| REVIEW UPDATE: This GPS model has been discontinued |
What a year it's been for Magellan! Several months ago they released the RoadMate 3000T, 3050T, and 6000T, only to discontinue the 3000T a few months later, and replace it with the RoadMate 2000 and 2200T. Oh, and along the way Magellan was acquired by Shah Capital Partners (SCP).
The 2200T improves slightly on the RoadMate 2000, offering text-to-speech, optional real-time traffic data, a longer battery life, more rugged (and water resistant) case, a photo viewer, and a music player.
THX for the review, I have owned the 2200T for about a month now and am slightly underwhelmed.
I just the good thing about the problems is that they are for the most part firmware repairable.
Still cannot figure out how you can sell a GPSr that does not display town names
Fletch,
Thanks for another excellent review. As you know from my emails, I was 98% sure I was going to buy a 2200T for Christmas. It had all the key features I was interested in.
I scoured the internet for every bit of information I could find on the 2200T. What soured me on the 2200T were the large numbers of unfavorable comments from current owners. There are many unhappy owners of the 2200. The chief complaints were the inaccuracy of its routing and frequent lock ups and crashes.
Needless to say, I became skeptical and began to have serious doubts about the unit. That promped me to widen my search and evaluate other products. That led me to the Garmin c530. I must have read 50 user comments from c530 owners. EVERYBODY LOVED THEIR c530. I can only remember reading one user that had anything negative to say. One guy was so impressed with the accuracy he said he was going to take it to the super market and see if it could lead him to the dairy case.
I figured the c530 was a safer bet if so many owners were totally in love with it. I took delivery of my c530 this week. ...AND I LOVE IT TOO. It many not have all the features of the 2200T, but what it does have works flawlessly. I was too uncomfortable selecting the 2200T because of so many disappointed owners. I am having no second thoughts on my selection.
I purchased my c530 from Amazon. I signed up for the Amazon credit card and got an additional $30 off. I also got free shipping and there is no sales tax. My total purchase price was $362. The c530 is a lot of GPS for that money.

Fletch,
After reading the review I am some what disappointed. I feel that some major information needed to make a buying decision is missing, such as:
Routing performance (comparison to internet mapping engines and/or the Nuvi series GPS).
Screen intensity demo with a side by side picture of MRM & the Nuvi 360/660.
The effects of the reduced POI database compared to a device with a bigger database installed.
These are small facts that are easy to produce and can give a better answer to the uncertainty involved in buying a newly introduced device.
I am in the process of doing research on various GPS systems as I in need to buy one within a month or so and I must say that the review didn’t really produce the data that I need.
Zeev
Zeev - Thanks for the feedback. I have updated the review with the information you correctly pointed out was missing.
Best,
--FLETCH
I am disappointed with the new Magellans. They have removed my favorite features - the ability to enter an address without knowing the city name (or zip code), and route optimization for multiple destinations. The only intriguing feature they have added is POI by exit, which is interesing and seems useful, but Garmin's POI along the route feature is perhaps more useful, as you don't need to be on a highway to use it (but you do have to have an active route). Also disappointing that they have not upgraded the outdated graphics. Overall, a very informative review, but disappointing in that I was hoping for better from Magellan.
If Garmin were to add multi-destination routing, or Mio were to add ability to search address without city name, I would have my near ideal GPS.
One thing that most people dont mention when commenting about the 2200T is that it is water proof/portable and under 400 bucks....how many other GPSrs with 3.5" touch screens out there can say that?
Fix the software issues and this will be a killer motorcycle GPSr IMO. I still think there is good potential for this GPSr but it will take Megellan efforts to improve.
Fletch,
Many thanks for the additional info. It is very useful. And if you like to take the role of Santa, you can make my day if you add a side by side picture of the MRM & the Nuvi 66I in bright sunlight as a present.

After searching the internet for reviews on GPS systems I found your site. Your reviews were very helpful in helping me make an informed decision. When I first began to look at GPS my heart was set on finding the right "Magellan" for me because someone I know gave me a recommendation. I instead read all of your reviews so that I could make an Informed decision. Your reviews helped me be optimistic and understand the general Pros and Cons of the different GPS manufacturers (Garmin, Magellan,Tomtom, etc.) My Wife bought me the Magellan 3000 a few weeks ago before she read any online reviews. After reading all your reviews and your "Units to Avoid" section I took the unit back. After reading that you and many other users were having problems with Magellan units sometimes being sluggish and freezing I decided to start researching the different Garmin units. It seems that Garmin does have many very reliable units. I saw that you made the Garmin Nuvi 660 your "Editors Choice". Among other things, I really like this unit's sleek design. Since I can not afford this unit, I figure the Garmin Nuvi 350 is my next best choice since the "Blue Tooth" and "Traffic" features are not important to me. I narrowed down my search between the Garmin Nuvi 350 and the Magellan 2200. I like both units because they are affordable and have many of the newest technology upgrades and features used in GPS. I know you did not review the Garmin Nuvi 350 but looking at similar Garmin reviews and this Magellan 2200 review I am planning to purchase the Nuvi 350 from Walmart for 440.00 and cross the Magellan 2200 off my list since the only thing I can find it has better is that it is water resistant. I was hoping you and the other readers could tell me if I am making the right decision. Thanks again Fletch your reviews are second to none!
This is my first time at this site. Very nice indepth review.
Dale - If you're on a budget, I'd recommend either the MRM 2200T, the Garmin c530, or the Garmin nuvi 350. If you're into the features (route exclusion, multi-destination routing, etc.) then I'd go with the 2200T. If you want the most easy to use unit that does great, reliable, basic navigation, then I'd go with the Garmin c530 (currently running around $390 online). The nuvi has the same navigational features as the c530, but adds audio books, a travel guide option, and a slightly more complex interface, then I'd say get the nuvi. Strictly speaking, Garmin has a slightly better routing engine than Magellan, although the RoadMate 2200T has newer maps and POI data than the Garmins. All three will be good choices. Personally, I'd probably go with the nuvi just for the nice form factor and Garmin's routing engine, but it's really more a personal preference question than one being definately "better" than the other...
Hope that helps.

I am wondering how well the new SIRF chips will work with the unit down out of the window and near the gearshift in the center. I have an old Garmin legend and it was ineffective when not in the window. I only ask because I am in California and we are not allowed to have units in the windows.
Users' comments on this model on Amazon.com are extremely negative. Has anyone seen these comments? If these comments are correct then this model should not be on the recommended list
I just looked at Amazon's site - it shows 4 out of 5 stars based on 23 customer reviews. What makes you say it rated extremely poorly?
Hi
I had Roadmate 760 but due to the failure I sent it back to Magellan for repair. They are ready to send me 2200T as replacement after 3 months of followup!!,
My question is should I accept 2200T or should I ask them to giove me 6000T? which would be a better choice?
Thanks
Parveen
The 2200T is a much better GPS than the 760 in that it has SiRF's StarIII chipseet, and will get much better signal reception. The 2200T also has newer maps. However, the 760 had a larger POI database (6 million vs 1.5 million on the 2200T). The 6000T has the full POI database (6 million) and supports route optimization (the ability to enter a bunch of addresses and have the GPS figure out what order makes the most sense). That said, the form factor on the 2200T is much nicer than the 6000T. Also, the 6000T is older than the 2200T, and will likely be discontinued within the next year.
Unless you really need the features unique to the 6000T (route optimization & larger POI database), I'd get the RoadMate 2200T over the 6000T. Hope that helps.

I just ordered my 2200T after reading your review and finding a real steal, possibly literally, on eBay (got it new for 300 shipped) however I must admit some of the comments on here worry me about it's frequent crashing. I mean, if the unit occasionally locks and needs to reboot that is one thing (hell it's windows, I’m used to that) but if this is a constant problem instead of an occasionally annoyance I feel I may have made a poor decision.
With any item I have extensively researched before purchasing, I have always found negative reviews and the product works great for me. It seems like negative reviews are just part of the deal. What have you heard about this unit’s propensity to crash Fletch?
Mike
BTW: Your reviews are the most comprehensive and helpful I have found online. You definitely kick the crap out of CNET and others. Thanks so much for all your time!
Update: I have recieved my 2200T and have gotten to use it for 2 days now. It's WORTHLESS. I honestly have no idea how you or anyone else had such positive things to say about it unless we are talking about a whole different gps unit. I have used it three times, and the first two times it froze completley, and the 3rd time is couldn't find a signal for more then around 1 minute of my 35 minute drive. Not that it should matter, but I live in a highly populated metropolitan section of Northern Virginia around 10 minutes outside Washington DC. I just hope i can return this worthless piece of junk.
Mike
MIKE - what you describe is very unusual. Sounds like you got a defective unit. I'd definately bring it back and exchange it.
--FLETCH
I would usually do that, but I have read so many other negative reviews on Amazon about it crashing and freezing. If I can return it, i'm going to prob. buy the Garmin C530 instead. It seemed to be in the same price range and while it doesn't have text to speech or some extra frills, it also has almost all glowing reviews, so at least the features that it does have will work. I will read your review on this product if you have one, but does that sound like a good trade in to you? (especially for someone who doesn't care at all about mp3 and picture viewer and just wants a solid gps)
Mike
Hi Mike - yes, the C530 is an excellent GPS, as is the C550. You might want to check out my review of the c550.
--FLETCH
Fletch, I have the 2200T and I like it but have found it to not find the quickest route to my home in a small town.. On the highway its great ..
I like the idea of
a. Gps with multi routes
b. Text to speach
c. Zip code entry
Would you pick the Garmin c550 over the 2200T for this??
The only other thing I dislike about the 2200T is that the speaker is not real loud, is the Garmin unit loud??
Thanks Joe
I have noticed that Costco now has the 2200T at a very low price. I would like to get one but can't find info on some of the features of this unit. What I would like to know is if the 2200T provides data on max. speed, time stopped, time moving, etc. on a route. I will be mounting this on a motorcycle and this info is important to me on a long trip.
WILLIAM - the 2200T doesn't have those features. You'd need a Garmin Zumo instead.
--FLETCH
Fetch,
You state that - Magellan RoadMate 2200T & Magellan CrossoverGPS 2500T are essentially the same units "but (2500T) adds off road topo maps and a protective rubber sleeve for outdoor use."
I took a look at Magellan's website under "Maps & Software" section:
http://www.magellangps.com/support/softwareupdates/2200t.asp
Says "soon" you'll be able to upgrade your RoadMate 2200T to a CrossoverGPS.
Will this upgrade be FREE and what's the ETA for downloading? Thanks for any info.
Makes more sense to buy the 2200T @ $300 with a free upgrade as opposed to buying the 2500T @ $400.
Scott
Scott - the upgrade from the 2000T to the Crossover will not be free. This is an "upgrade", not an "update". There's no official word on pricing yet, but I'd be willing to bet it'll cost $99.
--FLETCH
Well I purchased the 2200T model and a Garmin c550 to do my own review. Both have Pro's and Cons ..
I found the 2200T to a more detailed map system showing more street names and train tracks with the RailRoads Name.
The 2200T also always seems to show what RRoute Number I was on as well as route numbers running parrel to the road I was on.
The 2200T booted up fast and I like the zip code search feature. Garmins c550 stated it has this feature but you must type the zip code in the where it asks for a city name. Everytime I attempt this the garmin rejects it.
The only things I didnt like about the 2200T was that there choice of graphic representation of the road and color choices for street names. Both units have the same size screen but the Garmin did a better job in presentation of the roads and street names. Another way I can explain this is that the 2200T choice of text size and road size was kinda small and you really had to take your eyes off the road to zero in on what you were looking at. When of course the 2200T was fast to recalculate, faster than the Garmin unit slightly. Well enough that I noticed the difference in time.
Also when I first turned on both units for example around city buildings it took a long time for the Garmin to find signal, The 2200T was instant.
The 2200T has a small speaker that was not very loud in my opinion. The Garmin would wake the dead.
In the end I chose to keep the Garmin c550. Only because I liked the way they displayed the text and roads. Very Big and clear.
As far as searching for a city or a street name the 2200T was a clear winner. When starting to enter a street name certain keyboard alpha characters became highlighted as if the unit was psychic. I swear the thing could predict better than Sylvia Brown LOL .. So the winner for me was the Garmin again only because of the way the graphics were displayed. If Mag 2200T would look at the way Garmin displays its info in respect to graphic size the 2200T would win hands down. At night the 2200T would display its strret names in a small white rectangular box with black text. It sucks. Small print. The garmin used white text, plain and simple. So I hope someone from magellan reads the reviews of a customer like me that purchased both unit and placed them side by side to test.. Magellan make your graphics like Garmin and I will buy magellan .. Im soon gonna attempt to test a TOM TOM model that a friend has.. I will post latter.
can the 2200T be used on a motorcycle with the unit that Magellan sells, this would be my third Unit by Magellen
I'm considering the Magellan 2200T, but I need a GPS that will do both North America and Europe. It looks like extra maps for other regions can be added to the 2200T (or why would they have a 'Region' icon), but the manual and Magellan website seem extremely unforthcoming about whether this model is compatible with extra maps and whether they sell them. Do you know whether this is an option for me or do I need to look at a different make and/or model?
Thanks
thanks a lot for an excellent review
I bought my 2200T at costco over the weekend for 300.
It works well so far.
I am forced to use the adhesive disc because Minnesota doesn't allow things on windshield.
I will keep posted if something comes up
cheers
Harshad
I have asked this question over and over, and can not get a straight answer. Can you make your own route using JUST city names, no addresses or poi's, with the 2200T?
Thanks,
Helmer
Thanks for all of the reviews.
I just returned to NY from Hawaii and used the 2200T on 5 different islands (Hilo, Maui, Kona, Kuai and Oahu). Bought at Costco for $299 Never any problems. I would say it's just as good as the factory GPS in 2003 Mercedes convertible (at a lot less cost). Found everything first time. No crashing. Really curious about how it compares to Nuvi 350 (for 395 at Walmart). Any thoughts on whether I should switch? I am not doing any complicated multi-destinations or things like that.
Bill
From many reviews above, a lot of cons states here for MRM2200T, such as craching frequently...... I just got this unit in Costco for $299 (a nice bargain product) last week and I did test it for many times. So far it works very well to me, no crashing at all. Two pros impressed me, longer battery life (up to 8 hrs, i.e. I can mount it any possible places in my car without plug-in power cord for a long trip) and excellent signal receiption (I can use this unit with good satellite signal even indoor). There is one thing I would like to mention that the unit I got is slightly different than the review pictures. I think Magellan is shipping this unit out with reset button at off position now (actually the new reset button is a pin-tip rubber button instead of a switch showed on the picture). Therefore, I have no problem to power it up at fisrt time. I am guessing that Magellan may fix some of issues for this unit recently. Anyway, it's so far so good to me but I will continue to test this unit to see if it's a one worthy to keep since I own this MRM2200T just over a week. BTW, Magellan released a brand new Maestro 4000 series recently and I am eager to see Fletch's review... Thanks
Has anybody tried adding the $49 crossover upgrade to a Magellan 2200T?
I too bought the 2200t at Costco. I was looking Nuvi 660 but at $299 I thought I'd give it the old 90 day try. This is my first GPS so I'm no expert. So far so good. One routing problem (put me in a neighborhood behind a local mall rather than at the mall) and one freak-out (the GPS lost me around the airport but found me once I took a turn). I'll be trying a road trip in 3 weeks for the ultimate test on keeping it but so far I'm leaning towards keeping it and enjoying the great price.
Haven't had any crashing problems and the reset button is different as a previous poster noted.
I am looking for a GPS with traffic alerts. Would you recommend the 2200T for $299 and then spend another $99 for the traffic kit or would a different GPS be a better value?
With respect to the Magellan Roadmate 2200T, a new firmware update is available on the Magellan web site (May 2007). Make sure to download this firmware. It is free of charge (after you register the unit) and adds live update traffic software to the unit. You would have to buy the live-update accessory of course. The new firmware also resolves some of the problems (not all) that have been mentioned on this web site. I think the 2200T is a great unit for the price. I have been researching GPS units for over one month and feel I know a lot about them. You will not find a perfect unit. Each unit has its pros and cons. You have to decide what it is you are willing to live with or without and then make your decision accordingly. It would be great if Magellan or Garmin would create the PERFECT GPS unit. That will never happen I think. Therefore, decide what you want in a GPS unit and what you are willing to live with (and without) and then make your purchase decision accordingly.
2200 T OR 3000T
WHITCH IS NEWER/BETTER
THIS MY FIRST GPS LOOKING FOR PRICE RANGE $300
NEED INFO THANKS
I bought the 2200T last week from Costco for $299 and today I got $50 price adjustment because it's now only $249. So far the unit is good except one weird thing in routing: when I choose "shortest time", it sometimes tells me to go to an exit when I am on freeway and if I do so it then immediately tells me to go back to the freeway. It's like a shortcut but not a wise one. However, when I choose "most use of freeway", there seems no such problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
I purchased the 2200T from Newegg.com; received it yesterday. I had done many hours of research and felt that I was taking a gamble on the 2200T due to bad reviews. I liked the Garmin nuvi350 but did not like the shorter batter life and flip antenna, the antenna would be a break hazard as I had planned to keep the GPS in my briefcase. I had read a review that suggested getting the firmware update. The 2200T did have a lock up problem with firware version 1.16 (supplied with the unit) but I downloaded/installed version 1.72, now the unit no longer freezes or reboots. The 2200T is very intuitive and performs nicely in my tests today; it is accurate and fast and feels rugged. NICE !!
I purchased mine about two weeks ago. I had read all the reviews I could find and knew the limitations. For my needs, I find it surpasses my old Roadmate 700. I love the portability, the battery operation and the similar 700 features. I had initial issues with the firmware (re-boots and hang ups), but downloaded and installed the latest version from Magellan’s website and the GPS has worked flawlessly since. I do SAR work with my dog in Virginia. I rely on my older Magellan handheld Sport Trak for work in the field. It interfaces with mapping software on my laptop for after task reports, so I have no requirement to change to anything else. The Crossover has augmented my toolkit with the ability to quickly get me out to the area I’m to search. Its tracking ability allows easier off road navigation to locate a search sector and for returning to base afterwards, something my old Roadmate could not handle. Sounds elementary, but at two in the morning with no moon, it’s wonderful. No more guessing which fire trail I drove down. I would rate it a four out of five star for my purposes. Sure would be sweet if Magellan would equip it with the UTM NAD 27 coordinates that we SAR folks use. I’d then buy another for my pack! Good piece of equipment.
Thank you Fletch for your very detailed reviews. This is the best GPS resource I have found in weeks of searching! A big thanks also to others who posted about the Costco price.
I have been doing some heavy research for a GPS unit to use both on my motorcycle and in my vehicles. I seriously considered the Zumo 450/550 line, but I just couldn't get around the price of those units. I found that the 2200T does just about everything the Zumo 450 does (except play music while navigating) at almost half the price. I ride an 'adventure' motorcycle and am inclined the take trails or fire roads from time to time. I found the CrossoverGPS (2500T) and liked it because of the topo map being included, but I couldn't find that unit for less than about $360 online. I decided getting the 2200T for $249 at Costco and buying the $49(?) crossover upgrade was the best deal for me. Fortunately I was able to demo the 2200T as well as some Nuvi350/550 units at some local stores. I actually found the 2200T to respond more quickly and is more intuitive (for me) to operate than the Garmins.
Thanks again, guys.
I just ordered this from buy.com for $219 after a bunch of coupons and rebates. As some others have said, I feel like I'm taking a risk. But I also feel it has a lot of potential, and if the firmware upgrade does the trick it can be a really stellar device...especially for $219! Speaking of the firmware upgrade, does Magellan post a list of bugs it is supposed to fix...or does anyone know off hand?
Magellan 2200T Crossover Software What One Will Work ?
I Just Bought The Magellan 2200T
At BJ'S This Week For $249
Need To Know Some Crossover Info
Does anybody have any info on whats included with the
RoadMate 2200T thats refurbished. When I asked newegg they would not say what else you would get with the unit such as usb, software ect.
I bought a refurb unit from Buy.com. It came with USB, mounting hardware, CD-ROM, quick start guide, car charger, and AC charger (which I thought did not come with the device). I think it comes with everything the new unit comes with, plus mine came with additional charger.
I purchased a 2200T in February and have been frustrated ever since that time. I purchased it because it was advertised as being crossover upgradable. I wanted to use it hunting and on the water. Magellan's so called technical support is a joke. I have been told every month since February that the crossover upgrade will be released in a month. Here it is June and my GPS is sitting on a shelf unusable. I also feel like an idiot for I paid almost $400 for it back then and now you can buy it for half that amount and it is not even worth that to me. Sorry, but I don't have much respect for Magellan at this point.
Bob
Based on your very through review I purchased the 2200T today at Costco. My initial reaction is great ... it was just what I wanted for a easy entry into GPS navigation. My one complaint is that is is not compatable with the Mac OS10 operating system. Therefore I cannot download the new firmware onto my computer. I am really surprised a company of the size of Megellan does not recognize the large number of Apple users that they are neglecting.
I just purchase my 2200T and I noticed that my player doesn't have an equalizer icon as shown in the manual. I calle their customer service and say said that because equalizer had some bugs, they decide to take it out. Does anybody aware of this and if you do have an equalizer is the sound really better than as is? Right now for listening, it really sucks. Thanks.
Costo is selling the Magellan Roadmate 2200T for $219.99 (starting 06/23/2007)
I just purchased the 2200T about 2 weeks ago, and I have to say that I'm loving it. I can wait for the crossover upgrade, since I already have a small GPS I use for Geocaching. It's a fantastic product that does a great job with directions to any locations. I purchased it from NewEgg.com for $215.99 after rebates.
For anyone who wants to know what the refurb. unit comes with- everything the normal one comes with, but ALSO an AC adapter.
My top candidate was the Nuvi350, but I wasn't sold on the price. After reading this review, I got the 2200T at Costco (AC adapter was included). What a deal! It came with Firmware version 1.62 and I haven't experienced any of the bugs mentioned in this review. Now, at $219, nothing can come close.
I originally purchased the TomTom One hoping that the new TeleAtlas maps would help, but after reading the recent TomTom One XL review on this site decided to take it back (maps are good now, but NAV engine is still sub-par).
In any case, I just bought the 2200T at Costco for $219.95. I've only had it a few days and the NAV system seems to work fine. I did notice when playing with the system inside my house that when I'm in the Map mode, I get inconsistent results on the touch screen. Specifically, there is a community college nearby that shows up as a POI. When I tap on the POI icon usually the infomation for that POI pops up. However, when I repeatedly tapped on the icon, I noticed that the pop-up did not come up each time, although the speaker made the little "click" sound each time. In all other modes, entering data for navigation, setting settings (volume, brightness, etc.), the touch screen does what it's suppose to every time.
I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this. Again, it's only in the Navigation/map mode.
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. No one else has mentioned this, but on these newer 2200Ts, if you tap on the Speaker Icon in the map view, instead of just muting the speaker (as was the case in earlier models), the full volume control pops-up. This is a big improvement on earlier models as you had to go three menus deep to get to the actual volume control from the map view.
I got my 2200T for 3 days now, everything works fine. Overall a decent job in navigating. Not bad for the price-Hertz's rental of Neverlost is $10/day, so if you use it for 30 days, it pays for itself.
I live in L.A., so it prompts me to reroute all the time during slow traffic, especially on the freeways. Not really a serious problem once you learn to ignore it. I can see how the traffic kit can come in handy when used with the automatic reroute. I may not want to reroute due to heavy traffic, but if the back-up is caused by an accident, I may think otherwise.
Also, the unit has difficulty distinguishing if you are on the freeway or on streets adjacent to the freeway, especially when I know my way around and decide to take a different parallel route, but again, GPS is really for people who don't know their way and as long as you follow the instruction, it will get you to where you want to go.
Overall a decent investment. It doesn't come close to having someone who knows the way sitting next to you, but then which GPS does!
Just wanted to post an update on what I thought was touch screen problem in the Nav/Map mode.
Turns out the touch screen has a fairly high resolution and my finger was apparently overlapping/missing the "hot spot" on occasion. I took the rounded end of the ballpoint pen (the plastic cap, not the metal roller ball) I use (which is much smaller than my finger tip) and used that to tap on the icon. Now I get 100% response.
I also downloaded and installed the ver. 1.72 firmware (the unit I just bought from COSTCO had 1.62 on it). Installation went very smoothly. Can't really comment on all the enhancements, but it did add all the user menus for the Traffic Alert subscription, if you care to buy it.
I also picked up the 2200t @ Costco for $219, and have found that this unit fits on a mount that TSS-Radio sells for the Sirius radio by just slightly elongating the mounting holes. This bracket fits under the instrument panel trim in my Silverado, and really works great. I may get one of these for my Infiniti also, as I really prefer it over the windshield mount.
So I have a nuvi 360 ( Costco $429) and a 2200T ( Costco $219) - One of them has to go back. It looks like the 2200T wins on price and Smartdetour. The nuvi has better routing and more POIs. Is the better routing worth twice the money? The most important thing for me is text to speech, ease of use and the ability to trust the device. I also like the idea of Smartdetour but trusting the route is more important. I really don't want to spend the extra money, but I will if it makes sense.
Hey, the review is very informative. I just bought the 2200T for $220 (can't beat that price) and i was looking for online documentation when I came across your review. I haven't actually used it yet (still charging) but thought I'd write and tell you that it was really funny seeing all the screenshots you put up because I live right by the intersection of main and south street and work right off of exit 8...my boss lives in Bridgewater!Small world huh?
Hi, Fletch. Gosh you write wonderful reviews. I have been reading reviews for three months and decided I wanted a new Garmin Nuvi 650. After I came down, I looked in my wallet and purchased a Magellan RoadMate 2200T.
I got it yesterday and had trouble this morning updating the firmware. A call to the support center brought all the help I needed. The guy was a bit difficult to understand (probably in India) but he was able to guide me through to success.
I have only one problem. I cannot find my home address. When the farm road comes up, it lists 2000 to 3999 and I live in the 6000's. I have tried everything I can think of beyond calling the tech back.
I purchased this at buy.com where I get a lot of my electronic stuff refurbished. I have been buying refurb products for over ten years and haven't got one dud. We will see abut the 2200T.
Thank you for your great reviews. They lead me to this purchase.

I just bought the unit from costco for 219.00. Great price and the firmware upgrade (1.72)was smooth. The website tells you what the upgraded firmware fixed...it also says bugs in the routing was corrected.
From website:
Improved routing & explication:
Automatic or Manual detour function fixed
Shortest Time Routing to Bay Area routes via Grapevine
Missed Guidance Maneuver fixed
Routing method bug fixed
Increased Reliability:
Unit freezing issues when changing zoom level fixed
Unit resets after panning the map fixed
Upgraded address selection capability:
Search and routing by zip code fixed
Canadian addresses routing issues fixed
Map refresh issue after selecting an exit POI fixed
Street name selection process in Previous City fixed
User Interface:
Trip computer is information display fixed
Arrival message timing corrected
Active satellite icon display fixed
Custom POI's enabled
Traffic Compatibility:
Firmware update includes compatibility with the Magellan TrafficKit (sold separately) No further software update required to add the Magellan TrafficKit accessory.
(I havent had a long trip yet....but rerouting appears to be fairly quick. The display is not as nice as the Garmin. But its over 120.00 cheaper than the c530, can't beat the price. Its also smaller than the c530).
Oh and if you bought it from costco you can return the unit at any time even a year later...costco is great. they said they just had the last shipment, Not ordering anymore.
by the way...great review.
I've had the 2200T for about 3 mo. Does what it's supposed to do very well. In CA you can't mount on the w'shield. I have a Prius & found the round bottom of the mounting unit fits perfectly in the round cupholder...good viewing position and no direct sun = better contrast. I have had only one freeze and that was fixed by PUSHING the reset button...there is no slide I/O on the newer 2200T.
Well, I've had the 2200t for two months now. I am still very happy with its performance. I installed the v1.72 update the day I got it but have had some sporadic failures to maintain satellite signals after being in use in very open wilderness for several hours. This required me to reset the unit to correct. Occasionally the unit will also not update the current street name after making a turn while navigating. It will call the current street by the previous street name but will otherwise continue to give correct location and route directions. Cancelling and then re-starting the route fixes this problem when it happens. Aside from real world variations in the Navteq mapping, the only other problem I had was a failure of the DC charger. Magellan quickly sent me a replacement at no cost and didn't even verify my purchase date.
It would be really nice if the unit would accept Lat/Lon coordinates for routing or even mapping purposes. I think the crossover units will at least allow you to map a location that way (I hope).
All this being said, I've decided to upgrade to the CrossoverGPS. I have concerns about when, if ever, the crossover upgrade will be available for the 2200t. I bought it from Costco for $249, before the price dropped to $219. Now I can get the CrossoverGPS from Overstock.com for $323 shipped to my door. With the savings of not paying tax for the new unit, I'm able to get the CrossoverGPS for the same price as a 2200t with the still unavailable $49 crossover upgrade, plus the better graphics that were just released for the CrossoverGPS!
I hope this helps others in their decision.
Just bought 2200T yesterday at Costco $219; window mount, car charger, AC charger. Updated to 1.72 as soon as I got home. So far used only 1/2 day, without any problems (no lock ups mentioned by others). Programmed in address to my work - not sure I like the route it chose, will check out tomorrow what it does when I deviate from the route given. Will also be going on a road trip next week (downtown Charlotte NC) and am anxious to see how it does on one-way streets and getting to my location. So far, for the price, it is a nice little unit that does the basics for those of us not hyped on getting a bunch of bells and whistles.
I had a question for ryan who said he bought refurbished from buy.com. Do the refurbs carry any warranty?
Bill - I just spoke with Magellan tech support regarding the warranty issue among others. The refurbs come with a 90 day warranty. Their standard units come with a 1 yr warranty, however they will double this to 2 years (presumably for free) if you have a AAA membership.
Others - I am debating between the 2200T and 3000T for the same money. I gather that the 3000T has more POIs (6M v 1.5M), does route optimization, has actual buttons (maximizing screen area), and has internal memory for storing custom POIs. However, the 2200T is a bit more current, a bit quicker, waterproof, and offers the Crossover conversion (eventually). Are there any other meaningful differences? Are there actual speed and routing differences when both firmwares and map databases are current? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Bought a refurb unit through Buy.com and it came with a 90 days manufacturer warranty. Looks and feels new to me. Took it to a long trip to the Smoky mountain and it worked like a charm. I noticed that on certain routes it didn't announced the street names to turn to, although the map showed the turns properly. May be cause the streets were new.
I updated the firmware to 1.72 as well and encountered one problem afterwards. When you want to switch from the music or picture viewers to the navigation, it is taking 15-20 seconds to switch. Once in the navigation mode it is working fine with no delays.
I contacted the support via web and they got back fairly quickly with a fix.
The detour function is great. I was stuck on I-75 (near Cleveland) due to construction and hit the detour option and it took me through the alternate route (3-4 miles longer) but took me out of the jam.
Overall, the unit is very good and you can't beat the price compared to similar option units from Garmin ot TomTom.
Does anyone know if you can upgrade the 2200t with Magellan CrossoverGPS Firmware 2.14?
Well, I tried to upgrade to 2.14, and it wouldn't let me. Not sure why as I thought the hardware and firmware of the 2200T and the CrossoverGPS were the same.
This was one of the best reviews on this GPS system I have ever read! You provide somuch information better than the company it's self. I understand that the support is lousy and is of very little use I bought this re-furburished I am now awaiting delivery. How much of a difference is there between refurb and new? Thank you so much for an outstanding review! (applause)
gordog,
The Roadmate 2200T has to be upgraded for crossover, they finally have it release so you can purchase an unlock key from their site.
JoRobin,
If you haven't got yours yet, I would say the re-furbs are about the same as new. I think this is because it has taken Magellan so long to release the crossover upgrade so everyone was returning them almost unused.
I mainly just wanted to point out that the Crossover upgrade for the Roadmate 2200T is finally out.
Great info everyone. I'm pondering the 2200T and the Garmin 260 (both have text-to-speech).
I need something very accurate. I'm going on a trip to Orlando where I have never driven before.
Anyone tested these two units I described above?
Hey, just wanted to post up a thank you to the commenters and the reviewer. Very informative. I just purchased this unit on a whim from newegg.com. They have refurbished units for under $100. I figured with a name brand that I couldn't go wrong for that price. This review makes me think that not only did I not go wrong, but that it is a very good starter unit for my wife and I.
ABSOLUTE RIPOFF. I'm 20 miles from my destination & it announces I've arrived. Cust. Srvs. is in India & you have to wait sometimes more than 1 hr to be connected then you can't understand what the person says. Streets are often omitted & directions horrendous. Cust. Srvs. offers lip service only. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
I am wondering if anyone tried the updates and if so is it worth getting.
I am pleased with the unit, but often find that newer streets are not listed.
I think the initial reaction is great. The unit is very detailed but I didn't get a SD card with the initial purchase. What a rip-off!
81 bucks at geeks
I bought a 200T and was a OEM unit.
Did not come with a CD.
I was on the Magellan web-site.
Found all kinds of d/l software.
Except the CD that allows transfer of pics/music.
Where can I get it or download ???
Thanks Doug
this GPS is dead, no updated maps for europe. it's a shame Magellan never gave map updates. here in ireland, new national roads, roundabouts & motorways makes my Gps 2200T totally useless.
Dont buy this if you are in Ireland!
After having my 2200T for a year and a half, and only using it in the Vehicle Nav Mode, we decided to try out geocaching and using some of the other functions. I was frustrated to find that my 2200T seems to have a flaw where it will absolutely refuse to remain in any mode except Vehicle Nav. I updated the firmware (a nightmare in itself, Magellan's website is broken), reset the thing many times, tried vaious forums, and nothing helped. Finally resigning myself to the fact that it would need to go back to Magellan for repairs, I looked for repair/shipping info on their website. The final straw was where I read there that "Magellan does not service products. For receivers returned after the warranty period or for damage not covered by the warranty, customers may purchase a new unit at a reduced cost or reconditioned unit also at a reduced cost."
They are on my blacklist now, and I will NEVER purchase another product from Magellan.
I have owned a Magellan 2200T for over 2 years now.
NO issues at all, any minor problems with the unit (occasional "crashes" where the unit would go back to navigation screen) were corrected with the last firmware update (1.70 ? 1.72?)
at the moment my only issue is that newer streets are not in my map, and Ill be fixing that when I get the map upgrade to the unit.
Im very pleased with the unit so far, it has taken me all over the USA.
