How about a 7100max?

It would be sweet to have the newer features of the 2100max series (freshmaps, lane assist, etc.) in the 7100.

Still, this unit looks to be a serious competitor, and $79 for 12 map updates over 3 years is beyond amazingly consumer-friendly. I can't wait for this to hit personally.

edit: meant direct help, not lane assist (already on the 7100)

Navigon has more than met the challenge from TomTom.
Excellent map update pricing, great features.

WTF makes Navigon think that US consumers would not want maps of Alaksa, Hawaii, Canada, The Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico?!?!

Own 2100 with 2120 map card, TomTom6 map card and Garmin Quest

The great majority of US users would never need them.

i bought one today for the picture on the box. i HATE this thing. yesterday i bought a garmin 200w and decided to return and upgrade. this is not an upgrade. i'm in one of the major areas thats listed in the navigon's web site, and even on the most major city roads it doesnt know the speed limit most of the time, and on the interstate that magical 3d picture on the box isnt there and no signs. sitting perfectly still, the cursor (you) are jumping all over the map. the unit is extremely SLOW like an ancient computer with too much crap loaded on it. the zoom feature doesnt work correctly. the onscreen buttons are so small you hit more than one at a time. and this is on the widescreen. the poi icons are tiny you have to put your nose against the screen to see what the icon is. the generic icons are actaully better because then it says the name next to it. the unit can NOT BE TURNED OFF. you can only turn the screen off, metely delaying the battery dying. the built in speaker is very low quality and with any volume comes out distorted. the elevation is ridiculously inaccurate, reading anywhere from (im actually at sea level) 50ft below sea, to nearly 600ft above sea. a quick ride around town pointed out wrong street names - not mispelled - completely different. also found fast food places that 1 resteraunt was in 2 different places and 1 of them was just plain wrong. the map itself is less detailed than the other brands and the colors are terrible. the route isnt even highlighted a different color from the rest of the map. this is all only in the first couple hours. im scared to take this thing out tomorrow but, i think ill do it anyways just to get rid of it. more than anything else i feel lied to by the false advertisement of the screenshot on the box. for those of you who thrown your money away on one yet, that would be the same screenshot shown at the top of this page. its a lie. its false advertising. YOU WILL NOT GET THIS FEATURE. if you absolutely HAVE to get one do yourself a favor and buy one from a store you can return it to, not the internet.

The navigon 2100 Max "Does" turn off. I had to call them to find this out. Simply hold down the power button for 15 seconds....yes, 15 seconds. It will then power down.

afterthoughts.....

the suction cup is very weak and takes several tries to get a good grip.

the charging cord sticks straight out of the bottom of the unit, not at a 90 degree flush into the back. this means you cant put it low on your windshield withouth damaging the wire.

reality view is a myth. i know i said it already but im so pissed about it cause its the reason i bought it im gonna say it twice.

the unit charges and connects to your computer. seems pretty useless in its current state. the charging is unfortunately essential since you cant turn the device off. there is no on board anything. you lose the sd card your gps is a paperweight. that being said, connecting usb to charge brings up a removable disc (the sd card) in windows. you can accidently delete everything you full access to the file structure. now we get into the part i said about useless. now youre connected to the computer.... why? navigon doesnt offer any software to edit POI, add, make new, delete old destinations, edit or notfiy them of extreme errors.

Chris,

Do you know how to use this unit?

Most of your rants are unfounded.

First off the unit DOES turn off. The power button is right on top of the unit.

Any USB device in windows will show up as a drive, so your 'potential issue' could happen to any gps user.

You can also charge the unit via the car charger, you dont have to hook it up to your computer to charge.

I bought the 2100 max yesterday. I found the initial setup of satellite fixing took about 10 min.. but after that it was very quick to establish connection.

The suction cup mount works very well.. I really think you just dont know how to put in on right. It is snug and sturdy for me.

The real downside is that it does not come with a manual, you have to goto navigonusa.com and d/l the pdf. Not a biggie but it is what it is.

Text-to-Speech is fine

It seems the maps that ALL the gps's use are not updated for a condo complex I live in NJ in. I believe my unit was built in 05/06 but the maps on any of the GPS's out there don't recogize it.

I may opt for the traffic alert update soon.

The unit has a nice fit and finish as well.

Chris,

A lot of your comments are very one-sided and very opinionated. To each his own I suppose.

Chris,
You have to hold the power button down for 8 seconds for the unit to power down completely.

The maps are the same ones found on Garmin units, and as for the other rants you posted, I didn't have a problem getting the mount to stick the first time, and the poi's are limited, but I didn't expect much for $150. I bought the 2100(not max).

I had a Nuvi 350 before buying this unit a couple days ago. I have to say i sorley missed my nuvi afterwards and i am in the proccess of returning the 2100max and purchasing a nuvi 760.

Navigon is really trying hard, this user interface is pleasing to the eye, neat, and efficent. Sadly to do that they decreased button sizes so dramatically that my small hands couldn't even avoid fat fingering letters and mixing things. I had to use a stylus in all honesty.
Other than that my BIGGEST annoyance was the suction cup. It was not lack of knowledge...it was a faulty suction cup. Period. Other than that it was severley missing POI's and my address for my house was about 100ft before i actually reached my home. It also told me to turn right to reach a destination at a T intersection when the destination was truly on the left. I only had it for a couple days so i can't really say to much just what happened to me. There is also no customization of the unit (ala garmin nuvi) or different voices to choose from. I literally missed my garmin GPS unit like i would miss a person and i resented the french sounding lady in the navigon that barley ever talked. I'm sorry i guess i'm just a garmin guy now lol :) Hope this helped some of you in your decision.

Is it really true that there are no Alaska maps for the 2100 Max? If so, I'll pass this one up. I live in Alaska and travel to and from the lower 48. Have used a Garmin C330 and was truly impressed it.

I lost my traffic lifetime alert icon whenever I turned on my Navigon 2120max. What do you think is the reason? It was working fine the other day but these days, i don't see it.

In the option menu, it's there but whenever I am travelling with my vehicle, that said icon is missing. Hence, I'm not receiving any traffic alert or info.

Please advise. I am getting desperate with my GPS device.

Thanks,

James

do you have to pay for the maps every years like you do for the garmin or any monthly yearly service fees??

or what company if any is there that is free?

I bought the 2120 max demo from the store for 110.00 cdn. Some parts were missing but I just called navigon and they sent me everything I was missing in 4 days free of charge and no receipt required. I'm not sure if I liked the unit yet but as a tractor trailer driver that goes all over US and Can., Ive been experimenting with different units. I don't like the Tom Tom because I like to keep the whole route on display not just the road I'm travelling on. Garmin works fine with this. Also don't waste your money on Cobra units. The screen looks nice and has lots of options but they are experiencing lots of software issues. I bought 2 just in case I had a fauty one but the second one did it too. Jensens Touch and Go was not bad, one of my favourites, but the audio was not loud enough in my truck, but was it ever fast in routing. It beat everyone by a long shot. Time to calculate a trip from Tx from Toronto took 5 sec. If you miss a turn, calculates instantaneously. I'm not looking for any extra features like bluetooth or picture viewer, so I hope this Navigon works out because it does look nice and has nice features for what I paid for it. I've had it for 2 weeks and everything seems to work fine. The guy with all the problems probably works for Garmin. c ya
