Comments for Garmin Map Update Not So Smooth For Everyone

Trouble Ahead Road Sign

It's been a week since Garmin released their highly anticipated 2008 Map Update and while the up is going smoothly for most users, several customers are reporting that their GPS unit doesn't qualify for the free update, is incompatible, or that the entire North American region doesn't fit on their device.

Here's what you need to know:

StreetPilot 2730 is also eligible for the update.

I had no problem with updating my Nuvi 660. It did take around 2 hours, which is on par with what others have said is the average.

You may want to add the Streetpilot 2730 to that list. It's stated on the box and I can confirm that it updates without a hitch - at least mine did.

I own a C330 and have been entitle for the free update.

Since not all the maps would fit in my device, a tech support guy, in the Software department, informed me that there is a way to install the part of the maps that wouldn't fit in my device into an SD card. I will probably do it once I will be back from vacation. This is something that might interest people and if someone had the opportunity to confirm and try it, I think it would be a valuable information for the community.

How do you get the update?

I did my Nuvi 660 tonight. No problems and very fast for me based on some times posted here. Clicked the start at 7:09pm and it was done ar 8:03pm. Using my MacBook Pro.

Looks good. I'll give it a try tomorrow. All the Favorites and previous Favorites were there.

So for me simple.

Is the update CD only good for one time use on only one Garmin?

Locked to one unit?

Hey mozart,

Good deal. I also used a Mac (Intel) and the update was lightening quick as well, compared to the times posted here on PC's.

I remember a while back that you weren't thrilled with the 660. Have your feeling changed (hopefully)?

Updated my c340 and everything loaded without a problem. Went on a 600 mile (round trip) drive since the update last weekend and everything worked as it should.

Why is my Garmin 550 maps so out of date, for instance they do not show the bridge at Tooleybuc, NSW, Australia and routed me 100kms out of my way thru Swan Hill!!!!

I went to register my Nuvi 660 that I bought in May and couldn't because I need a registration code.

What the heck does the registration code do? In the FAQ, it was talking about MapSource and such... Sheesh, I'm all confused.

Getting back to the subject, is a call all that's needed to get the update?

BTW, the reason I am here is because I was going down the a road (State route so it's not small) that opened last year and my Nuvi was showing I was driving offroad....

Ok.. I called Garmin and with proof that I had purchased the NUVI, they gave me my registration code.

Here's some info about the update:

Currently, they are NOT shipping the map update. They said they will make the update available within a week, but for now, there's no way to get the update free, even if you qualify.

I was surprised and shocked that my i5 did NOT qualify for the update.

There was no place on Garmin's web site or with the dealer that said that the i5 would NOT qualify.

Garmin should have been open and honest with its customers.

If it were my business I would have told customers that the i5 would not qualify.

This leads me to wonder how important customers are to Garmin.

Garmin says that the C330 is not qualified for a free update.

But, someone above said that they received a free update.

Which is it?

Is Garmin customer service out of control?

I called Garmin at their USA 800-800-1020 tech support number (only available on weekdays) and after about a twenty minute wait, the support tech said it was a "mistake" that the 2008 update was available.

She said we could ONLY get the update on the web (not by phone!) and that we had to register first. I registered already but she then said nobody can ask for the update on the web until August 24th!

Yet, on the newsgroups. you can see other people got their updates already.

What's going on?

FYI -- Today I registered my Nuvi 660 on the Garmin web site. I purchased the unit on June 4 from Costco with the V8 maps.

After registration, the web site informed me that I was eligible for a free map update. It confirmed my shipping address, and I assume my update is on its way (I have not received a confirmation email).

I purchased the update for my C330 from Best Buy last week. I was dissappointed that several new roads around my area were not loaded yet. Also, the "max speed" reading once hit 1429mph. Not quite sure how that happened. Now it says 109, a little more realistic, but still never happened. I didn't have any of these problems with the original software... Any one else?

I REALLY hope 2008 corrects the navigation problems introduced with Version 8. Version 8 takes me off roads and routes me on side streets then back to the same road. I've noticed this on my street, and at least several other places. Version 7 didn't have this problem. My update is on the way in the mail for my c320

Adam: I purchased the c330 from Best Buy on 12/29/07 and also have seen the max speed reach well over 1,000. I assume this is due to poor programming. This occured on my Software version 5.5.

Also, I was told at the time of purchase that I could get the next map update when it was avail. Well, 9 months later its avail but I can't get it. The website doesnt let me get it "for free" and there's no indication that I'm eligible even though I am.

I just discovered that the 350 doesn't have maps of Hawaii. Is there any way that Hawaii maps can be uploaded or added by memory chip? My 350 unit order is to arrive in a few days.

I just registered my C340 that I purchased last november. Once I went through the update process, it said that I qualifed for the free update and it will be shipped in 2-3 weeks. I gues I'll wait 3 weeks for the CD to arrive. I did not receive any confirmation or order number though.

The article mentions that some models "don't have enough free space" to completely load the update. The Buyers Guide page doesn't address internal memory and Garmin's site doesn't disclose memory. If it's important for map storage why not disclose memory capacity.

I just received my map update and the install was a breeze! I purchased my C340 on 11/06 and I still received the update when I registered online three weeks ago.

I can not tell any difference in the 20008 version verses the version that came on my unit Paid 70 dollars. Huge dissapointment and rip off

Another Garmin issue why does the voice on some of them Like Karen the Austrailin English voice say Doctor for DR. This is so dumb how could that have gotten past the program designers. Yet they have no updates to fix this issue. How could they be so dumb this is a mapping program not a doctor program.

I have a Garmin 60CSx that was purchased over a year ago. I purchased my map wear at the same time I bought the GPS, it is City Navigator - North American NT. This is not a free update and I paid $70 + at Best Buy for it. Anyway after trying to install the update I was told that "This Garmin GPS is not eligible ..."

Got an email from a Garmin techie saying that my C330 doesn't have enough memory to install all the 2008 update. Can anyone else confirm this? Is so, is there a work around?

Also have a new C330 (gift from Santa; just registered it last night). Just spoke w/ very helpful and generous Garmin service rep, and will be receiving the '08 map update at no charge (back-ordered at the moment). As posted elsewhere, the workaround for the insufficient internal memory is to load the lower 48 U.S. states -- don't expect to travel to Canada, so this should be suitable.

After reading all your comments and looking around the Garmin site I found what everyone was looking for.

-Register with the Mygarmin site

-Go to the unlock portion of the menu's (there's like 3 to choose from on the lower right)

-Click around the different unlock options, till you arrive at a menu asking which version you have. Saying you have the older map (since you do) you are differed to an order page for the new CD to be sent to you at no charge.

Goodluck, its there just search around!

FYI I have the C330

I just bought the Nuvi 200 and tried the upgrade of the new maps and discovered the following:

The upgrade sofdtware does not fit in the unit without having to remove unneeded files, the updater software does not work - it goes to 75% and errors out - attempted 3 times, Garmin has NO afterhour or weekend support, Call garmin and you have a 30+ minute wait, now my unit is a very expensive paperweight on account of their updater software not working.

I bought a Nuvi 200 for my parents for Christmas and should have taken the hint then when my Father said his unit would not upgrade. At least his still works after the attempt - mine doesn't.

My priority is to return this unit and get another brand - and see about dumping and replacing the one I got for my Parents too.

I am really surprised that Garmin would let something so riddled with problems like this out the gate. This forum is a little comfort for me to know this is not an isolated problem.

I have a nuvi 250 and just started the Map update for 2009. Tried 4 times to install this on the device, no luck... after about 1.5 hours of processing, there is an error message saying "There was a problem communicating with the Garmin Device. The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I know it is talking with the PC since it wiped all the previous maps. I did the webupdater a week before to upgrade everything to current before the map DVD arrived. Now I have a useless device that will not get me to clients.

gStart does not seem to recognize the device is attached, so exitted that.

I tried a smaller selection of area and a direct USB port on the PC instead of a hub port - failed again.

Credit to whom ever said it... "it's not been smooth for some" after wasting 5 hours and counting. Not to mention paying for the privilege of this frustration. You'd have hopped that

I teach GPS for CPS... we get students for every form of GPS usage... hiking, ATV, boating (of course), snow mobiling, geo-caching, flying, etc. I have been very impressed with Garmin compared to other product brands I tried and owned. At least till now.

Now I likely have to wait on hold for an other hour trying to reach Garmin T.S.

This might make a tale in class... hopefully one that will save them the grief and not steer people to other brands. So far I have not found a similar post with potential solutions/steps.

OK... got it. After many hours! +1 hour wait on hold calling Garmin - but gotta say they are nice to work with... at least Steve is - the guy I got.

While waiting on hold, I did an number of things that made it work. And he confirmed that these were all things he was going to ask me to do anyways.

1) Disconnect all other USB devices not needed (anything other than mouse, keyboard and GPS)

2) Close all programs, all system tray processes, and close antivirus protection.

3) Disable screen saver, disable power management of screen, hard drive, system standby and hibernation.

4) Remove any SD card in the GPS

5) Close gStart - they suggest forgetting it totally and disable it forever.

6) Reset the GPS using the hard to find reset button under the label - press the label so that it deflects to press the button, do not remove the label or peel back.

7) Clean out all your temp files. (I did not do this, but if it failed, that was one other suggestion he had).

8) Do not start other programs till the update completes. Do not browse the drives and file system.

9) Start with a small map update using MapInstall on the START menu (created when DVD run) to make sure it works before doing the full update - this will save hours of map processing and file copies. Pick one province or state.

10) Once you have a small MapInstall update going OK, then do a full update that takes hours using the DVD install method.

11) If you look in the Garmin folder on your GPS device, you might see a file called GMAPSUPP.IMG - this file is installed using the MapInstall tool on the START menu. This is what is added for testing or suplimental maps. Once testing works, delete the file off your Garmin device. I was worried about that, but took his advice. This file is not needed for it to work.

12) When you do a full install (All of North America) off the DVD, it updates the GMAPPROM.IMG file. For the 2009 North American update on my Nuvi 250, it is 1,068,000 Kbytes (1.068GB) now that it is installed correctly. Yours might be different for other models, but the file will be big near 1GB at least.

Hopefully this will save others a ton of time.

Good Luck...
Brian

Excellent post Brian.
Thank you for taking the time to post the information above.
I have had the same I/O problems, now resolved thanks to your post, and i did not have time to wait to call garmin in the morning, so I now have a working sat nav (nuvi 310) to guide me tomorrow and through the weekend on a long round trip.

Brian prince.....you the king! :)
