Garmin Announces nuvi 200W & nuvi 250W. Completes Wide-Screen Circle of Life.

Garmin nuvi 250W

Why should the high-end nuvi 600-series have all the wide-screen fun? Garmin has updated their entry-level nuvi 200 series and busted out the nuvi 200W and the nuvi 250W, upgrading the display to a 4.3" wide display with improved resolution.

The new nuvis will have a higher screen resolution (480x272 vs. 320x240 on the non wide-screen nuvi 200's) and an upgraded WQVGA LCD display (the same display used on the more expensive 600-series nuvis). Other than the improved display, the 200W and 250W are identical to their non wide-screen counterparts. We were hoping the new 200's would get some text-to-speech love, but alas it was not to be. Still, I'm a member of the "wider-is-better" camp, so the nuvi 250W is good news. Expect to pay about $100 more for the wide screen. The 250W retails for $589, and the 200W for $428.

The nuvi 200-series aren't the cheapest GPS options around, but they do offer rock solid navigation in an easy-to-use package. The lack of TTS is a downer, but I suppose Garmin has to differentiate the nuvi 300 series somehow...

Garmin says both new units will start shipping in the third quarter of this year. I'll be reviewing the 250W soon, but in the mean time you might want to check out the nuvi 250 in-depth review.
