Topcon's new GR-3 GPS receiver makes your newest in-car GPS look like crap. The GR-3 sports a whopping 36-channel receiver that's accurate down to one millimeter (wow), dual hot-swap batteries, and is built to withstand the harshness of mother nature.
By comparison, SiRF's highly acclaimed StarIII chip is a 20-channel receiver, and most people are still using GPS devices with 12-chanell receivers in them. The handle/battery compartment is designed to keep the center of gravity as low as possible, and the squared design prevents the unit from rolling around. They called it the GR-3 because it's the first receiver to support all three satellite systems: GPS, Glonass, and Galileo. It also boasts Bluetooth, and can optionally support GPRS.
The GR-3 is aimed at the lost-at-sea crowd, but those kinds of specs make me wish I could strap one to my car. Oh, and the GR-3 will set you back a paltry $22,000. Get the full details from Topcon's site.
