Mercedes-Benz Maybach, Front

It's been called the most exclusive automobile in the history of mankind. Named after Mecerdes-Benz's first designer, Wilhelm Maybach, Daimler produces just 5 hand-built units per day, or about 1000 units annually. Sit back in the $425,000 (no, that's not a typo) Maybach 62, and all your senses are pampered in luxury as your chauffeur takes care of actually driving the 543 horsepower twin-turbocharged V-12 beast.

But what kind of navigation system do you get in a vehicle that costs about $100,000 more than the average cost of a new home sold in the United States in 2006? Read on.

This sounds like a replay of that other Mercedes "Command Navigation" system. I think it was the SL 55 AMG roadster or something.

The bottom line is if you are going to buy a German car, forget the Nav system. It doesn't matter if it is a Mercedes, BMW, Audi or whatever. All of the reviews I have read here and in other places rate them as clunkers that are almost guaranteed to get you lost. So much for "German Engineering". I have also read that their cars have some quality problems as well. Both Ford and GM beat the hell out of them in reliability.

I think the Maybach uses the Bosch/Blaupunkt navigation system by the looks of the screen.
I was never impress with the user interface, speed or graphics from Blaupunkt.
The car is neat but the GPS system should be updated.
No touchscreen and lacks POI makes this GPS a poor option for the Maybach.

More on Maybach

"The Maybach California Gourmet Tourer is the ultimate machine to enjoy a culinary adventure. Fully automated, the Maybach is safely chauffeured by software using GPS guidance. Offering panorama style windows to enjoy the scenery, it comes fully equipped with every onboard feature imaginable to store and prepare food and wine. It features refrigeration, espresso machine, microwave, wine rack, food preparation area, recycler, foldout tables and other accessories to make any picnic an unforgettable adventure."

"As if the Maybach didn’t have enough power before, now Mercedes-Benz has added an S version – with S representing “Special.” The new engine has been specially tuned by AMG and boasts an astounding 612 horsepower. Luxury features include gold accents and trim of either carbon fiber or lacquered wood."

I understand the Maybach have a Automatic Climate Control With Sun Sensor that will keep the car at a temperature you wish. There is a solar roof panel and there is a refrigeration pump in the trunk that can cool down the car when is parked under the sun. If you have to ask how much this car is worth, you probably can't afford it.

this car is sweet but a 400,000 + dollar car with a lousy gps system is so not worth it but who would have the money to buy a car like that? if they did they would probaly have enough money to get a new gps system and have it put in.

How sweet it is but I would want to put a better gps system in the car.

For that much money, I could get a lot more for myself than a car. Of course, this is a poor person typing. I guess if I had lots of money to burn, then this would be a fine piece of luxury. But I have never really been one for luxury. I guess I would be a rich miser and have non-frivolous items. Cant stay rich if you buy carelessly.

As one who has driven this car (a 2005 57) a bit (5k miles), I too find the navigation system a bit archaic and hard to use. My PDA running TomTom Navigator 7 has more features and up-to-date maps. The lack of a touchscreen in this model is a shame. Add to that that MB wants me to shell out $200/year for map updates makes this a poor choice for a GPS unit. The one in the Range Rover is better than this one (although that has a funky Sirius radio OS as does the Maybach.)

Well, I think the exterior of this car is u-g-l-y! To make heads turn, give me a Rolls Royce ANY day for the money! The Bentley is no longer relevant because the Chrysler 300 looks like it! This car looks very average from the outside. The only thing I like is the 21-speaker Bose system. I'll invest my money in something worthwhile that appreciates - real estate!
