5. Mounting the Harman/Kardon 810 GPS in the Car

Attaching the Cradle to the Windshield

Before attaching the mount to the windshield, clean and dry the glass as well as the suction cup on the base of the mount.

To secure the mount in place, press the suction cup against the glass and push the lever down to lock it in place. Note that if you live a State or country that prevents you from mounting anything in the windshield, Harman/Kardon also provides an adhesive mounting disc for mounting the GPS on the dashboard instead of the windshield.

Connect the 12v charger to your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter.

Connect the mini-USB plug on the 12v charger to the right side of the mount.

The Harman/Kardon 810 is placed on the mount by aligning the bottom of the unit with the lip of the mount. From there you just rock the unit forward and it locks into place.

Mounting the Harman/Kardon 810 is easy and straight forward. To remove the unit from its mount, you just push the button on the bottom of the mount and the 810 easily pops out.

The Harman/Kardon looks great hanging from your windshield. It's definitely one of the nicest looking units I have come across.

Wireless Remote Mounting

The last thing to mount in your car is the wireless remote. You should put the remote somewhere that it is convenient for you to use blindly. I chose to attach mine right behind the stick shift. I would also recommend attaching it with Velcro versus using the disc that comes in the box. This is best if you plan to use the remote in more than one car. However, the mounting disc will also hold the remote securely.

6. Harman/Kardon's Map Screen

The 810's map screen displays the following information when navigating to a destination:

  1. Current Location - The current road and upcoming direction is displayed at the top of the screen
  2. Highlighted Route - The highlighted route is "painted", or marked, in green color
  3. Vehicle icon - A basic blue arrow marks your path.
  4. Upcoming Turn - Displays the distance to the next turn as well as the direction of the next maneuver.
  5. Distance & Time Remaining/ETA - This box displays how much time you have remaining and the distance to your destination. It also displays the estimated time of arrival.
  6. Back - This takes you to the last Navigation screen you were on. Most of the time it will take you to your route options screen.
  7. Source - Accesses the Main Menu (I'm not sure why they called this "Source" instead of Main Menu, which would have been better)
  8. View Mode - This toggles through three different display modes. First there is 3D mode, then 2D mode, the 2D North mode. The 2D North mode keeps the map always facing north.
  9. Zoom Out
  10. Zoom In
  11. Map Mode - This switches from locked in mode to free roam mode. Locked in keeps the map directly on your vehicle. Free Roam mode lets you use your finger to explore the map.

Overall the Harman/Kardon 810's screen is clean and easy to read. You aren't presented with an over abundance of information.

Drivers View

Everything is easily readable from the drivers seat. The screen looks great and the text is nice and big without being cluttered. The color scheme of the screen looks great and nothing on the screen is distracting. I actually prefer the look of this screen over the TomTom and the Magellan, although Garmin's screen is less cluttered then the 810 and easier to read.
