The Best & Worst of 2007

The Best and Worst of 2007

There some great GPS products released in 2007, and some stinkers, too. We take a look at the best and worst GPS products of 2007.

THE BEST

  • Garmin's nuvi 760 shows the kind of engineering detail and ease of use that comes from years of product refinement. The nuvi 760 is the best nuvi yet, adding features like multi-destination routing, and a handy "where did I park my car" feature.
  • Magellan's CrossoverGPS was the best multi-purpose GPS of 2007, providing easy-to-use GPS navigation on and off road, on the water, and for hiking.
  • TomTom's MapShare lets TomTom GPS owners make map corrections and POI updates directly on the GPS, and then share those corrections with other TomTom owners.

THE WORST

  • Navigon's 7100 was one of the year's most promising GPS units, but the 7100 is frustratingly sluggish, difficult to use, and will have you pulling your hair out after 5 minutes of use.
  • PocketLOOX - This handheld GPS looks great, but is stunningly slow and it's virtually impossible to see the tiny screen in a car.
  • Novogo S700 is one of the most difficult to use and unreliable GPS units I've ever tested. Someone needs to send these guys to usability school.
  • Traffic - Almost every GPS company now offers some form of traffic service, a subscription-based service that promised to intelligently route you around traffic problems. Sounds great, but the reality is that real-time traffic data is rarely "real-time", coverage areas are limited to a select few cities, and it's pretty unlikely that your GPS will route you around a traffic jam.
  • Bladerunner GPS-enabled Jackets sounded like a good idea...well, actually, no it didn't...
  • GPS Sneakers - sure, I'd like to track my loved ones via GPS embedded in their shoes, but who would want to buy these sneakers?
