TomTom GO 910 Windshield Mount

Well, after a few weeks of use, the included windshield mount finally broke completely on me and separated into 2 peices. As mentioned in the TomTom GO 910 Review, prior to breaking completely, the mount had been doing a rather poor job of keeping the 910 secure; when driving, the mount would droop down until the 910 was facing a 45% down-angle.

TomTom's support department has assured me a new mount is in the mail, and an improved mount is "in the works". In fact, the TomTom support rep told me that the mount is "a known issue that TomTom is working out, and the main reason why TomTom isn't selling the 910 directly yet." Hmmm... Doesn't really speak well for TomTom...

Even with the mount problem would you still recommend this GPS?

Yes – even with the crappy windshield mount, I would buy the TomTom GO 910. At the heart of the 910 is the SiRF III gps receiver. The 910 performs so much better than anything else I’ve used, that I still gave it the editor’s choice despite the poor mount (it even gets a strong signal indoors). A few things worth mentioning regarding the mount:

1. TomTom Support says this is a known issue and they will exchange any broken mounts
2. TomTom will be releasing an improved mount soon

So I say go ahead and buy it, but be gentle with the mount until TomTom releases the new mount.

I had one of the bad mounts and had them send me a replacement. So far so good. It's much more solid than the old one and works great now. Looks like they got the mount issues fixed. If anyone is looking for the best car GPS you can get I would say it's the 910 without a doubt.

i'm on device #2. both have failed perhaps b/c the device shorts when sitting on the charger. tomtom told me a solution is in the works tomorrow (9/21/06). third times a charm?

Still, an awesome GPS device when it works....
