Hi
Mine says "City Navigator north America NT V8"
Do I still have to upgrade?
Nuvi 660
Thanks for the help, Fletch. I just bought two copies for my nuvi and 2730 and the installation was a snap. Used my Intel Mac and it took exactly 59 minutes! (Go Mac!)
I'll post my initial impressions in the forum.
My new Garmin 660 says "v8" in the maps section not "2008". Do I need to upgrade? Also, I just purchased the 660 this week so I assume that I get the free upgrade if I need it?
Thanks scott
Thanks Fletch. My Maps are due tomorrow and this helps a lot.
Well, I just installed the new maps and I can't say I'm pleased. I ran a simulator to work and to a local shell station and it gets its lefts and rights mixed up. It also extended my trip to work by keeping my on the freeway one more exit and having me double back.
Given the route it took me to work, the building is on the right. It says "arriving on left." The same is true of the Shell station.
That was two out of four simulations. Not a good score. I wonder what other bugs are in this. Are we stuck with this kind of thing for the next two years?
Has anyone else tried these yet?
Got any suggestions Fletch?
It was a snap. My Garmin needed software updates so it downloaded the updates from the internet. Then it had me unplug the Garmin and let it restart. Plugged it back in and clicked next. Took 1.5 hours to load the new maps.
I was hoping to see finally see my street (it's a new street built in 2004) but it still wasn't there. Maybe the NEXT update will have it.
Just a correction about the eligibility of some units for the free update even is buy after May...(citation)
-Thank you for contacting Garmin Cartography. I have a little more information about the free update policy but it is still not in place. Unfortunately the c330 is not going to be one of the units covered under the policy. If you wish to update the maps on your c330 you will need to pay for the update DVD. The nuvi will be covered but I still do not know how far back the date will go. I apologize for any hassles this may cause. You can order the update DVD using the map update link below. The updates are optional and cost $75 USD.
Please let me know if you have any other questions and thank you for your interest in Garmin.
Regards,
Nathan ---
I have the Garmin c320 and need the updated map. Can I update by purchasing the New map dvd? or is this done by downloading the update online?
Thanks
This is what I got from them
"Thank you for contacting Garmin International,
To be eligible for a free update for City Navigator North America NT
2008, you would have had to purchase your Gps unit within 60 days of the
release of the map update."
Excellent website!
Just got Garmin c530 (within my budget!) last week. I called Customer Service, and to reconfirm the note above, the guy told me that there is no FREE update to new map, even though purchased after May 1 - with only limited exceptions. So Fletch, unless you have special influence, bullet 2 on Page 1 of this article needs to be corrected...IMHO.
Thanks again for the great site!
Mike
I did this step about 7 times. It says I have the latestversion yet I live in colorado Fort collins I have aobut 25 roads that arnt up todate that have been there for almost a year. Wellington colorado on the east side of I-25 at the wellington exit is missing many streets. In other words No maps were up dated in my town.
I picked up a copy of the update DVD at a Lewisville Best Buy on 8/5/2007 for $69.99 plus tax. One note that is probably not a big deal but I did not see it listed anyplace on the on the web or the retail box. You must have an active internet connection to install the update.
Also my c330 will not hold the complete update. I chose the lower 48 states. I think the other choice was Canada, (I think) Alaska and the bordering northern states.
Regards,
Tom
Correction to my comment above, the back of the update packaging does say under PC & Mac requirements: Internet access is required.
Well, I just got the disc, but it will only install to c. I don't have room on my c drive, and wanted to install to d instead. I called, and after a 90 minute wait, it turns out they don't offer an alternative to installing to c. Grrr...
Now I can't use the Garmin Street Pilot 2720 I bought a month or so ago.
Any ideas?
I was eligible to receive a free update for my c340 from Garmin but unfortunately after i opened the box i discarded the yellow sticker that content the product key #... so i had to spend $85.89 for an upgrade... So my advice to all is keep everything in the box that comes with your Garmin purchased
I went on line and bought the Map update for 2008 and followed the instruction and it said it had a problem and to try it later and now my GARMIN 340 does not work at all and I use it all the time and I'm getting realy pissed off. And if I don't hear from some one real soon I WILL let ALL my FRIENDS never to by one of these product.
hey I own a Nuvi 350, and it says the map update is over a year old, can the 2008 map fit completely on it, without any problems?
I was in Chicago and went by the Garmin store. I bought the update and they asked me what garmin I had (660) and if I had it with me. I did and they offered to install it for free. They said it would take hour and half to two hours. Everything ran find after the install and I appreciated the help
Although the installation was smooth i have to say it was long.
But the main problem is that my house after 7 years is still not shown at the right place and some POIS are also located at the wrong address. For instance, yesterday, I was located at "4350 N Fairfax Dr, Arlington, VA 22203" and looked for "Home Depot" it gave me a list and i selected the one located at "6210 Seven Corners Ctr, Falls Church, VA". The coordinates are completely wrong. It sent me on the The store "Home Depot" and other one that is wrong is "Michaels Stores" are located in a shopping mall called "Seven Corners Center" and not at the street named "7 corners pl".
I am really disappointed that i paid $700 for the Nuvi 660 + $80 for the map update and still this makes me lose time and money to find something as big as a shopping center that exists for many years.
I hope they will fix the errors and send me a free update as soon as errors are fixed.

I bought the Garmin Map Update 2008 and I have a 4gb SD card. How can I install the newest map on my SD card?
Thanks!
I have the DVD, but haven't installed yet, some questions:
1. My c330's battery life is approx 3 hours, how do I keep it powered up while connected to the PC?
2. What happens if the battery dies during the update?
My dvd is in the mail - I have one question, on my c340 when I updated the latest firmware, I lost my FAVORITE locations. Will this happen when I load the new maps? What do I do to prevent this in the future. Any help would be appreciated.
When your unit is connected to a PC, it receives power from the USB cable. No need to worry there. Also, I had the same issue Art when I updated my c340. Fear not - I bought this update disk and the unit held all the other info that was stored. As far as these updates, I am strongly disappointed at the price and how long this company gives free ones. 60 days is ridiculous. 75 bucks an update quickly adds up to a price of a new one, wouldn't you say? The update did go smoothly however, and it took just over an hour to complete. I hope all this helps.
Just a heads up.
I have a nuvi 350 and at this time when you do the update, it installs a firmware update first which has issues and does not allow for the map update to finish and also causes issues using webupdates.
The tech I spoke with said they hope to have a fix at the soonest today but that it probably will not be ready until next week.
I also have a Nuvi 350 and the Map Update 2008 completely hosed it. Anyway, tech support informed me that firmware v4.9 is the culprit. You have to back-rev your firmware to v4.6 before the map update will work. Support can walk you through this process.
my Garmin nuvi 350 is not recognized from the DVD, but my PC can catch my garmin device.
So I couldn't update the map.
I bought the c340 in December '06 but was able to get the free mapping update. Installing it went smoothly, but I *did* lose all my saved locations.
I just down loaded my FREE UPDATE MAP Version 2008 on my NUVI 680 and i have to say that i really don't care for it. I noticed that before on my DELUX 2007 version while i was driving the streets would be named on the map in pretty good detail now they are only named on a few streets here and there. For example driving on a busy highway on the '07 version it would have the names of the streets along side the highway and the roads that would either pass over or under the highway you were travling on. This new version is not very detailed at all. I like to see the upcoming and surrounding streets with the street names on the map not just on the very top of the unit where is tells you of the upcoming road or street. It also seems slow to respond, I may have just passed a certain street and then it comes up as street ahead. Did anyone else notice this? Any one have any answers to fix this?
I have not updated my map software yet on my 350 but did update the software and it's map logic in routing is really messed up. Where before it routed me the fastest it now takes a very scenic, all around mapping. I want my old 350 logic of mapping back.
I bought 3 Garmin i5's for myself and daughters. Do I have to buy 3 updates or can I update all 3 with the one disk?
three things:
1) if you are registered and receive an email informing there is an update simple click on link and enter your serial number and it will tell you if you are up to date or not
2) There are two versions of the update. The streetpilot 530 and others require Update
2008 city navigator NA NT
3)You can find out the amount of memory on your gps by plugging it into your PC and then going to my computer and right click on the drive for gps and select properties. Mine a 530 has 991mb.
My question is, how many mb is update?
Just curious if I were to buy a 2008 update for my Nuvi 350 and it has already been used, will it work for mine if it comes with the unlock code?
I tried to update my 2720 and it will not show the where to info anymore. Also I cannot type in a city under the address button.
I registered my Nuvi 350 and it said I was eligible for a free map update and to click to order, name & address appeared again, confirmation of of serial numbers and lock # and then I hit SEND order. I hit the send and then nothing! So is Garmin mailing me the free map update ? I searched around the Garmin site but still unsure what is happening. I thought it was going to start downloading and I just burn to DVD. I have owned the 350 for 2 years. My unit is saying the map is over year old and needs updating. Can someone let me know if Garmin IS mailing out a DVD upon registration?
We have 3 Garmin Nuvi 350 units in my household. Will I have to purchase 3 upgrade discs to update the 3 units or can the same disc be used for all of them?
Getting the same problem. Were you able to get this resolved?
Thanks.
When I try to install Map Update 2008 on my nuvi 350 I get the message: 'This application needs a connection to the Internet to continue. A connection was not detected. Please ensure an acitve connection is available, then click Retry, or click Exit to quit the application" I am able to connect to the Internet. What's wrong and how do I correct it.
Thanks
I have the same problem as Gary Cooper. Also, is there any purpose to this website? No one seems to respond to the posts...
I had the '... connection was not detected..." error while trying to update the map for my 255w.
Having tried the steps below, I still had the same error (on my laptop) but, finally, was successful when I tried with the second computer.
I hope this helps.

Question: How do I fix the error message “There was an error communicating with the internet” or “An internet connection is required”?
Answer:
The error message “There was an error communicating with the internet” or “An internet connection is required” occurs during the Map Update installation process.
The following reasons may cause this error:
• Internet Connection
• Firewall software
• Internet Browser
• Internet Explorer settings
Internet Connection:
• Check to verify internet connection by accessing a link on a website
• If the internet connection is wireless or using AirCard, retry using a wired internet connection
Firewall software:
It may happen that the firewall software installed in the computer is blocking communication. Disable the firewall until the Map Update process is complete.
Note: To disable the firewall on the computer please refer to the help guide of the installed firewall software.
Internet Browser:
It is recommended that Internet Explorer be used as the default browser for the Map Update process.
To set Internet Explorer as the default browser:
1. Open Internet Explorer
2. Click Tools on the menu bar
3. Click Internet Options
4. On the Internet Options window, click Programs tab
5. Click Make Default next to Internet Explorer is the default browser
6. Click Apply
7. Click OK
8. Close and reopen the Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer settings:
Check to ensure Local Area Network (LAN) is set to automatically detect settings.
To verify LAN settings:
1. Open Internet Explorer browser
2. Click Tools
3. Click Internet Options
4. On the Internet Options window, click Connections tab
5. Click LAN Settings
6. On the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings window, select the check mark box next to Automatically detect settings
Note: No action is required if the check mark already exists next to Automatically detect settings
7. Click OK to apply the change
8. Click OK again to exit the Internet Options window
If the internet connection error is not resolved after trying these solutions, try another computer with internet connection for the Map Update.
I keep getting an error message while updated my maps. It has happened five times and always at 48%. And now my Garmin has no side streets and will not let me find addresses. What can I do before I launch my unit on a one-way trip?
Hi, I am trying to update my Garmin c340 with the new Map Update 2008. The program does not recognize my internet connection and I cannot update the GPS unit when it is supposed to. Can anyone help me..?
I just called tech support because I could not find an address on my 660. They wanted to charge me for a Upgraded 2008 map DVD. Go onthe website tehy are free. UPS just delivered it to me. Check The web before you buy it It is an automatic form you fill out.
i just buy a garmin c320 and maps they are not up date
I tried to install the update using my Mini-mac. Cicking the "Garmin 208" icon yields a folder one of whose icons is titled "Install Map Data". When I click on it nothing opens.
I have the C-530 and just got it for X-mas. The pre-loaded maps are from about a year and a half ago which basically would be alright for me but I noticed that they just came out with the Map Update 2008 City Navigator® North America NT.
Someone told me to do just this and it worked just like they said it would...Call Garmin customer support and ask for the free upgrade. When they say their little speech and tell you they can't give it to you ask if you can speak to their supervisor. They will say sure hold on and then 2 minutes later come back and say they can give you the free upgrade. I did exactly that and it worked perfectly. Got a confirmation # and everything Said it will be shipped by UPS in 4 or 5 weeks.
I just loaded this software onto my c330 and it only took 41 minutes. I am running a 3.8 GHz AMD processor and Windows XP Professional. I had to install the US part only though, I couldn't get Canada on there too, I only have a 128K SD card. If I get a bigger card later, I might try to see if it'll let me add Canada to the unit.
I couldn't get it to work with the USB cable that came with my video camera, the computer always said that there was a communication error and that the device wouldn't install properly. I finally found the cable that came with the Garmin unit and had no more problems with it.
It still will not find my street which has been in existence since the late 50s. I will have to take it for a test drive and see if any of the problems on the interstates are fixed or made worse.
I have a 2720 with v8 on it. I tried to install the 2008 update, but it gets an error, when it first trys to download to the 2720. The 2720 even have a "Loading.." message on the bottom of the screen. Do I need to uninstall the v8, before installing the 2008?
I wouldn't think you would have to uninstall the old software. When I did mine, the first 1% of the progress was uninstalling the old v8 which was automatic. Are you using the USB cable that came with the unit? You might also want to make sure the computer will communicate with your Garmin before you try to install the update.
When I was doing mine, I think it said "transferring data" rather than "loading".
I have 3 Garmin Street Pilot 2720's. Can I buy one upgrade for all 3 or do I have to buy the upgrade for each?
According to the packaging, you have to buy one for each unit. I know Garmin is collecting data on which units have the upgrade also. Before I did the upgrade, I went to their website and put in my serial number and it told me I needed the upgrade. After I did it, I put in the same serial number, and it told me there were no updates available. I think this is probably why an internet connection is required.
I own the nuvi 360 and just received the free map update disc in the mail. I'm running windows XP on 240g HD. Plenty of memory. My DVD drive will not run the disc. I even tried using the "RUN" option, I get a message to install the disc---From the comments, this could be a blessing in disguise...any comments?
Disappointed. The 2008 Update says my C330 can't hold both US and Canada. It currently does hold them both, so I expected the update to load just the same. Is this a glitch?
I have a 1 gb SD card in it but it doesn't seem to recognize the extra memory. Can anyone help on this issue?
Thanks
Greetings,
was this issue solved? I have the same problems and I definitely do need both USA and Canada maps on my unit - i've got a 2 gig SD card but no luck with getting both maps installed - please help
GABE
I bought the 2008 update from the Garmin website but I have two Nuvi 660's. It won't let me update the second gps. Any suggestions.
The update is only designed for one unit. I think that the company is collecting data on which units have the update (see above post). I didn't really see a difference between the old and new except for that street names for exits are a little better. It is still taking me to places that have been closed for years, even in the Dallas area. I tried to update with both sets of maps and it still wouldn't let me update both US and Canada with a 2Gb memory card.
Installed 2008 update on my c330 and know it can't find the satellites. Anyone have that problem
I haven't had this problem with my c330, but you might want to reinstall the update and see if that fixes the problem. If not, you might want to contact Garmin and see if they can send you another copy of the update.
Hi,
Have tried to install the 2008 update for a 2720 unit on two computers and neither, both running XP home, can find the unit after installing the drivers. Any ideas of what to do next? Followed the directions on screens multiple times and it's not working at all.
Thanks,
Darrell
I am trying to install the Map Update 2008 on my Garmin; I receive the message"Garmin GPS is not eligible for this update because a previous map version is not installed." I am told to verify the connected GPS and contact customer support. I have had the Garmin less than a year and it is the same as purchased. WHAT NEXT?
I have lost my registration code to my C330 unit. I never registered it and now want to. Is there anyway to get a new registration code for this unit if I have the serial number?
If you contact Garmin, I am sure they should have it if you did purchase it. It should not have let you install the update without the registration code. It shouldn't let you past the first screen or two without the registration code.
I own a 15 month old c530 with North American maps installed. I recently purchased the 2008 update. During installation it stated that my c530 lacked enough memory and a choice must be made between US only or Canada and border state maps. I am a Canadian and travel extensively in Canada and the US. I stopped the installation as I did not want to lose the NA maps already there. The update pack says nothing about memory limitations or choices that must be made. It implies complete North American maps. What can I do? Does anyone else feel Garmin misled c530 customers? Comments please.
I have a c530 too and i have a 2gb sd card how do i install maps on the sd card since there is not enough room on my c530
question:
i have a c340 and received the 2008 map update dvd in the mail. however, when i try to install it and connect to my unit, i get this message on my computer screen "This Garmin GPS is not elligable for this update because a previous map version is not installed."
help!!
The update process for my Streetpilot c530 has been most unsatisfactory. Not only did I have to choose one or the other of the two options offered (the north half or the south half of North America), but having chosen to load the north I'm now unable to load the south. Since I'm now travelling in Arizona and California, my GPS has been renedered useless.
Disappointed!
i just updated my Nuvi 350 with the 2009 maps.. when i would go to the map info page on the nuvi it would show the 2008 maps with a box checked 'ALL'.. but now i have the 2009 maps installed. and the box shows and a long list of all the maps ..ie.. Hawaii. porto Rico.....
long list..
how can i make it show ALL like the 2008 did?
BEWARE!!! I purchased the 2009 Map Update and brought it home to install using my computer. Recieving an error that my computer could not recognize the USB download for my Garmin, I called Garmin's support team and learned that only computers equipped with Intel processors can recognize the USB connection - a problem the technician told me they had been running into recently and did not have a resolution. I have a Toshiba laptop and HP desktop that both use AMD drivers (not Intel), so in the absence of an Intel-based computer, my Garmin is now permanently outdated. Very POOR execution from a big-name company in my opinion.
I have the nuvi 760. I want to update to 2009. Does my unit have to be connected while downloading the software?
I just installed city navigator north america map update maps 2009 on my GPS c330 GPS reads can't unlock maps also reads detail maps don't support routing. Need HELP
I just bought Garmin 250W. I am experincing problem to register my device. And also how can I upgrade new maps.
Re the problem noted much earlier "this application needs an internet connection to continue." Has anyone solved this? Garmin's support is useless.

Hi John,
I was successful. You can search for my reply on this page (by doing a find on MDao').
Anthony,
I'm having the same problem right now and Garmin can't seem to figure it out ... did you ever get it to install?
Mike
I have a 250w Nuvi and wish to update to the 2009 Map information. Your description of the Garmins doesn't include the 250w. Can I purchase this update for use on my machine also, which USB cable do I need to get?
Help!
Very interesting reading all the comments. Garmin always has been, and still is, difficult to use thanks to unclear and incomplete instructions and endless internal problems with overpriced downloads. They should quit making 1000 different GPS models, and concentrate on a few and maybe they could get their act together and actually find clear and efficient instructions and intelligent and less expensive ways to upgrade. As it is now, they can't seem to ever get the proper upgrades without screwing up some other part of the GPS. It seems that their basic operating mode is "out the door, you're out of luck"
I have just installed Map Update 2009 to my 2820. My home location, now 3 years old, is not available and the detail maps had to be loaded separately using the tool I 'found' on my desktop? They required that I scrub out my MP3's to make space! All of this sucks and my only consolation is that the company, not I paid for this c**p.... I own 3 other units and wonder how I would update each of them? How would I get the unlock codes? Why do I have to buy the same stupid DVD all over again? This is crazy..
