TomTom is starting to release HD Traffic enabled GPS devices in North America, and the GO 2505 M LIVE is the company's first such device.
So what exactly is HD Traffic, and should you care? Read on.
In a nutshell, HD Traffic is TomTom's enhanced live traffic offering. They take real-time traffic data, combine it with historical driving information (IQ Routes), as well as anonymous data from other drivers, and several other components, and, at least in theory, offer drivers the most accurate traffic awareness available. How well this will actually work remains to be seen, but TomTom is already making some pretty impressive claims. Compared to standard TMC-powered traffic service, TomTom says HD Traffic covers roughly 12 times more road in the US.
In addition to HD Traffic, the GO 2505 M LIVE will include weather, fuel prices, and Google local search.
Available in the Spring at a suggested retail price of $350, the unit will include a free trial subscription to TomTom's LIVE services, after which you'll have to subscribe if you want to keep using them. The 2505 M LIVE will operate on AT&T's data network.
