Now, don't get me wrong. I've got a lot of sympathy for any editor/journalist trying to keep up with the ridiculous pace at which new GPS products are released, but Consumer Reports' October 2007 issue is probably doing consumers more harm than good. The magazine recommended old, discontinued models for all three "CR Best Buy" choices.

Read on to view CR's top 10 GPS models, and how their selection compares with our own top ten list.

Fletch

Thanks for posting this, I been fighting those guys and I guess they have to have some track record before they can recommend. And these units are comming out so fast that there is no way they can keep up.
So Magellan with the Maestro 3100 which I feel is the low end budget unit was holding 18% of all GPS PND unit that was sold. WOW.
Price is a factor and I guess if you want to move units, the feature is only second to price which is a real shame. I want quality and feature first and price second but the consumer or public wants low price first than features and quality. What a shame!
It's good that you post this. I asked those guys what good is it when items such as the MRM 2000 is EOL and not avaible to recommend it? The C330 will be a Walmart Q4 item and the TT ONE has been replaced by the TomTom ONE 3rd edition.
Keep up the great work Fletch!

Actually, that is a pretty good rate of current products. CR reviews typically run 25% items which are discontinued by the time the review is published.

I bought the magellan crossover first, had a lot of touble with it until I was told about www.globalpositionsystems.co.uk First the nuvi 660 is an unbeliveable product for what I use it for. Secondly very user friendly. I would recommend Garmin and GPS site. Ah I feel much better now getting this off my chest.

Hi, can you please explain why the Tom Tom One is not highly recommended?

I read your review on the Tom Tom One from 2006 and understand the non-existent url part.

Can you expand on what you think about this unit?

@fred comsumer:

the tom tom one does not use navstar. i wouldn't buy one for that reason alone.

I think Nick means "Navteq" and not "Navstar". TomTom's use Tele Atlas which seem to have far inferior maps for the US.
