The RoadMate 1430's maps of the US and Canada, as well as 6 million POIs are stored on the included 2GB SD memory card.

The cradle attaches to the windshield mount. The included mount doesn't supply power to the GPS, so you'll have to manually connect the 12v power cable to the RoadMate each time the unit is attached or removed from the cradle.

5. Installing the RoadMate 1430 in the Car

Swivel Mount, Attached to the Windshield

The RoadMate 1430 uses a new, re-designed windshield mount design that is both smaller and more effective at holding the GPS securely in place than previous Magellan windshield mounts.

First, determine where you'll want the GPS to reside on your windshield. In CA and MN it's only legal to mount a GPS on the left or right side of the windshield. Most users will probably want to mount the GPS in the lower-center portion of the windshield, as pictured above.

Press the base of the mount onto the windshield glass, and push the lever at the base of the mount all the way down until it snaps into place.

Next, line up the two tabs on the swivel mount with the holes on the back of the cradle, and push down until it locks into place.

Attaching the RoadMate to the Cradle

Align the tabs on the cradle to the indents on the bottom of the RoadMate, then swivel the cradle up until it snaps into place.

Loosen the two knobs to position the RoadMate into the desired viewing angle, then tighten the knobs again.

The windshield mount isn't powered, and the X-Y axis adjustment knobs aren't as flexible as the ball-and-socket style joints used on some other GPS devices. Still, the RoadMate's included vehicle mounting hardware is an improvement over previous windshield mounts from Magellan.

The windshield mount and cradle had no problem holding the GPS securely in place. There was no visible vibration in the mount, even when driving at highway speeds.
