Garmin Mobile XT Brings GPS to SmartPhones With No Monthly Fees. Even Works Out of Cell Range.

Garmin Mobile XT

Garmin announced Garmin Mobile XT, a new mapping solution for Smartphone’s with built in GPS that transforms compatible smartphones into turn-by-turn navigation devices. Garmin Mobile XT is a preloaded Micro-SD card with built in maps, Points of Interest (POIs), and access to Garmin's Online services with no monthly fees.

Unlike other cell-phone based GPS software, because Garmin's maps are stored on the SD memory card, GPS navigation continues to work even in areas without cell-phone coverage.

Once the card is inserted, the application connects to your phone's internal GPS, and display's Garmin’s famous “Where to?", and “Show Map” buttons.  Overall the experience is very nuvi-esque. Since the maps are preloaded from the card, there is no wait time like with other mobile navigation solutions that must download mapping data over the air.

Premium services like traffic, fuel prices, hotel rates (now that’s something new…), and weather,  are also free via Garmin Online, and are downloaded using your phone's data connection.  With Garmin Mobile XT's PeerPoint , you can get your friends location via text message, and then see it on the map. Garmin says “PeerPoints is the perfect feature to keep track of friends and family at an amusement park, lake or other outdoor group activity”.

Garmin says the Mobile XT will be shipping in 3-5 weeks and will sell for $99. Not too shabby!
