Back when I was growing up in Gotham city, it was common knowledge that anything left behind in a New York City taxi was gone for good. Not so anymore, thanks to GPS technology.
It seems professional musician Nik Munson left his acoustic bass guitar in the trunk of a cab. Not long after he realized his mistake, he remembered that this particular taxi was equipped with the much-protested Taxi GPS technology, which, among other things, provides real-time tracking information.
According to an ABC Eyewitness News report, Munson called the Taxi and Limo Commission, gave them the address he was at when he got in the taxi, and the TLC was able to track down the cabbie in question via the GPS system NY Taxis use, Verifone Transportation Systems. They sent the cab driver a text message, and musician and guitar were re-united soon thereafter.
Given all the bellyaching the Taxi Driver's Union has been doing lately, it's nice to see a positive story about the Taxi GPS system currently being deployed in NYC.
By the way, if YOU ever leave something in a NY cab, tracking it down via the TLC using GPS isn't the fastest/smartest way to get it back. According to TLC Commissioner Matthew Daus, you're much better off dialing 311, as they're already setup to handle such requests.
