23. TomTom Services

TomTom Services

TomTom Services is an online subscription service that lets your GO 930T access real-time traffic, weather, fuel prices, and more. TomTom periodically adds new services. For a full list of current services, visit http://www.tomtom.com/services.

Note that RDS-based traffic information is received via the included antenna. TomTom's Traffic Service is also available, but requires a Bluetooth phone to download traffic data.

Setup Wireless Data Connection

In order to use TomTom's Services, you'll need a compatible Bluetooth enabled cell phone. Once paired with the GO 930T, the phone must be powered on, within a coverage area, and located within 15 feet of the GPS.

Compared to Garmin's MSN Direct equipped 12v power adapter (which provides power as well as various online services, including Traffic), TomTom's Services feel complex to setup, and require additional hardware (a cell phone).

  • TomTom Weather - A free service that displays local weather forecast information
  • TomTom Buddies - Provides instant messaging and location sharing information between you and other TomTom GO owners
  • TomTom Safety Cameras - Warns drivers when approaching a known speed trap
  • Fuel Prices - For $14.95 per year, this service lets you see local fuel price information, and find the cheapest gas.

24. Traffic

Main Menu 3 of 3

Traffic information is available on the GO 930T either as a TomTom Service, which requires a compatible Bluetooth-enabled cell phone in order to download updates, or by adding an optional TMC Traffic Receiver (sells for around $100 online). The optional TMC traffic receiver includes a 1 year subscription, after which you'll need to subscribe.

To view traffic information, tap "TomTom Traffic" from the Main Menu, Page 3.

Limit Traffic Updates?
Figure 144: Limit Traffic Updates?

The first time you launch TomTom Traffic, you are asked if you want to limit how often Traffic is updates.

If you are using TomTom's Traffic Service via a connected Bluetooth cell phone, this setting allows you to limit the frequency with which the GO 930T will download new traffic updates. This is essentially a money saving feature aimed at controlling data usage on your cell phone.

Tap "YES" to specify an update interval, or tap "NO" to download new traffic updates as soon as they become available. If you've got an unlimited data plan, or are using the TMC traffic receiver, you should tap "NO" to ensure the most current traffic data possible.

  • Beep when traffic situation on route changes - enabled by default, the GO 930T beeps when a new traffic incident occurs along the current route
