Keeping your GPS's maps up-to-date is one of the most important thing you can do to ensure the best navigation performance possible. Current maps make sure your GPS knows where you are, where you're going, and also updates the POI (Points of Interest) database.
Garmin currently releases mapping updates every few months. Garmin's new nuMaps Lifetime subscription program lets you download up to 4 updates per year for the life of the nuvi GPS. That can add up to a significant savings, and will help make the device last for years to come.
Here's everything you need to know about Garmin's nuMaps, including how to buy, download, and install the updates onto your GPS.
UPDATE: Since this article was originally posted, you can now purchase the Garmin nuMaps Lifetime map subscription directly from Amazon.com
, and save about $25 in the process.

Important Note: If a map update is released within 60 days of purchasing your nuvi, Garmin will give you the update for free. Otherwise, you've got two options for buying map updates: individual, or nuMaps.
Individual map updates cost $70 each. Garmin's nuMaps Lifetime option lets you download up to 4 map updates per year for the life of the GPS.
NüMaps Lifetime is available in three different versions:
• North America ($119.99)
• Europe ($139.99)
• Transatlantic ($149.99)
Map updates include updated mapping data as well as Points of Interest (POI).
Note that you can only purchase a nuMaps Lifetime subscription for the map coverage that came pre-installed on your nuvi. So, for example, if your nuvi came with North American maps, you must buy the North American nuMaps, and cannot buy a transatlantic map update.
The subscription is tied to the device, so you can't spread the updates around multiple GPS's, or transfer the subscription if you get a new GPS. Still, for less than the cost of 2 individual map updates, you get quarterly map updates for as long as you own the GPS.

Complete the purchase process by following the on-screen prompts, then click Add to my device.
