LG Electronics has announced three new personal navigation devices: the LN730, LN735 and LN740.
Ordinarily I'd assume a new entry to the already crowded GPS market would mean the usual crappy outsourced software/hardware design, and a product almost certain to fail. But this is LG electronics, a massive company with deep pockets and a solid reputation for making quality products. GPS sales are up 250% in the U.S., and LG wants in on the action. Given LG's track record, it's just possible Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom might actually have some real competition from LG.
Here are the details on the new units:

They also have their own harddware and software applications. May not be to bad as you have put it!
I am really looking forward to your review
of an LG 740. I am interested in the POI database and how it would compare to
the Magellan or Garmin Nuvi.
Graet site!
Very tempting. I love the smart hardware design, incorporating hard buttons (menu, volume on the side of the unit.
Nice to see that even the LG 735 includes TTS, multiple destination routing and road exclusions. And guess what Flecth? ETA is included as well! I understand that if you tap on the screen where it indicates time remaining, your ETA will appear.
There is one con that I'm reading about and that's the 735's audio. I read that the speaker volume is too low, even at the loudest setting. I'm anxious to hear your take on it.
Also, the NavTeq maps are 2006, second quarter. It's too bad they didn't include the 2007 maps as Magellan does with the Maestro.
I'm just crazy and tempted enough to go out and get one myself as my "portable" unit. The wife has the nuvi, I have less-than-portable 2730. I was planning on trying out the 3140 when it becomes available, but it appears that Magellan has too much of an uphill climb to right their Maestro series, and we all know how Magellan ignores updating prior models with necessary fixes, so I don't know...
Well, I took a good look at the 735 at Circuit City. They didn't have one on display, but had one in an open box that I believe they were going to set up. The salesman there knows I'm a gps buff so he allowed me to take it out with him (by their garage) to play around with it. Doesn't look promising. I'll give some of my initial impressions in the forum.
I'll be waiting for the LN790 model which is due for August. It has a 4.3 inches screen and might have the 2007 Navteq maps. If it does it will definitely compete with the Nuvi 600 series...time will tell
"I'll be waiting for the LN790 model which is due for August. It has a 4.3 inches screen and might have the 2007 Navteq maps. "
The LG unit uses NavTeq maps currnetly. I talked to the NavTeq account manager for LG already
GPS4ME
When will manufacturers figure out the GPS market? We don't need another MP3 player or picture viewer. We need TTS, Traffic, and Bluetooth. Any unit with anything less is toys for teens.
"From GPS4ME: The LG unit uses NavTeq maps currnetly. I talked to the NavTeq account manager for LG already"
Excellent! but will the LG LN790 be preloaded with NavTeq's 2007 most recent map?
Apparently Magellan's Maestro 4040 does!

i hope i can read a review on the LG LN735 soon, i have the budget for it and hope its the best i can get on the market, im super new to the GPS market and I'm hoping that this unit has what seems to be what i need, voice to text, blue tooth, good satellite reception and so forth, im looking forward to the review of the LG products
i purchased the Maestro 4040.I called to magellan tech support for some questions.They responded very well.I think they are in India but we Americans requires the Indian support.Since the indian's got a good brain.Sorry to say we americans are really dumb.I was pleased with the service.Garmin provide a inhouse support but they are really rude.
I like the product and i like the support.
Roger Blaze.
Sorry Guys i am sorry for that.We are not dumb,i am the only one who is dumb.

Road Tested the LN740 - US Northeast to US Southeast over multiple routes (Interstate, State and Local). Overall = EXCELLENT.
VG route planning (accurate, easy, fast reoute re-calculations);
VG audio guidance - Female computer voice but very legible with loud volume (easily adjustable with side button + - controls);
VG auto day/night screen brightness feature;
Useful (maybe annoying) "You are exceeding the speed limit" feature (can be turned off);
VG "extra large" text display (can be selected in settings);
VG to Excellent GPS signal reception (worked fine while just lying on a large box van seat);
Less than 1 minute trip route setup - large finger touch screen address entry, then GO (select Shortest or Fastest), very good shortest planning and very accurate;
The TMC (traffic problem feature using existing FM radio stations - LN740 only) pretty much payed for the unit in gas & time savings the first time it came alive [re-route avoided a 3+ hour delay and later that day a 45 minute delay].
SUMMARY - IMHO the best mobile GPS unit out there (my TomTom and Garmin are now in the trash). Uses USB to update and iPAQ style WinCE OS (Active Sync) type file structure.
Includes many other features and all necessary accessories.

To Disappointed:
Did you even do any fact checking about this unit? LG's own press release from January says,
"...In addition, some models also deliver text-to-speech voice guidance, provide access to real-time traffic services using RDS-TMC broadcast technology as well as deliver convenient voice communication with mobile telephones via Bluetooth."
Looks like a laundry list tailor-made to your post.
Reading the posts and available reviews, I am left wondering about the Navteg's traffic service and Bluetooth capability.
1. What is the fee for subsicription to Navteq, and is it worth it?
2. Does the LG LN740 support Bluetooth?
I cannot find information about either issue, but I really like everything else I have read. And the price looks too good to dismiss, even without Bluetooth.
P.S. The map system in the LN740 is Navteq's 2007, most recent maps.

How do you upgrade this ln735 in the future? The software has no upgrade links and LG itself doesn't have any websites devoted to this as Garmin does. I'm a little concerned that these maps will be obsolete soon with no way to upgrade. I can connect via USB but still no clue as to any possible upgrades. As a side note, I needed a trailer tire (roadside emergency) and was looking for a Walmart under POI (Points of interest) and it showed no Walmarts within 50 miles. 1 minute later I drove by one within 1 block of the interstate.
Does the LN740 have an earphone jack? The online manual does't show it.
No - no earphone jack. You can read my full review on this site - click on the "Reviews" button and then click on the LN740:

I just bought an LG LN730 navigator. I like it a lot, but I need to get a map of France for an upcoming trip. Navteq's website doesn't even list LG as a supported device and there's nothing on the LG website either. How can I do this? Any suggestions?
Richard - looks like LG has posted a few updates for the LN700 series units. Have you checked out their support site: http://us.lgservice.com/gcsc/b2c/hpi/main?tc=swl.command.SwlCmd

where can I get updated maps for my ln735. I need it im a driver.
I'm using a LN 730 very nice and accurancy, But can't find update anywhere?
Some one can help me...
Mail me please ! ;)
I have a ln735, it's great. However how the hell do I update my map. It's bullshit that we can't download an update whenever navteq updates theirs.
A: To find the answer to the map update question (and others), go to the following website and then complete the instructions that immediately follow:
http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp
(1.) under "Bulletin Board" in the lower-left hand side of the screen, click "24/7" support.
(2.) at the top of the screen, in the pink header bar, click "Product Support"
(3.) under the "FAQ" section, go to the end of the sentence and click on "Click here"
under "Brown Goods" section, click "In Car"
(4.) Under "Select the question you want to know", click question #1.
B. To get updated maps for my LG nav, go to:
http://www.lgusa.com/navigation (Note: there won’t be any updated maps available until January 2008.)
I checked the link for the FAQ as outlined above but it doesn't exist?
There was no 'In Car' option. I clicked on "Navigation" but the list is empty?
I like th LN730 but the maps and POI are out of date from the initial load and I want to update them.
so I really would like the latest update and instructions.
Also i'm planning a trip to europe and would like to update/add/replace with some EU maps.
I just bought the 735 today with no regret. Althought the setup was a bit annoying due to the fact you have to choose your country map 1st!!!!!!
The voice was loud as hell, who said it was low?
I know why the guy wrote that because of the holder that cover up the speaker.
I am still waiting for an update version as far as I can see the current version is 06.
I purchased the LN740. Excellent product but now I would like to upgrade the map.
I called LG for a map upgrade and was told it will only be available in March of 2008.
Today being the 14th of January, I went to www.lgusa.com/navigation to see/download the updated maps. It doesn't appear that they've got them yet. Hopefully they'll do it soon. It's kind of irritating driving on a road to find it doesn't exist on the GPS.
I don't see in car either. I see car audio but there's no updates. Anyone know when it will be out or if there are other sites that we can go to to update our maps? I have a 730
thanks
Seems like many owners of lg nav devices are asking the same questions,I just received an LG 730 am quite impressed by some of the features but where are the updates? the manual points to the the LG website for map updates but updates are not listed.
I like the LG 730 with an exception to the battery life. It will be fully charged and after I drive for 1 hr i have 1 bar left of battery life.
Has anyone been able to get updated maps?
I wanna buy it, but I'm going to came back to Italy next month...Can I buy it and than upgrade it with software and italian maps?
Thank you.
I picked up the LN735 on sale for $99 @ Circuit City!!! Can't beat that price for the features.
Here it is 2/10 and still no map updates. Is there another way we can dload the updated maps? Maybe directly from NAVTEQ
I still didn't see updated maps on www.lgusa.com/navigation
it is feb 10 now.
Are there maps of Australia availabel for the LG 730. If so, where and are they available on an SD card.
I have made it my lifes mission to tell every living soul that LG is the worst GPS manufacturer on the planet. There public non-response to map updates has got to be the best example of the current state of customer service in this country! Not to mention that you need a website GPS to navigate their site! It would appear that they have been taking lessons from HP. No rhyme or reason just on click leading you to another page crammed with "How great we are"! Excuse me, I'm leaving to go buy a GARMIN!!!!!!!!!!
I also have tried going to the lg site and to and to avail have I been able to find 08 map updates for my ln 740. Is there anywhere to go for the updates?
hola
espero me puedan ayudar, miren tengo el modelo FM37, pero perdi el manual y todo lo demas a hora no se como utilizarlo al 100% donde encuentro informacion de este modelo de ante mano gracias
I recently obtained the LN735 and was excited to use it. However, I also experienced every complaint voiced here. The charging process is confusing, in some cases the manual is poorly written and counter-intuitive, and of course the maps cannot be updated (4\25\08). Even after spending an hour running the loop between LG's site and the Navteq site! There is obviously VERY poor coordination between LG and Navteq and VERY poor consumer information on the LG website for said product. I am extremely dissatisfied with LG, in general, even though the LN 735 unit is decent. Personally, I find it hard to believe that support is so shamelessly neglected. I will steer clear of LG in the future.
I've been trying to get updated maps for LG730 since last year. The LG support team sent me their couples totally useless links to the US site, and advised me "directly find maps in any european countries on their sites". None of the european countries I needed(France, Netherland, Spain) even mention this unit. I am tired of that crap and planning to buy different GPS. LG sucks, stay away from that name.
Still waiting map updates, mine are from June 2006.
2 Years old and still no available updates!

Anyone bought this update yet? $99 seems a little steep for something that comes from NAVTEQ and every software manufacturer,website, and GPS provider gives you for free. For another $100 I might as well sell this unit, get another and rave about how crappy LG is.
I purchased a LG730 GPS in Dec/07 and have been unable to obtain any kind of support for umdating the maps. I will never buy another LG manufactured item as long as I live if this is the kind of bogus crap that LG provides. Do not believe any of their advertising.
Will share cost as well. Any progress?
Tony,
Did you buy this yet?
Any one want to share the 99$ for the LN735 map updates ?
Tony
Is there anyone who wants to share $99 for the LN740 map update? Or anyone who knows to update maps cheap?
Any update on this? I'll share cost.
buy the maps and set up a paypal donations link to the maps and charge $10.00 for the update.
I have this gps but it tells me that i dont have sighnal around where i live so i dont know what to do.
If you know what i can do can you please respond and tell me please!
LN740 WAS JUST PURCHASED TODAY, LG WANTS $99 + SHIPPING AND HANDLING TO UPGRADE MAPS TO CURRENT WHAT A JOKE BUY THE UNIT AND THEN HAVE TO PAY MORE TO HAVE IT BE USEFUL
