Ford Motor Company thinks GPS technology could be used to alert drivers to pending danger, and help avoid accidents altogether. Official findings from the joint Ford-Auburn University research project will be presented next week, but company officials say researchers believe they have found a way to use GPS to act as an early warning detection system.
Algorithms have been developed that combine data from vehicle sensors with GPS receiver data, allowing on-board computers to generate predictive models that can calculate a vehicle's roll angle, sideslip, and velocities under various driving conditions.
No word yet on if/when the technology will actually find its way into a production vehicle, but the research looks promising.
The research findings will be presented next week at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' International Conference on Systems, Man and Cybernetics in San Antonio, Texas, Oct. 11-14.
