Comments for CES 2007 Coverage: Garmin nuvi 680

Garmin's Booth at CES 2007

I was especially excited to visit Garmin's booth at CES. Their nuvi 660 is my current Editor's Choice and I've come to expect great things from Garmin. I managed to get my hands on Garmin's newest offerings: the nuvi 680, nuvi 670, nuvi 370, StreetPilot c580, and for all you hunters/dog trainers out there, the Astro. I'll cover the nuvi 670, 370, and StreetPilot c580 in other articles. For now, let's take a look at the nuvi 680 - Garmin's top-of-the-line consumer GPS.

Thanks for the review. I'm curious if the nuvi 680's MSN Direct traffic information is more accurate or less accurate when compared to the nuvi 660. Do they both use the same service (traffic.com ? ) to get traffic information ?

I too am wondering whether you've had a chance to do a real-time test drive with the 680. I'm not only interested the capabilties of the traffic info, but in how far around each metro area they extend. I live in CT. near the NYC suburbs. Is this going to help me?

Garmin feels both MSN Direct traffic and Clear Channel traffic is about the same, so if this true, then why would anybody pay for additional traffic service from Clear Channel when MSN will offer first year free? I also feel having Traffic, lowest fuel prices, movie times and weather will not be enough, they will need some added features from MSN Direct such as news, stock prices, sports and more. I found Garmin did not meet expectation as to the WOW factor this year, was looking forward to something in the DASH navigation features from Garmin. As I understand it, it's coming soon.
Looking forward to WiFi or GPRS connectivity with real time map and POI updates, along with this, the units should be able to text message and have AVL capability.
Hoping to see more from Garmin in the near future.

You're not happy because you're not getting stock prices and news on your gps in the car?
Maybe you'd like to watch a movie too?
Excuse me, but how about we keep our attention on the road and not kill each other while we're reading the latest on our little nav boxes while we're in traffic?
This is getting kind of ridiculous.
This movie theater info and other stuff may be intended for people to use when they're not moving, but we know that in reality drivers will do otherwise.
Anything more complicated than this and we might as well just start reading the newspaper while we're driving.

You are righ Jeff. We need to keep the GPS to do what it's supposed to do.

I read Garmain can't avoid certain streets. This is a dissapointment. Otherwise, it looks like a nice device.

I really don't care about movie times, weather etc. I can get that information on my phone.

Gas Prices is a plus, and I find very useful.

Do either one of you realize that *passengers* in cars use GPS devices too? Since when is it assumed that I must be a driver if I'm using a GPS in a vehicle? Such close-minded comments...
