While LG made an impressive effort with their first GPS device, the LN740, they are really trying to up the anti with the new LN790.
This upgrade to the LN740 feature a 4.3" screen (vice the LN740's 4"), adds Bluetooth technology and video playback, plus features all of the regular goodness such as voice guidance and street name announcements with millions of points of interests. You will also have access to real-time traffic data in 50 U.S. cities.

I just noticed that in your introduction you mentioned that this unit adds Bluetooth but in the in-depth review under cons you state that this unit does not have Bluetooth???
I bought an LG dehumidifier last year. 10 months later it froze up. The nearest warranty service was about 40 miles away. took 2 days to contact and he no longer serviced LG products. I could have send it back and paid shipping but scrapped it and got a whirlpool. Good luck with LG.
On sale for 399 in Canada

Pedro - the in-depth review you're looking at is the LN740, NOT the new LN790. The LN740 does not have Bluetooth. The LN790 does.
Unfortunately, the major negative about LG GPS devices is that it is impossible to figure out how to update the maps. LG doesn't offer map updates and apparently neither does the company that supplies the maps for the devices. In addition finding and installing firmware updates (which they provide sparingly) is very difficult (try finding the firmware update on LG's website). Is it just me or does it seem to be a bad idea to purchase GPS devices from companies whose primary business(es) is not GPS related?
I currently own the LN740. The updated maps will be available on the LG website January 2008.
Steve - do you happen to know how much the update is going to cost? I am looking forward to the update, as there are several new roads/highways in the area.
Does anyone know what updating the firmware will do for the 740?
The ln790 is pretty cool im on my third one already. the first one would turn on but wouldn't boot up and the second one just wouldn't turn on. if the third one acts up im scrappin the idea all together.
Fletch, I need help in determining what GPS to buy.
I am a traveling salesman in the state of Florida so I need the address book to support the creation of folders for grouping by the city name or by the geographical area that I am working. I also need to be able to upgrade the program and maps periodically.
As per your reviews, I have been looking at the LG LN790, and the Panasonic CN-GP50U.
Can you please make further suggestions as to what other units would be best for me? Can you compare these units for me?
Where can you buy them?
I will be using this unit for work so I don’t need the pictures, music, …
I emailed LG and they notified me that updates will be available Jan 08 (like someone already stated) and they indicated it would be free.
I am missing LN740 Nissan and Infinity from the list of car dealerships so if they change their mind and want to charge for updates I will throw a big stink :) Cheers!
PS - I find their customer support is very lacking. I emailed them three times before I even got a reply. My next GPS will definately be GARMIN due to the vast updates available. I dont have many complaints about the LG except the customer support.
Just got off the phone with useless LG Customer Support. I was told that LG will NOT be providing updates, but is referring all customers to navteq.com for updates. Although the customer service agent (and I use the term loosely, since there was no customer service) said that she had personally purchased the update for $60, the navteq.com website does not show any support for LG products. So, an LG employee said she had to pay for the update, but I can't even find the update. Once again, LG Customer Support fails.
I just received an e-mail from LG customer service in Canada.
Here is the response I got concerning the map upgrade for the LN740:
"Hello Steve, Thank you for contacting LG. Unfortunately, there are no update available as of yet.Yes we will have map updates available on our website (www.lg.ca) for download. We are expecting the current batch to be available at the begining of the new year (around Jan or Feb at the latest). Thank you for contacting LG"
Hope this helps...
Contacted LG Canada parts dept. and latest new map upgrade is suppossed to be available early to mid April 2010.
Still waiting on map updates. Guess this mega corporation has bigger fish to fry? Several times I have been messed up because of new construction. Great GPS but I'm starting to wonder about support. Is anyone aware of any optional mounts available for the LN740?
Anyone in Canada know if the LN740 has a Map update availible yet? Thank you
I just called LG today (March 16/08) and was told they do not have new maps and have no information as to when or if they will ever become available.
Also, their customer support web site is hopeless.
My advise is to forget LG for GPS and stick with a name brand like Garmin or TomTom.
I called their support number just now, and the lady said that there are currently no updates for the LN790, and that the company was waiting to see how many complaints / requests they got before they tried negotiating with NavTeq for an upgrade. She said the upgrade cost was either going to be free or $60. I asked her to note that I feel it should be free since I just took my unit out of the box and the maps are from Q42006. I also asked for them to notify me when updates are available rather than me having to keep checking back. Bottom line: anybody with an LG GPS - call the support number and ask for map upgrades. I'm toying with taking the unit back and getting a more popular brand - what good is a gps if it never gets an update, which is really possible here?
What is the support number so we can call and complain. I've been emailing them and getting the response that they will be having map updates in the next few months. But thats from December and no updates yet.
I would also like to know how to complain to LG for the lack of map updates. As an A/V engineer for a major university I know one way to complain. Buy Sony. They seem to support what they sell. My next GPS will be Garmin. That's their business.
Mmmmm was thinking of getting a LP790 but reading all the problems think I will stick with the best...Garmin....
I purchased a unit a week ago. Works great! However, I wish I had seen this page first!!! The 790 has all the bells and whistles and operates execptionally well but if LG is not going to support the product, the unit is going back to the store. What use is a GPS system without updated maps!
It's a bit annoying about the lack of updates. I bought the LN735 for my wife back in July 2007 and was told at the time to expect updates in September. When I called support to inquire, September turned into January and then into March.
On a separate note, LG Canada Service deserves thumbs up because my wife cracked the screen on the GPS by accidently slamming the glove box door on the device. With the broken screen, the touch commands became inoperable. I dropped the GPS off at their Mississauga service location, expecting a call back with a cost estimate. The following week, the GPS was shipped back to me, with a brand new screen, free of charge.
Can anyone help me find the updates for teh LG N790 gps. It is useless as a brick without updates
Any news of map updates?
Can someone post the number to complain specifically for the GPS not the generic customer support.
1-888-542-2623 option#3
Just spoke with LG support in Canada....apparently the map update is now available, but get this....it'll cost ya $99 plus $15 shipping. WTF is with that?!?!
Maps are indeed available in Canada. The part number is SAB32959731. Cost is $99 plus tax plus $15 shipping. If you phone LG Canada's tech support number (1-888-542-2623 option#3)they will e-mail or fax you an order form.
I faxed the order form back to them with my credit card number and the maps arrived the next day by courier on an SD card.
Installation is easy. Just insert the SD card into the GPS and follow the written instructions that came with the card.
can you tell me the file name for the new updated map??
Can anyone help me find the updates for teh LG N790 gps. It is useless as a brick without updates
MY GPS,S NAME IS LG790
THANX TO ALL
gps LG LN790 updating
John,
I think you could share the maps update and we can cover your cost by sending you a check for 10 bucks. 15 of us will make $150.
John do you have any idea when these maps are from? How much newer than the '06 maps on the LN740?
I've been considering updating as well...but don't really want to spend over $100 on something that I'm not even sure is worth it. I'm with "treetown", are the changes worth the money?
Does anyone know how updated the new maps are? Any backups around?
I will never buy and LG product again due to their lack of support. I made the mistake in investing my money in their product again in October and am continuing to pay for my mistake. We bought a 50 in TV from Best Buy and on day 33 (which so happened to have been Thanksgiving and I had a house full of people wanting to watch the game) it completely stopped working. It has been several weeks now and as my tv sets in the shop ( their authorized repair center ), I still have no resolution to the problem. They will not ship the part we need to repair nor give me an RA number so I can get a replacement. They took my money and gave me the finger and now it is my mission to tell everyone in the world how crappy they are.
