Dash Navigation has finally opened up the doors for pre-orders of its highly anticipated Dash Express.
For those not familiar, the Dash Express is an Internet-connected in-car GPS unit. The feature that has caused a lot of interest is its ability to communication with other units to share information such as traffic conditions. The Dash Express uploads data from one unit to the Dash Driver Network and other units can use that information. In turn, this information can be used to recognizing upcoming traffic jams and provide up to three different routes around the jam.
Another feature that should garner some attention is the ability to send addresses to the unit from any internet browser. Imagine being able to prep your unit without the hassle of using the onboard keypad.
Dash has also made a deal with Yahoo! that lets drivers enter search requests to find local businesses and services into the Dash Express unit.
The device plans to hit the streets around the end of February 2008. You can pre-order the device now for $599. To use the Dash's service plan, it will cost you another $12.99 a month or $10.99 a month for a year's worth of service, or $9.99 a month for two years' service.
My only worry is that it will take a quite a number of Dash Express equipped vehicles for the Dash Driver Network to be truly effective.
