Just got off the phone with TomTom Support. Surely there must be a way to save a current location as a favorite in my TomTom GO 910. I figured it must just be buried somewhere in a non-intuitive place. To my surprise, TomTom Support sez there’s no way view your current location and save it. You can only enter an address manually. Saving your current location is very useful for a number of reasons:
- Sometimes you do not know the exact street address of your location, but you want to save it so you can return.
- Sometimes places do not have an official street address, so you’d like to be able to just save the coordinates (e.g. a flee market, fruit stand on the side of the road, etc.)
- Sometimes the TeleAtlas maps are just wrong, and say you have arrived at your destination, even though the correct destination is a half a mile up the road. So you’d like to be able to save the corrected location.
TomTom – PLEASE, this is a very basic GPS function, and one that both your major competitors (Magellan and Garmin) support. How about some firmware update love and drop in this much needed feature (while you’re at it, can you also add the “Clear Route” button to the homepage, and add support for more cell phones? Oh, and let’s not forget about fixing that horrible windsield mount).
UPDATE: Apparrently you CAN in fact, save your current location, despite TomTom support saying it's not possible. Here's how you do it: Menu -> Add Favorite -> Next Page -> GPS Position
Thanks to one of our readers for submitting the tip. Hey TomTom -- *paleeze* do some customer support training - these guys are killing you.

You can add your current location as a favorite. Menu -> Add Favorite -> Next Page -> GPS Position.
If you want to see the current address instead go to Menu -> Next Page -> Browse Map, then tap on your location on the street. The street name will be shown along with the house number closest to where you clicked.
Garmin does it 2 buttons no problems. BUT maps BITE for any accuracy.
This is a great tip - thanks! This is just another example of TomTom's absolutely horrible, HORRIBLE support. No one over there seems to have any clue. If TomTom wants to compete with the big boys (Garmin and Magellan), they're going to have hire a new QA team, and improve support.
Thanks for the great tip on how to save your current location!

I just got my TomTom One a couple days ago, and only got to play with it yesterday a little bit. I was in the parking lot at my work, and saved the location using the above method. Then when I was off at lunch, I tried to have the GPS route me back to work, and it just wouldn't do it. Maybe because I was in the parking lot when I added it as a favorite, and not on the road? I know my older Garmin V, would have routed me to as close as it could get. It seems like the TomTom didn't even want to try?
I don't know. I need to play with it more.
Thanks for this information. I have been searching for this for a while! Man, you would think that Tom Tom would make information like that more readily available. Geez. Thanks again, have a good one. Wish me luck programming this puppy. :)
I am doing PhD in computer security field. My subject is related to GPS system. I have question plz:
1> Is the position address has the same co-ordinate at any time?
2> How TomTom does works? I need to know if:
- TomTom receive a signal from sattelite and re-send it to the server in some where. Then server answer where is this location?
or
- the relation is only between the TomTom and the sattalite and nothing for server?
or
- what?????
3> Do you have references or videos about what is happing exactly when TomTom send a request to sattalite?
I think the bigger problem with my Tom Tom One (130s) is that it can't tell me what city/state I'm in. It can only tell me the address, so if I'm driving through a neighborhood, I can't tell where I am. I think the newer ones have a "Where Am I" icon, but mine doesn't. Really a drag... my 10 year old PocketPC GPS can tell me this.
My first GPS experience was a marine unit proposed to take the place of my Loran C. It didn't have half the features of my off brand, bargain basement,Loran C plotter, but it did have a MOB (man overboard) button to mark the spot or current location and add it to the way points. That collection of way points could be named, saved as a trip and later recalled and run either backward or forward. So a trip to a fishing spot or wreck or other POI could be saved and revisited. While old trips aren't so important to save the single way point is. Stores in shopping centers aren't generally shown only the road that goes by is detailed, but the GPS plotter is only an overlay so the position is shown in a block of color with no detail. But the position is known nevertheless. Somewhere in my TomTom I saw a choice labeled "Where Am I", but when I needed it I couldn't find it again. It must be buried in another menu somewhere. What's so hared about bringing it up front sa as to find it easily and quickly. A car doesn't need an MOB button like a boat or ship would but a switch somewhere close the top of a menu would be nice.
