000, StreetPilot 7200, and 7500. The Nuvi 800’s specializes in voice recognition, which is its specialty, but you will not find that feature in that one also.

I had a choice to either buy the Nuvi 760 or the Nuvi 5000 and I picked the Nuvi 5000. It has a much better screen (5.2 inch, brighter, ect.). If you ask me the Nuvi 5000 is a much better GPS than the Nuvi 750 or 760. Voice recognition on the Nuvi 800’s is nice but it is not worth the asking price!

| Reply to This Comment

I have the Nuvi 5000 and the above post about the detour functions are incorrect. The detour functions in the Nuvi 5000 are the same as the Nuvi 760.

Fletch:

You stated in your Installation Review: "If you purchased a qualified Garmin GPS recently (or even if you purchased it a long time ago but never registered it on Garmin's website), Garmin will give you the update for free."

How long is long?

I recently purchased my Nuvi 680. The new update doesn't cover some of the recent (last 2 years) major road openings locally, so I've hoping they'll be on for 2010.

If I don't register the 680, will they allow an up-grade to the 2010 maps when they come available next year?

Thanks in Advance.

| Reply to This Comment

Gordog,

The answer to your question is no! You got to keep in mind that the Nuvi 680 is now discontinued and even though you did not register it, Garmin knows when this product was last manufacture.

| Reply to This Comment

The Nuvi 760 is the best. It has all the features that the even more expensive Nuvi's have. The only thing that might be better is Nuvi 880 with the voice command.

| Reply to This Comment

GorDog, Garmin is in the process, if they have not done so already, of changing their site to read the first use date of your device rather than the registration date. I suggestt if you're due a map to do so now. What you mentioned sometimes worked in the past, but won't likely sneak thru now.

It always amazes me that everyone wants something for nothing. The company has a responsibility to make a profit, and the cost of mapping has to be passed on to the consumer. People want free maps, but they want inexpensive units as well.

Map updates are cheap, compared to a decent "paper map". If you price a good almanac, you'd be surprised how cheap a map update is.

| Reply to This Comment

No John they want a updated map based on when they purchased the unit. What sense does it make to buy a brand new gps with 2007 maps on it when the 2009 maps are out.

You really want people to drop coin on a new product then pay for updates right out of the gate. No sir.

Garmin is only worried about Garmin. The old navigation database I have in my NUVI 750 is a piece of junk. The things you want to know on a trip aren't there. Garmin gets everyone else to do their job for them then charges you through the nose. I'm talking about the custom POI's.

On a trip I would like to know how far to the next rest area (am I the only one in the world that has to pee on the road?)Rest areas are not in the data base. (STUPID!) I'm going from Orlando to Nashville. I program my destination and get the mileage to it. Maybe I would like to eat sometime on the 12hr trip. Wouldn't it be nice to see what time you are going to be going by Valdasta, Macon, Atlanta. I know Garmin can do this stuff because I flown airplanes with their equipment for years.

Their software is a pittiful excuse for GPS software. Mine is going on Ebay unless I find they have done drastically better in the 2009 update. So far I have seen nothing to suggest they have. Stupid, stupid, stupid

| Reply to This Comment

agreed. Main reason for using GPS versus map is that you expect that the updates would be updated automatically and for FREE. I bought a GPS unit - it's up to the manufacturer to make sure that it gets the right information/maps to its customers.

If you create a product whose sole purpose is to route people from point a to point b then you owe it to your customers to make sure that product continues to work for more than 1 year. I didn't buy a disposable GPS, but apparently that's what Garmin thinks these are. Cheaper than a paper map? Perhaps, but that's not the point. I spent $300 and I expect the thing to point me to the right location for years to come. If Garmin can't do that for $300 then they need to be realistic to their customers and charge $350 or $400. The GPS is a brick if the maps are shit and even in a major metropolitan area these maps aren't great. Home Depot just routed me to a Honda dealership the other day. No Home Depot for 20 blocks, never has been, never will be. Fantastic stuff. Good to know if I report it they'll add it to the updates and then charge me for that update. Great respect for the customer.

Yep, it's a shame Garmin doesn't do their own mapping and instead buys the map from Navteq, who also sells to Magellan, and Google, and Mapquest and a few thousand other resellers and end-users. If a highway is wrong on your Garmin, it will be wrong on every other device and website using Navteq maps.

Not sure what you're complaining about Tim. Your gps probably will work for years.

One way around the map updates is to go to MapQuest and download the information directly into your garmin. And their is always a way of cracking the code so that when you buy the map update you can use it on all of your gps units.

So you're advocating theft with your code-cracking comment? Slippery slope when you start making excuses for the level of dishonesty and trying to justify the theft of property.

By the way, to correct your post, Mapquest sends no mapping detail to your nuvi. If the road is missing on your map, it's still missing after sending Mapquest routing instructions. All Mapquest is actually sending to your nuvi is sets of coordinates, being used as waypoints. Where mapquest holds the advantage over Google is that it will send the route exactly as you built it. Google on the other hand will send waypoints for you nuvi to construct a route to. Of course it doesn't matter at all if your nuvi doesn't support multi-point routing. In that case there is little difference in the two.

1) I have a nuvi 750 with multipoint routing. I upgraded to 2009 and now the multipoint routing is now all messed up. Won't let you save new routes, scrambled prior saved waypoints, etc. What a mess.

2) If you buy the software, definitely get it from Amazon ($54.99, plus sometimes free shipping) or at least someplace other than Garmin ($69 plus shipping) and save some $$$.

Kathryn, I didn't have those issues with my routes, other than one did change due to a new tollroad that appeared in the map.
How many routes do you have active? You do know the limit is 10? You can of course have many more than that loaded to your nuvi, but only 10 imported and active at one time.

After reading several comments about the price of the upgrade and how it is only good for one unit, I am going to give a suggestion. **REMAINDER OF COMMENT DELETED BY MODERATOR**

Tron, why would you suggest users steal the maps? Since the gps costs money as well, I guess it's OK to shoplift it too? What level of stealing is OK with you?

| Reply to This Comment

Tron, I suppose theft of property is OK, as long as it's not yours, correct?

Fletch, the comment by Tron needs to be dumped.

Sorry Fella, but when I bought my two Garmin units I was told that I could buy one map update and install on both units. Garmin had permitted me to do this with the 2008 map and I was not aware that they had stopped this practice. Don't be so cynical about those of us who try to economize while not violating any agreements.

Yes, I too was told when I brought the Garmin that I would be able to update it but they didn't say it was going to cost anything. What a rip off.

When I bought two (2) Garmin units, 1 Nuvi 200 and 1 Nuvi 200W,
I was told at Radio Shack that both units are upgradable. The sales person said that one upgrade disk will work on both units.
So I bought both units and as everyone knows by now that what I was told is incorrect. The sales person no longer is an employee at Radio Shack and the manager has no liability for what his FORMER employee's remarks. Garmin is a very greedy and very aggressive company as to not to put this in very bold print on their units. 1 UPGADE ONLY PER 1 GPS UNIT. Boy, this took alot of engineering education to think of this notice of fair trade. I am glad I only registered 1 unit, because I don't get the warning about the upgrade that must be made on the unregistered unit. Yes, Garmin will take your money now,
and every year there after as long as you own their GPS unit.

There are over 25 million NA POI's. Garmin uses about 6 million of them. TomTom 930 uses about 5 million, with some models quite a few million less. Some Navigon's have only 1.5 million. Not every poi that's available will be in any of the major manufacturer's databases, so choices are made on which ones to include so that a good mix of restaurants, hotels, small neighborhood stores, large box stores, etc. are included. If you're out of town looking for a Circuit City, or a seafood restaurant, you're almost certain to find one nearby. It may not be the closest one as not all are included. But you will likely find one. I seriously doubt that a courteous call to Garmin resulted in them hanging up on you.

Has anyone had trouble with their pc after downloading the 2009 version of Garmin maps?? My pc had no end of frozen screen problems, unable to access zone alarm, etc. until I deleated the whole Garmin file, then things were back to normal.

For what it's worth, Ive owned a Nuvi 350 since late 2006. I paid too much for Garmin's first map update thinking it may solve some of the many problems I was having with inaccurate navigation. It didn't.

I'm concerned about the inaccuracies in mapping that are not corrected by the updates. Some of the ones I've noticed have been the way they are for years.

The reviews I'm reading about the 2009 update seem to echo my sentiments about last year's update. Overall, I would suggest people just save their money, and go with the maps you've got.

If you're really lost, the GPS will put you in the right neighborhood, but you may take some interesting side trips first!

The voice on the Nuvi 350 that I'm using is "Jack". I've given Jack a last name.

I also agree I paid over 500.00 for my nuvi 360 and updated it 2 times at 60.00 per update Garmin suxt they are a bunch of thieves I sureley will NEVER BUY A GARMIN product! They would charge you for breathing if they could..

In Jan 2007 I contacted MS to inquire if and when they will be adding my street to their database. I was advised that Navteq was responsible for updating the database. I then contacted Navteq and they indicated they would check on the address and email me when the street was added. In Jan 2008 I received an email from Navteq indicating that the street was valid (amazing since I have a house on this street for seven years) and that the database had been added.

I had a Garmin and wanted to get the update so I figured I would wait until later in the year to purchase the update. Figuring that the 2009 update would be one based on a database closer to 2009 than to 2007. To my surprise (of course I hadn't been checking this thread) the Garmin 2009 update was created prior to Jan 2008.

Garmin suggests you update your maps regularly. However, they only provide one update a year. I guess things only change yearly at Garmin.

Being disappointed I sent a letter to Garmin but after two weeks I haven't received any response.

Yearly updates is good compared to most other GPS brands. If you think Garmin is slow, try owning an LG or Magellan GPS - you're lucky to get an update every 3 or 4 years with those brands. TomTom also only releases official map updates yearly.

Can someone tell me what the steps to update a Nuvi 270 are?

If I have the Map CD, where do I get the cable to plug it in? Is it a USB cable? I keep seeing references to "unlock codes" so what are they?

Thanks,

John

Why is a map released in April 2008 called a 2009 update? My wife just got me the 2009 CD for Christmas. New roads that were opened in January/February 2008 are not on this new CD. Huh??!? I realize updates take time but if you're going to call the update "2009", a road that was opened in early 2008 should be on there.

The CD's should have some statement like "Includes updates from MM/DD/YYY and earlier."

I ordered the 2009 update for my streetpilot c550 ... it is on my PC and it tries to "unzip" but I never get a request for an unlock code. I'll have a charge coming on my Visa bill and haven't been able to figure out how to get the update onto my Garmin! Wish I had never purchased it since I don't know how I'll be able to use it ...

Personally I found Garmin Lifetime Maps, at only $92 from Amazon for every quarterly map update till my device dies, quite a bargain. Even if I only use it for two years, that's just $11 per map. Pretty reasonable IMHO.

If anyone is interested, the Greensboro, NC maps have not been updated with this release. Drawbridge Pkwy (this road is at least 5 years old) is still not on the 2009 map release. Neither is the new section of 840 on the west side of Greensboro. Very irritating.

this is my 2nd Garmin street pilot c340. the touch pad wore out on the first one in the first yr I owned it. I enter about 10 addresses each day ,6 days a week....so I guess that is why it wore out. It was cheeper to buy another one than to have it repaired. I have been using the 2nd c340 for almost 2 yrs now with no problems. My question is should I purchase the updates or should I just buy a new Garmin? If I buy new one, which model should I get? Any info would be helpful. I use the gps locally in south florida and there are alot of new subdivisions that are still not on the gps.
