Zoombak's Advanced GPS Car & Family Locator

Zoombak's Advanced GPS Car & Family Locator is a relatively low-cost Assisted GPS (A-GPS) tracking solution designed to help you locate your car, and your loved ones in it, and help bring them home safely. The system, which retails for $249, plus a $15/month service fee, can be carried as a portable tracking device or permanently installed in a vehicle. The company also sells a pet-friendly version for $199, which is identical except that it includes a dog collar instead of a vehicle installation kit.

I tested the Zoombak Car & Family Locator and found out how the system competes with other tracking and locator solutions out there. Is Zoombak the low-cost, easy to use tracking solution you've been searching for? Read on.

My daughter and I bought the zoombak personal tracker just for them to take on vacation, so we could keep track of her 6 year old daughter while at Disney World... This tracker is terrible at first we couldn't even locate them in Florida at all. After 24 hours of trying to locate them I finally put in their zip code at where they were staying and still couldn't pick them up. The next day I finally located them at the zip code I put in, but they had not been there for about 10 hours. I called the customer service department which was no help. They could not locate them either, and asked for the zip code of where they were suppose to be when I told them I didn't know it, they told me that there was nothing that they could do if the device was not picking up a signal.. " so if someone was to grab my grandaughter they would not be able to help us locate her" again I was told if it's not getting a signal there was nothing they could do until it git a signal..
I am very unhappy with this device. How can it locate anything if you need to keep putting in a zip code? You would not know this information whether it was your car, dog or child.
For $ 150.00 plus a monthly fee this is a ripoff

Thank you for taking the time to post this information. I was going to purchase this product, after reading your review and several others on the web I am moving on to something else!

BEWARE
Whatever you do. DO NOT buy a Zoombak. They sign you on for a monthly subscription but in their fine print there is an early termination fee for cancelling before 1 year

After a week of using the Zoombak, I can say it is not ready for prime-time yet. I live in an area with very good coverage according to the coverage map. There is a delay of up to 30 minutes in accuracy of tracking, and only a 50/50 chance that it is even able to be tracked.

As I have paid a year in advance for the service, I can only hope for improvements at this point. But if you are in need of accurately tracking something or someone, this device is not for you...yet.

Not Ready for the prime time is a understatement, not ready at all is the right answer. I have spent most of the morning attempting to track my locator, with no success. The unable to locate message is not what I thought i was paying for.

mine is not working either, oh well.

I have this locater and it works great. No problems. You have to make sure you place it in a location that it can recive a signal. I locate several times a day. The first locate you my have to do it twice. It wont work in buildings. Test it in differnt location in the car or what every your putting it in.

I purchased this device 11 days ago and still am unable to get this locator to work. I have been with their Tech Support (in Costa Rica) for the past 11 days and they don't have the authority to make a decision and exchange the defective device. Zoombak Engineers are located in Pennsylvania and all they do is give lip service and don't correct the issue. Their customer service leaves a lot to be desired....extremely poor service. What they advertise is great but what you get is not worth the time, money and effort you put into this product with their Tech Support. I do not recommend this product to anyone.

I purchased the system for my dog. The charge lasts a very short time and requires a charge. If you loose your dog while he is not waering the collar or for any reason want to cancel the service,IT CAN NOT BE REACTIVATED. I WAS TOLD TO THROW IT AWAY

Agreed, this product is for the most part; worthless and or unreliable! I have had this unit for about 8 mo, and has worked for two. I worked with a person for a couple of months who seemed interested in helping me at first, but it turned out to be a smoke screen. If you have this device for more than 3mo, even if they are helping you to resolve a problem that can’t be resolved, you won't be able to return it, and will be stuck with a useless piece of $150 plastic like I am. Out-sourced Customer support tells me that I will have to wait indefinitely for a resolution, which is complete non-sense. Being that this is the fourth device they have sent me, I seriously doubt that they will resolve this no location problem or return any of my investment. My advise is to “BEWARE of this company” (ZOOMBAK), before you lose your money and time dealing with local employees who lie and out-sourced employees who really don't care either way.

I wish I read these comments before I bought this paper weight. Mine only worked one time when I had my mother-in-law stand in the middle of my street (avoiding standing under trees) on a sunny day. What a waste of money!

Tried Zoombak for 4 days and returned it. My wife has Alzheimer's and I needed Text as to her location when she walks. Received a total of 2 text messages. The waypoint zones are limited to 100 yards circles min. When I called customer service, they indicated texts are only sent out every 15 min. My question was "do you know how far someone can walk in min"? I use GPS in my car, as stated previously, very far from prime time. Although a locate request on line was accurate. If you buy, have a computer in front of you constantly. Better yet, don't buy.

Just a note:

According to Zoombak, once activated account must be active and billed for one year, regardless of plan chossen.

I just closed my account, and now I am informed that it can never be re-activiated. That does not make much sense, they stated it was a "SIM" issue, but I would think that like a cell phone, that transponder could be tied to a provider in the future. You would think it would be like setting a "New Account".

Basically this policy makes Zoombak a "one time use" product.

BEWARE: Zoombak is run by nothing but selfish, insensitive, thieves. I have been waiting since AUGUST 09 for a refund on charges that they ILLEGALLY removed from my account AFTER I had closed my zoombak account. They have been promising me a refund since AUGUST, still have no refund, and on top of that they continued to charge me monthly, overdrawing my back account, to the sum of $763.97 in over draft charges, and bank fees. I have given them ALL the information and spoken to their manager, Darren Carson, over 20 times, and still they do not care. I am a mother of 3 kids, who because of this, did not get a christmas, I am disabled and make enough money to pay my rent, and still, they have not helped fix THEIR mistake. I have contacted the BBB and am in the process of filing a lawsuit for unauthorized charges and fraud against my account. This company should be ashamed of the way they have treated me, and my kids. If there is anyone higher than Mr. Darren Carson, i highly recommend you reassess your companys morals and check out the information I have sent to him over the past 6 months...Hey darren, still waiting on the "refund" you promised me back in august, september, october, november, december and january! Hows that coming along?

With all the bad reviews, I am really surprised to see the Zoombak as a recommended item in Oprah's O magazine (Feb.2010 issue).

The Zoombak device is not, I repeat not, a good device for the continual tracking of anything. That is just the device. The customer service and their billing is just short of being theives. I bought a years worth of service, which I only used maybe 10 times. Canceled my service and then received a letter saying they were sending my account to collections. Fortunetly I had cancel my credit card or they would have gotton money from me now they are only trying to ruin my credit. Good luck.

I'm glad I didn't read any of these comments before I bought my Zoombak. Mine has done everything it is suppose to do. It has worked perfectly from day one. I am very happy with it and would buy another if needed. I do not work for Zoombak or have anything to do with them other than buying and using their product. It cost 99.95 and I got a free car kit for a one year service plan. I'm very pleased with my Zoombak and couldn't ask for it to work any better. Maybe others can't work their DVD player either.

Funny how you seem to be the only one to have any success with this piece of garbage and for you to have to feel the need to say you don't work for them etc...yeah, you probably do. Beware of this awful company and customer service!

Purchased the Zoombak as an easy way to make sure of where the family car was at all times. This piece of garbage couldn't even get reception from inside the vehicle. When placed on the hood, it worked like a champ, but that just isn't a feasible place to keep it. Because of it's lack of performance, it was returned to the store, however, the company continued to charge me for the service I was no longer receiving. When I called to cancel, BOOM!, hit with $100 charge to cancel a product that never did what it promised to do. The best was their customer service. I was made promise after promise until I called the supervisor out on the carpet, to which he responded that he never said any of those things and referred me back to the store. All in all, a circus act where I was probably talking to the guy that sits next to the original guy that answered the phone. Product and company are a joke... I'll never make that mistake again.

Do NOT buy!!!!! Bought this for my safety, as a way for my husband to locate me, and it can't even find itself! Spent 3 hours with customer service only to be told to leave it outside in clear view of the sky for the next 24-48 hours, so maybe by then they can find it. When I asked her what to do if it rained or the battery ran down, she told me to plug it in. Run fast, run far from this company.

I purchased the Zoombak a little over a month ago, For the money, I think it works great. I would recommend it. There have only been a couple of time that a location could not be fixed at a particular moment, but within a couple of minutes, and a retry - it located. You can also put this under a seat, in a glove box, in the trunk, in the console....anywhere and it will work. It will not pinpoint the exact loaction but it will come within 25 feet.

Bought a year subscription in advance and never used the unit at all. After completing the prepaid year subscription, they will automatically start billing you monthly without prior notice. The only way to cancel is to call them, at which time they will offer you a half price deal. They will refuse to cancel any monthly billing charges they have sent. You basically have to buy your way out. Beware!

Wow! I don't think I've ever seen a product bad-mouthed so badly by it's consumers. I was thinking of purchasing one but clearly it would be a bad idea. My blood was boiling just reading your comments and I'm not going to subject myself to this non-sense. I'm sorry for all of you but also grateful for sving me from the irritation. Hope this makes you feel better!

Whoa, I'm not going near this product. I had zeroed in on the Zoombak for tracking my dog, but decided to spend another day looking for reviews. Thanks everyone, for setting the record straight on this product. It's also interesting, how the google search results for "zoombak gps dog collar review" are loaded with spam in the form of advertising websites purporting to review this product. Domain names like "whatsthebestgpscollar.com" give away the ruse, but they dominate the first several pages of google results. The reviews themselves are obviously advertising copy, with pros and cons that are laughable "con - not suitable for tracking your pet indoors".

I'm very disappointed that there doesn't seem to be a GPS tracking solution for my dog short of the bulky hunting collars, which do not have sufficient battery life for 24/7 monitoring. Very strange, since cell phones can track location no problem, without bulky antennas or batteries. Maybe I need to get my dog a cell phone plan? You hear that, cell phone companies? There millions of dog owners, all of whom have cell phones, and most of whom would be willing to pay another 10-15 bucks a month to be able to track their beloved pets. Pull your heads out of your arses and exploit this market!

Used the tracker until my 1 year agreement was over. I called and canceled the service on the 366th day. They assured me I wouldn't be billed again BUT they did!!! The next month they tried to bill my credit card. Before canceling the service, changed my default billing credit card number to a prepaid one that had a 5 dollar balance. I had a feeling Zoombad... I mean Zoombak would attempt to bill me again so I made sure that wouldn't happen. BEWARE! If you cancel your service make sure they don't bill your credit card again. These people are crooks!

DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I have succesfully used this product ONCE in 8 months and am still stuck paying for it. I could go out in a supposedly covered area hold the thing above my head and search it from my smart phone with no luck.

WORST PURCHASE I have ever made and WORST customer service I've ever encountered.

If you've purchased it and only paid a little bit PAY the $100 cancellation fee and get as far away from this company as possible. I wish I would have just given up a while ago and cut my losses.

I have used Zoombak off and on for a couple of years but the company has changed hands as of April, 2011. I friend need to track her husband, I told her to go buy one and I would set it up. Well the unit was bad. She went and exchanged the unit. It took 45 minutes to get customer service on the phone, and then they lied to her on how long it would take to get the unit activated. She turned this problem over to me since I have had dealings with them. WELL, this is terrible. In 4 days, WAY out side the time they said they would have the problem solved. NOT!!! Customer service is useless. It took 2 hours of WAITING, and getting the comment many computer voice comment," call back at a later time" and click nothing which resulted in not speaking to any of the people that they say are there to help.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM AT ALL, NEVER, HELL NO!!!!!
THE COMPANY HAS GONE TO POT!
