Dash Express Hands-On Preview

6. Configuring WiFi Connectivity

Accessing the Settings Menu

Dash Express has an internal WiFi receiver. Although WiFi isn't required for basic navigation, it is required for downloading software updates, and is a convenient way to keep the device connected to My Dash website without having to physically connect to a PC.

To configure WiFi settings, tap "settings" from the main menu.

Scroll down the settings list and tap "manage WiFi"

Choose a Network to Configure

Dash Express can remember two encrypted WiFi network settings. For example, you could configure WiFi settings for your home and workplace. The device can additionally be configured to automatically connect to any open network (selected by default).

Enter the SSID Name

You'll need to know the exact name of the wireless network you're trying to connect to. Unfortunately, there's no way to browse for available networks. The names are case sensitive, so be sure to enter your wireless network name exactly. Tap "enter" once the name has been fully entered.

After entering the SSID wireless network name, Dash Express prompts you to enter the network password, then automatically attempts to connect to the network.

7. Dash Express' Map Screen

Dash Express 2D Map Screen

Dash's map screen is designed to emphasize traffic patterns, so the map has a softer color palette than most other GPS units.

When navigating to a destination, Dash's map screen can be toggled between 2D and 3D modes. Both modes display the highlighted route, current traffic conditions, the direction and distance of the next turn, and arrival time.

Dash Express 3D Map View

The 3D map view makes it easier to see upcoming turns and complex intersections, but can make traffic conditions more difficult to see. Some drivers will find it easier to view the 2D mode over the 3D mode, depending on your own preferences.

Dash Express Routes Screen
Figure 42: Dash Express Routes Screen

Once a destination address or POI has been entered, Dash Express calculates three routes to the target:

  • The first proposed route is the most direct route, and should be similar to the route a non traffic-enabled GPS would propose
  • The second route is an alternate route that shares no more than 75% in common with the first proposed route
  • The third suggested route follows the most direct route, just as the first proposed route does, but also avoids any adverse traffic conditions along the way, routing your car around the problem areas and then returning you to the original route

Traffic Ahead

Should traffic conditions change along the proposed route, an alert will appear, notifying you that a traffic situation exists along your current route. The estimated time of the delay is also displayed. Tapping "routes" displays alternate routes to avoid the traffic, or you can tap "close" to ignore the alert and continue along the current route.
