Dash Express Not Thief-Friendly

Image would go here.

A post on Dash Navigation's blog has some interesting news: steal a Dash GPS device, and you’ll be stealing a paperweight. According to the post, Dash will leverage the devices 2-way communication capabilities and over-the-air software updating mechanism to lock up a device that has been reported stolen (and presumably also get the location of the missing device).

It'll work like this:

Step 1: You park your car in a bad neighborhood with your spanking new GPS idiotically displayed on the dashboard, ignoring the repeated advice of this blog and others to remove GPS devices from sight when parking.

Step 2: Not surprisingly, your car gets broken into and the Dash GPS is stolen.

Step 3: You call Dash Navigation's hotline, and let them know your device has been stolen.

Step 4: Dash sends the magic code to your device, forcing the unit to display the following message: “This device has been disabled. If you feel this is an error call 1-800-XXX-XXXX”

The post also says that one of their road testers actually had theirs stolen, and they used this feature and it worked perfectly. How do they know it worked? Apparently, the thief actually called the number to have it re-activated. After supplying his name and address, the thief was promptly arrested.

Man! - The Dash express is looking better every day, isn’t it?
