iFi Systems' Child Tether is a button-sized device that helps keep children, pets, and pretty much anything else that moves from getting lost in public places. It doesn't use GPS, instead relying on RF to sound an alert if the device wanders too far away from the receiver, and uses beeping tones to point the owner/parent toward the missing child or pet.

OK, so it's not GPS. That sucks. But it's still better than nothing (and actually, for limited indoor use, such as in a mall or supermarket, GPS might not be the best option anyway). We're always on the lookout for the ultimate child/pet tracking device, and for indoor use in public places, the Child Tether could be a good fit for some.
Unlike those embarrassingly unsightly child leashes, the Child Tether is an RF powered device that lets you track up to four tags with one handheld. If one of the tags leaves the pre-defined "safety zone" (70 feet), both the handheld and the tag start beeping and flashing loudly. If the tag goes further than 120 feet from the receiver, Child Tether go into "panic" mode and an even louder alarm sounds and lights flash. The person holding the receiver can be guided to the missing tag by pointing the receiver and walking around. The unit will beep faster if you're moving in the right direction, and slower if you're moving further away.

iFi says the tags are appropriate for child and/or pet use, and the tag is tamper-resistant.

The Child Tether works through walls and doors, and it's omni-directional signal can pass through 2 floors. The batteries are rechargeable and last all day.

iFi (short for I Found It) Systems says the Child Tether will retail for $49.99 and include one pager and one tag. More details available via iFi's website.
