Comments for CES 2007 Coverage: GPS Du Jour - Nextar's Q3 and P7

Nextar Q3 at CES 2007

If you needed any more proof that EVERYONE wants a piece of the GPS pie, look no further than Nextar. Nextar is the consumer electronics division of recreational furniture company MAC, and it seems even the furniture makers of the world have realized the white hotness that is the personal navigation market today.

At any rate, Nextar announced two new GPS units at CES: the Nextar P7 and the Q3.

Well, all these new GPS suppliers will be selling their outdated inventory by Q4 for $99 if they don't pay attention to only the hardware look and feel along with the maps.
The user interface and how the units perform will be the final judge of sales number, cheap is good if it functions properly. The most expensive product you may buy is one that you will not use. There is a price to pay for playing in the PND market and it is not just buying a hardware and mapping software for $110.
Garmin is spending big bucks on a commerical on Super Bowl, branding the name is not cheap either. I wonder if Levi's will be offering a PND soultion pretty soon?

I agree with GPS4ME,
One of the main reasons we started GPSmagazine was because it's very difficult and confusing to find good reviews of GPS units out there. With more and more companies flooding the market with 2nd and 3rd tier products, it's more important than ever to make informed purchasing decisions. Companies like Garmin, Magellan, and even TomTom have been spending big money on R&D making sure their products are easy to use, reliable, and have excellent routing engines.

I am very cautious of all these new companies entering the market, and it will be interesting to see how they stack up against the competition when I perform my in-depth product reviews.

NEXTAR Q3 -GOOD FEATURES BUT ALREADY HAS LOST CAPABILITY TO SAVE "FAVORITES" AND GO TO "RECENT" DESTINATIONS AFTER A WEEKS USE?! NEXTAR TECH SAYS SEND IT BACK. I LIKED IT A LOT WHILE ALL THE FEATURES WORKED. THEY ARE SELLING FOR UNDER $250 NOW.

I am trying to find a GPS unit for my daughter a salesperson for pharmaceutical products. She needs an address book with at least 200 entries and should have space to enter a contacts name and phone number, besides the location.
She needs multiple locations selected from the address book. A possibility to cancel some selected points with the unit recalculating the new trajectory. This is almost impossible to do as there is never enough information available, even from the manufacturer. What I am trying to do should apply to thousands of salespeople but somehow no one ever caters to them.

Best feature of the Q3/NGPS3 was the $99 price at A&P supermarket. Just don't expect much more than the most basic useability. Its WinCE 4.2 implementation is buggy, requiring cold restarts when it hangs, followed by slow bootup. Forgets how to talk after a while. Forgets it has a GPS receiver sometimes on warm starts. Turning power off from panel switch will still drain the battery - one must use the hidden master switch with the stylus. No warnings to prevent accidential deletions. No map updating possible although tech support blows some smoke at you about future updates. Useless warranty with $140 replacement "upgrade" to current similar model.
