Novogo S700 BT

REVIEW UPDATE: This GPS model has been discontinued

Taiwanese based Novogo is better known in Europe than here in the United States, but that will no doubt change, as the company tries to penetrate the lucrative US GPS market. This week I tested the S700 BT, Novogo's top-of-the-line navigation system. I put the Novogo S700 BT through GPSmagazine's rigorous testing criteria, and found out just how this unit stacks up against the increasingly competitive GPS market.

One important capability you overlooked was the ability to create/store tracks. This is an excellent feature for 4WD, ATV, Trail bike and bush walking enthusiasts and also in a round about way for boaties. Tracks can be uploaded and downloaded something you will not find in any other street navigator brand. With the increasing number of forums and sites with tracks available for free worldwide I am certain this feature has more importance than TTS.

There is a few things you should know about the Novogo. They came out with a voice command PND that did not do well using the Navigon software much like the one that is used by Sony. Very difficult to use and not user friendly.
They apparently switch to using the iGO software application, this software is also used in the Mio units. The TA maps have as much as 12 M claimed POI's but we don't know how accurate or needed they really are. I would guess at the $500 price point, this unit will have to do much more than what I have seen. No TTS, No telling of which side the final destination will be at and the user interface due to patens limitation is hard to use, trying to cancel a route or input a POI is a lot of work which should not be. You should not have to select more than 5-6 touch of the display to start routing, it is to bad that every company think they can put a SiRF GPS receiver and some off the shelf application together and call it a navigation system.
My guess is this is a $299 unit, think of the Mio 310x at $149, is this unit almost 3 times better? They both have the same iGO application using TA mapping software with a 3.5" display and no TTS.
I am sorry to say I am not impress with all these new units claiming to be a GPS system, they maybe acceptable in EU but here in NA, I think our expectations are much higher.

I've had a couple Novogo units, and I've not had problems with them, with the exception of a bad SD card on my S700.

In terms of pricing, we were buying them for around $200 Canadian, and nothing in that price range came close to the performance.

I've nav'd to and from Florida, and the entire time while we were there (3 weeks) without a hiccup... once you learn to wander through the features, and menus, it's an easy and well optioned unit.

I've also purchased a Mio P550, due to the nav software being so similar, and the Novogo out performs it in terms of speed and function.

I'll say that it isn't a Garmin, but for the price, it isn't that bad a unit.

I own a Novogo S700.
It it usually OK, but it does some really wierd things. The other day it sent me off at an exit and then straight back on again.
It often seems to be choose tiny little roads (in Kent we went along a road so narrow that it was a bit of a nightmare when we came across a van going in the other direction.
