Garmin is updating its popular nuvi line, releasing new high-end, mid-range, and entry level models. Read on for all the details and hands-on photos of Garmin's newest GPS units.

Garmin's nuvi 880 is the new top-of-the-line nuvi and features full voice recognition support, allowing users to enter addresses, search for POIs, place and receive phone calls, and navigate menus using voice commands. The unit includes a push-to-talk wireless remote that clips onto the steering wheel and is used to set the GPS into "listen" mode, and ready to accept a voice command.

I tried out the voice recognition and it worked fairly well, accepting even complex number combinations and street names. I did occasionally have to repeat myself, but the testing conditions were less than optimal to say the least.

Notice that the nuvi 880 has front-firing stereo speakers located on either side of the 4.3-inch LCD screen -- a nice improvement over previous models that use a single, rear mounted speaker.

In addition to real-time traffic, bluetooth, MSN Direct, FM transmitter, mp3 player and photo viewer, the nuvi 880 supports a wireless "send to GPS" function that allows users to wirelessly send POIs or addresses to the device. Unfortunately you'll have to use the Windows Live service to send information to the GPS, but that makes sense given the MSN Direct integration.

The 880 will ship preloaded with maps of North America, 6 million POIs, supports multi-destination routing with route optimization (sorting by distance), and has a trip log that provides an electronic bread crumb trail of up to 10,000 points.

The basic form factor of the nuvi 880 is very similar to previous nuvi models.

Garmin nuvi 880, Windshield mount

Nuvi 880 appears to use an identical docking cradle as the nuvi 700-series, leveraging the same innovative ball and socket style joint and powered mount. Like previous models, the nuvi 880's MSN Direct receiver is integrated into the 12v power adapter.

Garmin nuvi 850

Garmin's nuvi 850 is almost identical to the 880 model, but doesn't have bluetooth or MSN Direct.

Garmin nuvi 5000

Targeted at the growing baby boomer market, Garmin's nuvi 5000 features a large 5.2-inch touchscreen display. Apart from the normal array of nuvi features, the 5000 supports multi-destination routing, and sophisticated route planning that allows drivers to exclude specific roads from the planned route.

The 5000's POI database can also be extended with custom POIs, such as school zones and safety cameras.

MSN Direct is available as an optional add-on, as is FM TMC traffic (the unit will support either). RV and large vehicle owners will be happy to learn that the nuvi 5000 has a video input port that will accepts a video signal from any external analog video source, such as a back-up camera.

Like other high-end nuvis, the 5000 also has a built-in FM transmitter for broadcasting audio via your vehicle's stereo system.

The nuvi 5000 is expected to ship in February and has a suggested retail price of $799.

The nuvi 5000 has an SD memory card slot that can be used for storing additional maps, mp3's, and photos.

Garmin nuvi 780

Garmin's nuvi 780 is identical to the nuvi 760, but adds MSN Direct services. MSN Direct provides real-time traffic data, fuel prices, weather, movie listings, local events, news, stocks, and send to GPS capability.

Garmin nuvi 260W

The nuvi 260W is Garmin's most affordable widescreen GPS with text-to-speech (the GPS announces actual street names).

Garmin Colorado

Garmin also showed off their newest handheld unit, the Colorado 400. I reviewed the 400t earlier this month - be sure to check out the full Colorado 400t In-Depth Review.

Available in four different versions, the Colorado 400t gives hikers state-of-the-art 3D elevation perspective and preloaded U.S. topographic maps. The Colorado 400i offers anglers shoreline details, depth contours and boat ramps for U.S. inland lakes and navigable rivers. The Colorado 400c is your coastal companion, providing chart coverage for the coastal U.S. and Bahamas. The Colorado 300 features a worldwide basemap with shaded relief.

The Colorado 300 retails for $499 and all the 400 models retail for $599.

Garmin Forerunner 405

The Forerunner 405 is Garmin's newest fitness watch. Sporting an updated, smaller and thinner design, the Forerunner 405 lets runners track their speed, distance, heart rate and location. The touch-sensitive bezel lets users control the watch by holding or running a finger along the bezel.

Virtual Partner technology lets Forerunner owners train against virtual partners, and workout intensity can be adjusted in mid-workout without having to exit and start over.

The 405 is water-resistant (IPX7) and can be used outdoors and indoors, supports an optional footpod, optional speed and cadence bike sensor, and can wirelessly transmit data to and from a PC. The watch weighs 60 grams and comes in black or sage green. The Forerunner retails for $299.

Garmin Mobile PC

Garmin also announced the availability of Garmin PC, a $99 hardware/software bundle that turns any PC or laptop into a full featured GPS navigation device. The software essentially makes your laptop look like a Garmin nuvi, and has the same Garmin familiar interface.

Mobile PC supports advanced route planning, allowing users to exclude specific roads from the planned route. The software also supports track logs, breadcrumb trails, automatic re-routing, and provides free access to Garmin Online services for realtime weather, flight status, hotel rates, fuel prices, and safety camera data (Europe only, with subscription).

A software only version is available for $59, and the GPS antenna / software bundle retails for $99.99.

Garmin's pink nuvi 200

Garmin also had it's pink nuvi 200 on display.

Garmin zumo

Garmin also showed off a new design for some of their Zumo motorcycle GPS models.
