Verdict: Good, But Not Great

Magellan RoadMate 6000T

A few weeks ago I completed my review of the Magellan RoadMate 3000T. Now that Magellan has officially released the 3000T's more expensive counterpart, the RoadMate 6000T, I have completed my in-depth review.

The Magellan RoadMate 6000T is the latest installment in Magellan's long and successful series of RoadMate GPS devices. The 6000T is their high-end model, offering features like traffic, Bluetooth, mp3, photo, multi-destination routing and more.

You mention in your review under the bluetooth section you can access your address book. Where you able to transfer your mobile phones address book to 6000T?

"Once the phone is connected to the 6000T, you have access to your address book"

Scott - I wasn't able to transfer my address book, only connect to the phone and browse the list. Same thing functionally, but slower than if it was sync'ed.

I have one that I am sending back in the morning. The routing is not reliable and cannot be adjusted to fit your preferences--e.g. going around a city instead of through it. The clock drifts terribly and eventually has it setting night mode during the day. The worst problem is its repeated locking up so it has to be reset to be able to access the main menu. Also there is no way to save a route that has been driven so you can duplicate it in the future rather than relying on its quirky routing algorithms. It can't distinguish between dirt roads and paved and has a bizarre tendancy to take side roads that are obviouly not the best route. I would hate to depend on the auto routing in an area for which I did not have a good paper map and some local knowledge.

CAN THE 6000T RECEIVE INFORMATION FROM A PC PROGRAM FOR MULTIPLE DESTINATIONS. I'M A REALTOR AND BEING ABLE TO SET UP THE ROUTING AND UPLOAD FROM MY PC WOULD BE A REAL TIME SAVER.

Rob - You can upload custom POI's from the PC, but I don't believe you can do routes. Hope that helps,

Fletch,
I can't find the Multi-destination. Where can you do that? Even though it's confusing, I'd like to try it out. Also, my battery lasts about 2 hours tops and I don't even have a memory card for music/photos. Just navigation. Do you think I should return it? Thanks, Stephanie

Hey! One more question: when I press the volume button down (not side to side) it does not restate the directions. I'm concerned I have a faulty unit because the volume sometimes fades out and I have to turn it all the way down and then all the way up to get it back again. Return for a new one?

Thanks!

Stephanie -
Before returning your MRM 6000T, I'd do the following:
Step 1: On the RoadMate, press ++--+-
this will bring up the "hidden menu". From there you can perform a hard reset (reset for first use).
After the unit resets, if it's still acting wacky, return it.
Hope that helps,

Hey Fletch,
Reset didn't fix wackiness. I'll try to return it today. Of course I have another question: I use POIs quite often, but I noticed that most of the time, it pulls up POIs that are 20 miles away skipping those that I know are nearby. How do I solve that? Do I have to buy a memory card and install TOOLS? Thanks again.

Bought Unit as a gift. Never used GPS before. CD's were missing from the box. I called technical support and they refused to send me the CD's without faxing them a proof of purchase. I explained that this was a gift and that it was 7PM on a Friday night> I offered to give them the serial number. Interestingly I told them I bought the unit at Best Buy. The person told me that when you buy from a retailer they discount the price (I paid 599 plus 84 dollars for the 4 year warrenty) and that they are not responsible if parts are missing and i should get the missing parts from the retailer. I will never deal with this company again. Horrible Customer service. They should be ashamed of themselves. Best Buy will not be getting a 15 percent restocking fee from me either.

I saw the 6000T on sale for $497 at Radio Shack on 1/10/07. I went into the store to compare the 2200T and the 6000T. I asked if they had a 6000T in stock. The sales clerk said the item had been discontinued and none were available in the district. Since the 3000T was discontinued a few months ago, I guess I'm not surprised. Does anybody know if the 2200T is the "replacement" for the 6000T or is there another model to be introduced in the coming weeks?

First GPS - love it! The traffic functions work pretty well here in the DC area but I hate the sloppy FM antenna across the windshield. Are there other alternatives?

Thanks!

As long as the FM signal is strong enough, you can just leave the FM antenna rolled up as it was out of the box. I have it tied up with the original cable tie, and it still work.

Does anyone know if the Magellan 6000T has a feature whereby you can point to a section on the street and it will give you the address?

Thanks!

the unit works fine. BUT i purchased it only after confirming with customer service at least twice and on their web site at the time, that the european maps COULD be unlocked. after asking customer servuce the cost to unlock several times and getting no response, i should have known. now they say there are no european maps to unlock. i'll never buy from this company again.

K. Muhl - you have to buy the Europe-specific version. There are two different product SKUs. One for North America and a different one for Europe.

Like K, Muhl, I purchased a Roadmate 3000T after reading that European maps were available to unlock for a fee. Nothing was mentioned about having to buy a second unit. I'm now trying to exchange it for a Garmin Nuvi, which does allow purchase of European maps. No more Magellans for me!!
