Comments for Lies TomTom Support Has Told Me

You know, I’ve made no secret of the fact that I feel TomTom’s US support is in need of some serious improvement. Over the past few months, I’ve been compiling a list of various ridiculous things the support reps over at TT have told me:

  • Your call is important to us
  • Someone will call you back today
  • You cannot save your current location, only a valid street address
  • No one else minds us emailing them an .exe file
  • No new windshield mount has been released, but we can send you a replacement original mount
  • TomTom's isn't selling the GO 910 yet because they're waiting until a new mount is developed
  • Blackberry is unsupported for use via Bluetooth
  • The GPS signal does not carry the time, you have to set the local time on the GPS unit itself. There’s “no way” to get the time just from the satellite signal.
  • The GO 910 isn’t “officially” released yet, which is why traffic, weather, and other PLUS services don’t work yet in North America

TomTom – customer service really needs to improve. It’s kind of a black eye for such an innovative company...

Figures (to above statements). I found another reason to not like the TomTom GO 910 (well the inards at the most), I was at a store today that had the GO 910 on demo display, guess what?, it appeared to be looping streaks and "grain" on the display making it almost inoperable, in all that, I think I heared a sound that sounded like a hard drive issue. On yournav.com, some member posted that TomTom is re-inventing the GO 910 to be better among other things. Let's hope it's true and they get thier act together. Customer service in general these days over the phone seems to suck, period. It has for me for the majority of companies I call, which doesn't include GPS Manufactueres per se' except TomTom.

I tried following address
Plainsboro, NJ 08536 to Canada St, Lake George, NY
TomTom 910 : 4 hrs 40 minutes
Garmin 550C : 4:55 hrs
AAA site: 3:40 hrs
Expedia 3:57 hrs
-----------------------
Using AAA I reached my destination in 3:30 hrs. I think all of GPS system are bad because they use only one system Navtech etc.
AAA & Expedia uses some 4 to 5 sources.

Please give your comment on this.

R Mohnot – there are currently two major mapping data providers: Navteq and TeleAtlas. In general, TeleAtlas is more complete for Europe, and Navteq is better for North America. TomTom uses TeleAtlas. Garmin and Magellan use Navteq (as does mapquest, yahoo maps, google maps, and msn maps). So while it is true that there is generally only two sets of maps available, there are variables that will change how a particular unit will route you. First, is the unit you’re using loaded with the most current maps? Second, the algorithms that determine what your route should be are different between Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom (and sometimes different within the same company between individual GPS units). For example, a given unit might not correctly identify that a particular street is closed after 5pm, even though the mapping data correctly indicates it, and then route you into a closed road. AAA might be optimizing their routes based on input from customers, but there’s definitely variances in routing logic between gps units, even if they share the same mapping data.

Mapquest uses a blend of NAVTEQ and TeleAtlas to get the best layer possible.

I have a TomTom One XL 330, purchased about 6 months ago. I just received information about purchasing new updated maps. Nowhere can I find any information about how to tell if I have the latest Map set. Trying to get through their Customer service, results in not being able to open that web page. It would be nice to know how to determine the status of the installed maps. I am quite satisfied with the operation of my unit. I would also like to tell them to pronounce the name of my Street, "Flotilla".
