Comments for Garmin Releases Version 4.0 Firmware for c550

A few days ago Garmin posted updated firmware (version 4.0) for the StreetPilot c550. I've downloaded and installed the update, and I encountered no issues.

Changes made from version 3.30 to 4.00:

  • Added SMS / Text Message Support for compatible phones
  • Added support for reading messages with TTS voices
  • Added support for importing M3U playlists. Place M3U playlist in the same directory as your music. From the MP3 player, touch Browse -> Import Playlist. Touch the playlist you want to import, and the songs are loaded in that order.
  • Changed the safety camera alarm rate
  • Enable filtering of the Daylight Saving list based on time zone
  • Fixed Switch to button on active call page to be active
  • Modified to power off the unit when disconnected by computer while exiting from mass storage mode and restart the unit if the USB cable is pulled
  • Added support for Russian, Turkish, Slovak, and Estonian pre-recorded voices
  • Added Arizona time zone

Garmin recommends installing the update via their WebUpdater software. If you like the old-school method better, you can grab the file manually HERE.

I was told by Garmin tech support that the Blackberry Pearl 8100 is compatible with the SMS text to speech feature but I would like to know how this feature works. Anybody know what I'm supposed to do when an SMS comes in?

I didnt find anything new/fixed for GPS use of this update. Dont have BT phone (yet) and dont use lot MP3s.

Mika - safety camera alarm rate means the c550 now warns you more in advance when you approaching a speed camera. The daylight savings thing means you're only prompted about daylight savings if it applies to your time zone.

I am having problem with additional updates that webupdater offers. At the moment if offers many speech updates and red arrow. I have loaded those before, but it still does offer me same updates. Also for some reason I dont have red arrow at my C550. I dont know if there is limit how many wehicle icons can be loaded to unit.. Also it would be nice if c550 would show version information of speech files that are loaded to unit.

Dang! I was hoping this update would provide a way to delete phone numbers that I added to the cellphone phone book through bluetooth. Oh well...

The update has messed up the random play in the mp3. Before you would have been able to pick the starting track in an album or list of other tracks to play - now the update makes your first choice the only track to play.

Kind of ackward when you don't want to listen to the same song when playing random.

Wonder what these mean..

Update was 'intresting'.. It did end up to blue screen at C550.. and I did think that my 550 did crash.. But I did wait couple minutes with blue screen.. Nothing happend.. Power off->power on.. and it did work ok. But that blue screen and nothing happening, did scare hell out of me. Still try to think that its not Windows OS.. No BSOD's to C550 please.. :)
