Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG Roadster

The 510-horsepower Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG Roadster packs enough punch to make you feel like you're strapped into the space shuttle during blast-off. With a sticker price of about $150,000, the SL55 is nothing less than awe-inspiring. But what about the integrated GPS navigation system? This week I take a detailed look at the DVD-based built-in navigation system on the Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG Roadster.

This is a very comprehensive review of the SL55 AMG COMAND Navigation System - thanks!

I added a link to your review on my AMG Market blog. My readers will appreciate your thoroughness and comments.

I have an 06 500Sl with virtually the same Nav. system. The owners manuel does not give nearly as definitive a discription as captured here. I learned some helpful tips, thank you.

i have a CLS550 and currently cannot fathom the comand system. In my last car i had used CoPilot 6 and LOVED the navigation, POI's information on screen etc. My current problem is the Command system will not route over freeways - i have tried toggling the avoid freeways on and off and it continues to be WAY off base in the navagation routing

Your reviewer is being kind. I have an early CD-based Comand unit in my 2002 G500 and the latest DVD version in my 2006 CL55. Both of these systems are abominably inaccurate. Examples: they do not display a "house number" but for any of the largest cities. Thus, you maybe on the proper avenue but a mile or more from your desired location. They have several court houses marked as POIs but I ended up 1/2 mile away from two. Not great when the Court is waiting! The lack of estimated arrival time is unacceptable. Finally, in Canada anything off of the TransCanada Highway or a major city is marked as being "offroad." The Garmin 330C is more programmable and accurate. When I courteously complained and asked for an improvement, the dealer and MBUSA could care less.

The GPS in my 2005 S430 worked pretty well, although my wife's Garmin finds POIs much better. The one in the new 2008 E550 I just took delivery on really stinks! It provides the most roundabout, least efficient routes, that ir can't be relied on.

Nice comprehensive review. As a European user of COMAND, I must agree with your assessment of its lack of features, though I haven't even got the 3D-ish road view (just plain 2D). On top of which updated DVDs are costing me (each year!) as much as buying a new 3rd party GPS! German engineering = great, but their software sucks bigtime.

have gl450,navigation sucks. i use my portable tomtom system instead because better features and millions of poi's,very fast re-routing,etc.

I have a 2006 SLK 55 with the Command system. I also have a Nuvi 350 GPS, for my other vehicles.

The $300 Nuvi 350 GPS is so much better than the GPS in the Mercedes, that I'm embarassed for Mercedes. I've been tempted to take my Nuvi in my Mercedes since the built in GPS is so pathetic.

If I buy another Mercedes (and I hope I do...I love my car), I will NOT purchase the GPS unless there is no other option.

08ML350- I thought it was me! Very comprehensive review- I learned a few things. I hope Mercedes reads, and learns, and improves. There are many other cars out there with far better Navs.

It makes me feel better that the expensive car has just as lousy a NAV system as my E350. The thing is a piece of junk and continually routes a 20 mile trip on freeways into 90 mile trip through a major city. I will not purchase an MB again. The electronics stink.

Review is very kind to MB. In short the GPS Nav system in my 2006 SL500 is JUNK. With all the negative comments over the past few years, it shows what MB thinks of customer feedback.
Acura seems to be the best for factory installed GPS systems that I've seen to date.
Does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumour that Apple are going to design the next GPS Nav system for MB? or is there any 3rd party software that will work with Command?

Thanks

ML350 navigation system is ridiculous - impossible to key in the house number on a street. I need 350, but all I can get is 3500. Big difference! My Garmin will be the one I use from now on!!!!!!

Good review. The Comand Navigation on my E350 is identical to the SL55 and is difficult to navigate. Does the upgrade disk have house numbers instead of blocks only?

The GPS system in my 2007 E550 is, simply, not useable. I have tried for two years to get some use out of it and it simply does not work. It proposes ridiculous routes, labels cities that do not exist and does not even show some larger cities on interstates. The dealer is no help and, because they don't care, I will not buy another MBZ.

I have an E350 with Navigation but the screen is somewhat washed out (I think it's called burn-out). Is there a way to get a new 7" screen? Or can you purchase a used GPS system or GPS screen for the MB E350? Any helpful websites?
