Whether you like TomTom's products or not, there's no denying the company had a fantastic year. The Dutch-based GPS company almost single handedly drove down the average price of GPS this year, and at the same time delivered great looking products with innovative and exciting features.
TomTom stumbled slightly in the execution of its products, rushing GPS units to market before the kinks were ironed out, and focusing too much on new features rather than making stability enhancements and basic routing improvements to its existing platform, but overall 2007 was a great year for TomTom.

Just wanted to say that I received mine (TomTom OneXL) for Xmas and so far it is working great, it will take a little getting used to but is much simpler to operate than my previous Garmin GPS V Deluxe, although the V had some features that I really liked such as my speed and an altimeter which this does not have but I think I can live with the ease this OneXL seems to operate with, will know more after a few months, I also plan on using this one with my Motorcycle............

Finally! Thanks for giving TomTom a fair shake.
My experience with TomTom and its support staff have been excellent.
I'm very excited with TomTom's direction and units.
The only problem with TomTom in the US (albeit a major one) is still TeleAtlas mapping, even the most current ones. There are WAY too many "Unnamed roads" - roads that have been there forever - and legit addresses that don't exist in TomTom units.
What good is a gps that doesn't recognize roads and addresses?
Hopefully TeleAtlas mapping in the U.S. will improve; it NEEDS to, for TomTom is much more feature-rich and customizable (and otherwise impressive) than Garmin nuvis and leaps and bounds more reliable than Magellan.
A simple request to the folks at TomTom:
PLEASE use "feet" instead of "yards" on your units sold in the U.S. It would be nice if you were more in touch with how Americans do and measure things when driving.
^^^Uhhhhh, since when are yards metric? As far as I know yards are a US measurement. I do agree that perhaps a toggling between yards and feet would be nice, but meters are about 4 inches different than yards buddy.
I have the TomTom 720 and it works great! Learning curve is short. Creating destination routes is fast. It is very accurate in LA area, always full bars on sats, w/s mounting bracket is ingenious, and build quality for unit and accessories is first rate!
Only bad comments: not everything (features) is nicely described in manual. I found all I needed here, on this website, for the TomTom 720 review. (I did not agree with the review though, for most part.- I did have the newer firmware so that might have solved many of the problems the reviewer had.) Also, the software for my laptop did have a couple of bugs, even after I updated to version 2. But, it was easy to use.
To JohnRobissilly:
Uhhhhhh, I said, "How Americans do and measure things WHEN DRIVING."
When behind the wheel,do you typically think, "I have to turn in 10 yards or 30 feet?" I'd bet that most Americans would think in feet.
This isn't football, buddy. Or, maybe you should read the comments more carefully before responding.
It would be nice if the accessories offered in the UK would also be offered for the same products in the US. Specifically, the hard carrying case large enough to carry the unit, and cord.
For those who complain about the whole "yards" vs. "feet" for how distances are reported, is it really THAT big of a deal? If you use it for more than a day you get used to it and it becomes a non-issue.
As far as the quality of the maps here in the USA, I am sure that the quality will improve over time. I am still "stuck" with the 675 map set because application version 7 isn't available for my device yet, and I wonder how many complaints are from those with the older maps as well.
Does anyone with version 7 maps find that they are better than the 665 and 675 that so many of us are "stuck with" right now?
I suppose I can get used to "Turn left in 360 inches" as well if used a day or two.
I got the 720 for Christmas. I wanted to test it's reliability on a route I could drive with my eyes closed so I took it with me to work. On the screen the map is correct, however if I follow one of the very first spoken directions I would be going in the complete opposite direction of my final destination. It tells me to take the Interstate going south instead of north. No clue where it thinks it's going since it has no other addresses to reference. Obviously I ignore it because I know it's wrong but I won't have that option in an area I'm unfamiliar with. Once I'm heading north every other direction is as it should be. Anyone else have this experience or have any idea why it would do this? It's not like going south would be an alternate route. And how do I fix it?
Regarding the measurement read out thing, I use "Susan" as by driving buddy and she does a great job, everything called out in "feet".
I downloaded Mr. T as a novelty voice and he does every thing in something, I think it's meters but he does not say. He only says, for example, "in 400 turn left". 400 what? It would be nice if he worked like "Susan".
The whole thing appears to be tied to the selected voice, try a different one.

I got the TomTom one for christmas and i love it. But lately it has been taking forever to find gps signal. Is is the cold weather? Who knows, but I still love it!
Cr4685 /Try updating your ONE with your desktop software at least one a week. It wil download a quickfix utility that anticipates satellites positions; so your ONE will know exactly where they are. This will cut the aquaring signal time. I hoe this helps you.
Sorry, I own a One 3rd edition, and I am not happy with customer service.
My unit would not be recognized by my computer. After 45 minutes of online getting nowhere, they asked me to send it in for repair.
The first thing I asked them was 'is there any chance that my FAVORITES, RECENT DESTINATIONS ETC. would be removed from the unit?' I told them I had some invaluable addresses on there. The computer would not recognize it to save it there, but I would hand copy everything I needed if this would be a problem.
I was assured that they would not be removed. My first mistake, believing them.
First, I had to pay $8.00 postage. The way I see it, if it's my fault, ok. If it's yours (and it was) you should pay the postage.
I got 'it' back in about 10 days, not too bad.
The reason I say 'it' is because there was not a single word included with it telling me what happened, what they did, was this my unit, was it a new unit, was it a refurb unit etc etc etc.
I turned it on, dead battery. I hooked it up to the computer, it was recognized as a unit, but WAS NOT THE UNIT I SENT IN! It asked me if I wanted to change the serial # on the unit to the current one and I did.
Long story short, EVERYTHING was wiped off the unit! Not to mention that I had to go through the whole process of setting it up as if I had just bought it. And not a single word from tomtom about what I needed to do, that's what really pissed me off!
For customer service alone, I would not buy tomtom again.
