I'm a huge fan of Panasonic's electronics. I use their video equipment, audio equipment and tons of other awesome Panasonic goodies. Well now I'm excited to hear that they are transforming their Strada in-dash GPS units into a portable device.

Panasonic announced today that they will be launching the Strada CN-GP50U which will sport a 5-inch touch panel display, Navteq maps of US, Canada, PR and Mexico, 1.8 million POIs, Bluetooth , and Voice Command for setting destinations without touching the screen.

What I see is the downfall is the low POI numbers, I think by next year, GPRS WiFi will be pretty much it with server base navigation. The lower end models will not have it. I think this model can run $399 street price.

I just got the GP50U and it's awesome. Best screen by far on any GPS. POI is 1.6 million (Pedro you're refering to the in-dash hard drive-based unit, not this one). Very easy to use, with voice command! I hated my previous Garmin Nuvi 350 which crashed often while I was driving. This baby is much better!

BTW I never used the POI feature on any of the GPS I've used (Microsoft, Magellan, TomTom, Garmin, rental car ones, and now Strada), since I never trust the info. 12 million or more POIs don't mean a thing if 1) they're outdated and 2) it takes forever to load the ones you want. I use GPS for directions -- and the Strada has enough gas stations and McDonalds for me. HOhoho

I do not own the panasonic mobile gps but I read through their website. I hope they should include the voice command just like Magellan 4250 and security feature just like Garmin 650 in which it helps to determin again thief trying to steal the gps from the car.
